Her name was Mattie A. GATES. She was born about 1847 in Georgia. She died on 25 JUL 1919 in Mobile County, Alabama. Her husband was James A. (Angus) McKAY, they married about 1871, he was b. 13 MAR 1846 in Georgia and d. 16 AUG 1928 in Mobile County, Alabama. They can be found in Clarke County, Alabama on the 1880 census and in Mobile County, Alabama on the 1910 census. But I haven't been able to find on the 1900 census. Mattie was mother to 8 children but only 4 are known and only 5 were still living when the 1910 census was taken. The known children were: Lula McKAY b. abt. 1872 in Georgia, George McKAY b. abt. 1874 in Georgia, John McKAY b. abt. 1876 in Alabama and James Robert McKAY b. 8 AUG 1888 in Alabama, d. 17 OCT 1933 in Mobile County, Alabama. I would be most grateful for any information on Mattie A. (GATES) McKAY.

In the 1860 Lawrence Co MO census I find Ellen as head of household, no mention of husband. She is 29 y.o.born in TN. With her is John W. Grubb, 6 y.o. son born in MO. Son James Grubb age 3 y.o. born MO, and son Franklin 9 months old also born MO. Also in her household is Nancy Gates, I believe her to be sister of Ellen Gates Grubb. Nancy is 22 y.o. born in IN. There is an indication however that she is not a permanet member of the household. Perhaps helping out after the death of Mr Grubb? There is a record of the marriage of Ellen to Mr Grubb, but at the moment it is not at my fingertips. Ellen has a brother named John Wesley who lives nearby, and believe her husband was John. She also had a brother named Simpson Franklin Gates. Fairly strong naming pattern here. If any sounds familiar please contact me/
Hoping to locate someone who may have knowledge of a marriage on 25 July 1854 between a Nollin Gates and Ellender Gates. Marriage took place (if I understand correctly) in a part of Barry Co MO that later became Lawrence Co. Performed by Erasmus Gaw, M.G. Would like to learn more of this couple. Where were they from originally, ages, were they both Gates or was perhaps Ellender a widow, formerly married to a Gates? Children? Is Ellender one of several aunts in my line called Ellen? Participation is open to all males with the Gates surname. The original participants in the study are thought to be descendents of John Gates residing in Simpson/Rankin County, MS in the early 1800s. They are seeking to correctly identify his sons, and then identify his lineage. All Gates are welcome to participate, including other groups attempting to answer similar questions in other parts of the country/world. The Simpson County, MS courthouse burned to the ground, taking with it all records of our early Gates family. Hopefully, this Y-DNA study will help us get over this brick wall constructed from courthouse ashes!
In August of 1836, a man named Peter Gates (b. May 10, 1801) married Elizabeth Surber in Shelby County, Indiana. There is good reason to believe that Peter was from a German or Swiss family who spelled the name GOETZ. There was a Peter GOETZ who was a Justice of the Peace in Shelby County about that time, but I have not been able to learn if it was Peter. Later, the spelling GETTS seems to have been used at times by their children and census takers. It is thought that in later years the spelling GATES was used. Elizabeth was my g.grandfather's sister. Elizabeth was deaf, as well as their two sons who were *possibly* named James and Joseph or Peter, Jr. A daughter named either Jane or Jessie was hearing and attended school in Indiana. According to school records of their cousins, the two boys were supposedly killed "during the Civil War" but probably not as combatants, and their deaths may not have been war related. I have no record of any kind for Peter, Elizabeth, or daughter Jane/Jessie after the 1850 census when Elizabeth and Jane were in Indianapolis. Peter and the boys were not with them. If there were other children I have no information about them. Any ideas for me on this one? Jeanne Surber
