    3. My Gates family came from Centre County, PA to Preble County, Ohio. These are a few obits on them they are all descendants of George Gates (1810-1877) who married Louisa Fowler. Martin W. Gates Martin W. Gates, 67, St. Clair Hotel, 325 North Barron St., Eaton, died suddenly Monday morning. He had resided there the past three years. He was a native of Eldorado and a retired Monroe Township farmer. Survivors include two brothers, John S. Gates of Eldorado and Clarence Gates of Germantown; four sisters, Mrs. Elsie Gates and Mrs. Martha Jane Clemens of San Francisco, Calif., Mrs. Blanche Long of Middletown and Mrs. Florence Walden of Parker, Colo., nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mr. Gates will be at 10 am Thursday at the Girten-Schmidt Memorial Home with Rev. Martin, Pastor of the Ware's Chapel United Methodist Church, West Manchester, officiating. Burial will be in Zion Cemetery, north of Eaton on US 127. Friends may call from 8-9 pm Wednesday at the funeral home. Phoebe Gates Phoebe Isabel Gates, 80, died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Grace Swartz, at Sunberry O., near Germantown, last Tuesday night. Until five years ago, Mrs. Gates resided on the Monroe Central Road, near Eldorado. She was the wife of the late, James Elwood Gates, a farmer. Surviving are three sons, Clarence of Dayton; Martin of Dayton; and John of near Eldorado; five daughters, Mrs. Grace Swartz of Sunberry, Elsie Gates of San Francisco, Mrs. Blanche Long of Middletown, Mrs. Florence Walden of Parker, Colo., and Mrs. Martha Jane Clemens of Greeley, Colo.; one sister, Mrs. Raymond Houdeschell, RR2, Lewisburg and six grandchildren. Services were held Saturday at the Kramer Memorial Chapel in Lewisburg. Burial was in Zion Cemetery. James Elwood Gates James Elwood Gates, 72, died at his home on the Central Road, five miles southwest of West Manchester, Monday evening. Survivors include the widow, Isabel; three sons, Clarence of New Paris, Martin and John at home; five daughters, Mrs. Grace Swartz, Germantown, O., Miss Elsie Gates of San Francisco, Calif., Mrs. Blanche Long, of Middletown, Ohio, R.R., Miss Florence Gates and Mrs. Martha Clemens, of Denver, Colo. Three grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 O'clock from Ware's Chapel Church in charge of Rev. William Deaton, assisted by Rev. Garth Shepard. Burial will be made in Zion Cemetery. Clarence "C.O." Gates Clarence "C.O." Gates, 93, of Dayton, died Wednesday, April 23, at Miami Valley Hospital. He was born July 29, 1903 in Preble County, the oldest of eight children. His parents, James Elwood and Isabel (Martin) Gates preceded him in death. Mr. Gates operated a garage in Eaton many years ago and worked for General Motors for many years. He was a member of the Dayton Area Visually Impaired Persons Club. Survivors include his wife, Flonnie; one sister, Martha Jane Lundgren of San Francisco, Calif., one brother, John Gates of Eldorado, two nieces and six nephews. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Grace Gates Swartz, Elsie Gates, Blanche Gates Long and Florence Gates Waldeen; and one brother, Martin Gates. Funeral services were at the convenience of the family. Arrangements were by Barclay Funeral Home, Kettering. Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity. Elsie L. Gates Elsie L. Gates, 83, of San Francisco, Calif., died suddenly Sunday, Aug. 7, at her home. She was a former resident of Eldorado. She was born Oct. 7, 1910 in Eldorado, the daughter of James Elwood and Phoebe Isabelle (Martin) Gates, and had lived in San Francisco most of her life. She was a World War II veteran of the Army Nurse Corps, and retired as a lieutenant colonel. Following her retirement she did private duty nursing. Survivors include three sisters, Martha Jane Lundgren of San Francisco, Calif., Blanche Long of Middletown, and Florence Wallden of Parker Colo.; two brothers, John Gates of Eldorado and Clarence Gates of Dayton; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Martin Gates, and a sister, Grace Schwartz. Funeral services will be at 2 pm Wednesday, Aug. 17, at Girton-Schmidt-Boucher Michael Chapel, West Manchester with the Rev. Kenneth Galdeen officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services on Wednesday. Burial will be in Wares Chapel Cemetery, West Manchester. Mrs. Grace Swartz Mrs. Grace Swartz, 83, 8850 Main St., Germantown, died Friday morning at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton where she had been a patient for the past four weeks. She was a native of Eldorado. Survivors include her husband, Monroe; three brothers, Clarence Gates of Dayton, Martin Gates of Eaton, and John Gates of Eldorado; and four sisters, Miss Elsie L. Gates and Mrs. Martha Clemens both of San Francisco, Calif., Mrs. Blanche Long of Middletown, and Mrs. Florence Walldeen of Parker, Colo., a step granddaughter, nieces and nephews. Services for Mrs. Swartz were held Monday at the John A. Arpp Funeral Home in Germantown with the Rev. M. Earl Chadwick officiating. Burial was in the Germantown Cemetery. Monroe Swartz Monroe Swartz, 83, of 8850 S. Main St., Germantown, died Sunday morning at his residence. He was a retired bailiff under Judge Mills for the Montgomery County Courts System, retiring in 1974 after 31 years. He was a pitcher for the Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis teams, from 1920-1930 and prior to that time, played semi pro ball for the Germantown Baker All Stars. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Middletown and a World War I veteran. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Eva Pitsinger of Camden and Mrs. May Durr of Washington Manor Care Center in Dayton; and one granddaughter. Services will be at 10:30 am Wednesday (today) at the John A. Arpp Funeral Home, Germantown with Pastor Arthur R. Tingley officiating. Burial will be in Germantown Cemetery.
