Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.families.aol.com/mbexec/msg/an/BOY.2ACIB/123.133.156.1.1 Message Board Post: Barbara, I don't know about the dates or even if the same Gates. I do know that the family served in the Civil War. I believe it was on the Union side. However, in my family I know family members served on both sides and I am not sure if the Gates or Thomas family was part of all the information I know. I heard one story that two brothers serving on the Union side, shot their General in the back because they did not like his orders. Not an uncommon thing, but strange when you find out that it is someone related to you. I am sorry I cannot be more helpful. Also, I believe one of the families lost the father and sons in the Civil War. I wish I could help you out more. Have you tried the National Archives? I know that they have lots of pictures and information. I believe they had lists of soldiers names. Hope you find what you are looking for. Thanks. Tenly

Davis is west of Sacramento in Solano County. The University of California, Davis (UCD) is the mainstay of the town, so I suspect Maria's parents were associated with agri-business since there was little else in that area in the mid-1800's. Putah Creek runs through the university campus.

This particular story appeared in the "Sacramento News" section, but it does state that she was the daughter of a resident of "Davisville," which I cannot locate in the town/county finder, but which I will assume to be in California. This was scanned from an original issue of the Daily Oregon Herald dated August 10, 1871, and you can see it online here: http://theoldentimes.com/mariagates71ca.html I hope it's helpful! (Though you are exactly Bob's age-- because your Dad was so much younger than Gilbert-) I knew the Bible was with your family, and although I have spoken more than once to your dad, who was very sweet, he was pretty adamant that he was focused more on Heavenly Rewards and not wanting to discuss the past history much. Still, he shared one or two stories and was very nice. I do have copies of some of those Bible pages, which Loretta got from Virgil many years ago.

    1. [GATES] Michael/Mikel Gates b. KY 1811 ? where after civil war?
    2. Regena Lally
    3. My gr3rd grandfather was Michael/Mikel Gates, born 1811 in KY. He married Catherine Ann Cline in Sumner Co TN in 1830. By 1840 they were living in IN (perhaps Vandeburgh Co) where son Simpson Franklin was born. By 1850 the family is in Wayne Co IL By 1860 the family is on the census in Mt Pleasant, Lawrence Co MO. When the civil war broke out, Michaels sons, nephews, cousins, etc all joined the 6th MO Cavalry Co H. Under the service of Maj. Coffee. I believe that Michael also fought in the war. It is quite possible that Michael is the "Old Patriarch, Mr Gates" referred to in the book "Shelby and His Men". The rest of the family with the exception of a few resided in Randolph Co AR until recently. Michael and Catherine seem to disappear, I can not locate them after 1860. There are no death records, no land records , no headstones, no probate records, etc (they had owned land in Lawrence Co MO). Sons, nephews, etc have been found in Randolph Co AR. But what has happened to Michael and Catherine? Could they have gone to Texas, back to IL....? If anyone has a clue I would love to hear from you. Thank you. Gena Gates Lally

    3. Gena, pretty close ... all Board subscribers (including the original poster) would be able to read your Board reply (IF you replied through the Board URL) and then the List would receive your reply as well, gatewayed from the Board (because on the GATES List, the Board/List gateway is currently open). Of course, if you replied to the original poster directly (i.e., NOT through the Board URL), then there would be no post to be gatewayed to the List so list subscribers wouldn't get your reply, hence the need, in such a case, to also post to the List (I could have been a bit clearer on this point earlier!) Trust this helps ... PSW Regena Lally wrote: > Peter, > > So she posted too the board only, and then that message was gatewayed to the > list?
