Gates was born in Senatobia July 28, 1911. In his youth he played professional baseball with the New York Yankees and pitched to Babe Ruth. He was a longtime resident of Jackson.and retired as a salesman for the Pangburn Candy Company. He was a member of the Lions Club and St Lukes United Methodist Church. Survivors are his daughter Linda Gates of Dallas, TX. Gates was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Meleese. Memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, P. O. Box 14301, Cincinnatti, Ohio, 45250. Burrial was in Bethesda Cemetery, Senatobia, MS.
