    3. Gena, and all other GATES List subscribers ... Time for some clarification, I think ... PLEASE NOTE CAREFULLY note that the original post on this subject from bridgetsmith@ameritech.net (below) was NOT sent to the GATES List ... it was sent to the GATES Board (hence the reference to the "Message Board URL") and was then gatewayed to the List. Thus, if you send a reply to the List and the original Board poster is NOT subscribed to the List (which is quite likely!), the original Board poster will not get your reply ... and as it turns out, bridgetsmith@ameritech.net is not subscribed to the GATES List. To respond, you must click on the "Message Board URL" and respond there, although also sending your response to the List for the benefit of List subscribers is also strongly encouraged! Pls post me privately if there are any questions on this process! Thanks, and good hunting, Peter Wyant GATES List Admin. Regena Lally wrote: > J.W. Gates was my gr gr uncle. 3. J.W. Gates was my gr gr uncle. His name was John Wesley Gates. He was a civil war vet, confederacy side. Security was usually a family member or friend of the groom. I do not think I have encountered Hager in the family line yet. Emily Gates does not ring a bell with me either...but perhaps this is a connection I did not know about. My gr gr grandfather was Simpson Franklin Gates, also known as S.F. or mostly Frank. He was brother to John Wesley. Do you have a clue where Emily originated from? The Gates brothers came to Randolph Co, bringing their families either during the war or just after. Prior to Randolph Co they had lived in Lawrence Co MO. They owned land there and had migrated from NC and PA. Let me know if I can help you further. You might go to the Lawrence Co MO USGENWEB page and see if there is any record of marriages, births etc. You can also requests look ups at the county site if there is a book that might be pertinent to your research. Perhaps I should have been a bit more specific. The Amos Gates I am trying to trace was in New Brunswick, Canada. The only information I have at this time is that Amos Gates married Margaret Larlee (or possibly it was spelled Lally). I do know that there were Gates who moved from the lower colonies to Nova Scotia after the French Indian War when the area was opened up to settlers.
