The books cover several Gates families of West Virginia. Thompson Gates, son of David Gates, was early in Wood county. He was born in 1783 in or near Washington, the family home being in Virginia, and settled in Wood County, near what is now Parkersburg. The names of some of his children were James who has descendants, David who has descendants in Iowa, Thomas D. who has descendants in West Virginia, and Eliza who married Martin Gross. The children of Thomas D. Gates were: Eliza, Alexander P., Anna, Lovell C., Thomas J., Harriet, William D., Almond D., Rosetta, and Charles Amos.
