Broome County, New York, Book 1, page 459A. LDS film #810458 Testator: ELIJAH GATES of Triangle, Broome County, NY, age 69. Date of Will: July 5, 1866 Legatees: Maata Gates, wife; Mary M. Pease, daughter; Albert O. Gates, son. Witnesses: Isaiah J. Dings, Smith Mitchell Probate document dated August 31, 1867 refers to Elijah Gates, deceased. Notes: This is probably the Elijah Gates, son of Israel Gates, who was born April 15, 1797 in West Greenwich, RI or in an adjacent town in Connecticut. Chautauqua County, New York, Book 2, page 87. LDS film #810272 Surrogate’s Court, Ellington, NY, document dated July 27, 1852 mentions WILLIAM W. GATES, deceased who left a will dated April 30, 1852. Executor: Charles B. Green Legatees: Fanny Gates of Ellington, NY, widow; William Henry Gates, son, a minor. Thomas Davis consented to serve as guardian for William Henry Gates. Note: This is William Whitney Gates, born November 29, 1819 in Perry, Wyoming County, NY, son of Ardel & Orrilla (Hall) Gates Chautauqua County, New York, Book 2, page 285. LDS film #810272 Surrogate’s Court, Sinclairville, NY, document dated December 22, 1856 mentions RICHARD W. GATES, deceased, late of Ellington, NY. Executor: Charles B. Green Legatees: Rachel K. (or H.) Gates, widow, resides in Ellington; Edwin Gates, a minor, of Ellington; Edward Gates, son, of Canada West; Edwin Gates, son of Canada West, Erasmus Gates, son, of Canada West. James A. Allen was appointed guardian for Edwin Gates. Note: This is Richard Whitney Gates, born April 30, 1788 in Ridgebury, Ridgefield, CT, son of David and Jerusha Whitney Gates. Clinton County, New York, Book C, page 272. LDS film #863417 Testator: ABRAHAM GATES of Chazy, Clinton County, NY Date of Will: July 31, 1852 Legatees: Jeremiah, son; Sarah M. Jones, daughter; Mary T. Gates, daughter; Abraham, son; Judith Dodge, daughter; Eliphalet M. Gates, son. Mary T. Gates, daughter, named as executrix. Probate document dated October 11, 1853 refers to Abraham Gates, deceased. Note: This is Abraham Gates, born May 4, 1769 in Stow, MA, son of Elisha and Lucy (Chase) Gates. Cortland County, New York, Book I, page 9. LDS film #843888 Testator: JUSTIN GATES of Homer, Cortland County, NY, age 56. Date of Will: June 11, 1867 Legatees: Sally M. Gates, wife; Henry M. Gates, son. Henry M. Gates named as executor and Sally M. Gates named as executrix. Cortland County, NY Surrogate’s Court document dated April 18, 1868 refers to Justin Gates, deceased.
