I do know that in 1850 census he is married to Minerva Lillard living in Murray Co. with children: James 11; Rebecca 9; Benjamin 5; Emiline 2. He was born in Ga. Minerva NC. I do not have any info on Elizabeth Bellow after the divorce and have not see any data on any children by her. I feel certain he is a son of Benjamin Gates and Jane Vernon, but do not have data to prove except the repeating of similar family names such as James, Rebecca, and Benjamin.

You gave information on Mable Gates siblings and parents...it is quite coincidental that my Horace Eli Bates' mother was Eunice Miller. It's odd that your Mable Gates mother was Eunice Miller. Seems like we must have a tie here. It is too coincidental about the name.

Debbie: I am not researching the Martin Winslow Gates lineage but I am a direct descendant of Stephen Gates and Ann Veare back 11 Generations. As to others? Some did not live to make it to Michigan. Joseph came when he was five. The last child was born in Barre. Her name was Sarah E. Henry John was older brother by just a few years of Joseph..and he was born in Shelby Basin also. In Henry John's write up in Muskegon, Michigan papers [successful businessman there it seems] he stated his antecedents were 1/4 Irish. Now that could be CUMMINGS or GATES lines. Esther As stated before Mary GATES is a brick wall and has been since late 90s. As well as David CUMMINGS her husband born in 1798. It is possible his father might have been either Joseph or perhaps Jacob. Jacob was son by his first wife who passed on after I think it was her 4th child.
