If so, there seems a good chance she was related to a Sabra Gates. My research indicates that Irvilla likely descends from the Gates lines that were in East Haddam. CT There were groups of Gates families that migrated to Ontario County, NY and then to Michigan. These in Michigan were in Macomb County, Oakland County and several sourrounding counties. Thanks for your reply! My Valentine was born in NC, and I believe he was born about 1808. His family (If J.P.) is his father and I am all but certain he was) left NC shortly after that. Brothers Michael and Valentine married in Sumner Co TN in the spring and summer of 1830. Michael married Catherine Ann Cline (called Caty Ann) and Valentine married Anna May. I was never able to find any trace of Valentine following the families migration route of NC>TN>KY>IN>IL>MO>AR. Since there is Valentine Gates living in Sumner Co TN during this time, I feel pretty certain it is the same one. I have ordered records from the TN Archives to see what I can learn about him. I do know from census records that he was born NC. He appears to have died between the 1880 and 1900 census. My Gates line was indeed in IL during the 1850 census, they were living in Wayne Co IL. Both J.P. and Michael are enumerated along with their respective families. At that time there is a Valentine in the household with J.P. There is also an 18 y.o. Polly Gates listed. I believe that Valentine was Polly's father and that they were visiting his family. By 1860 the 2 families are in Lawrence Co MO...with no sign of Valentine. Thanks for your info, it worth my following up. Gena ----- Original Message ----- From: Phantaz500@aol.com To: jrl91@worldnet.att.net Sent: Saturday, March 06, 2004 3:24 PM Subject: Re: [GATES] J.P. Gates Hello, There were several Valentine Gates. Some were named John Valentine but went by Valentine. One was born in AL abt 1820 -30. There was an older one in maybe NC or SC, I can't remember. Again, I think I remember an Abner Valentine Gates that may have gone by Valentine. This one may have been from PA , IL or OH. Remembering this info is hard since it was over 25 years ago that I ran into this name in the Gates line while trying to find a John Gates. I never connected to a Valentine. There was a Valentine in TN at one point and I recall him being from the Charles Gates line of VA. I only really keyed on one, who was in Washington County, MS on the MS River. He is supposed to have owned two lots in the town of Greenville. More strange is my John Gates, his wife and oldest son sold land there and I have not ever found how they got title to it. The Valentine that was there was ill and crossed the river into Arkansas and may have stayed with friends and/or relatives. No, I never found any one he may have been related to. This was supposed to have been in Chicot County, AR. The rest of the story is he had two or three young children with him and sent them by wagon train to be with a family in IL. The children were supposed to have been shown in a HH on the 1850 census but not a Gates HH. I have long since forgotten the county in IL names. May have been a boy and a girl. This Valentine went on to Texas and died in Natchitoches. Lamar
I am looking for anyone who may have information on a J.P. Gates, born in PA on or about 1781. I believe this man to be my great, great, great, great grandfather but I am unable to make a firm connection between J.P. and the man I believe to be his son, Michael born KY 1811. I have a direct link to Michael. J.P. had another son named Valentine Gates who I believe settled in Sumner Co TN in 1830. Any info appreciated, thank you. Gena Gates Lally

Lived in Canada from 1834 to at least 1870. He married a PHOEBE Unknown, born Apr 24, 1840. She and her parents were born in Canada. May have married in Canada. By 1880 he is living in Essex township, Kankakee County, Illinois with his wife and a JOHN PALMER, age 16, listed as servent. John is listed as born in Canada and both parents born in Canada. JOHN, age 7, born Canada, is listed with the AARON PALMER family in the Essex township, Kankakee County Illinois 1870 census. No relationship given. This could be the same JOHN that is listed with IRA. IRA may have had a grandson, FLOYD, who was born in 1903 and died in 1904.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/BOY.2ACIB/1432 Message Board Post: I am writing in search of anyone interested in a Gates family who were listed in the 1865 Illinois state census as residents of the town of New Philadelphia, in Hadley Township, Pike County, Illinois. Jos. Gates was listed as the head of a household of 6 persons. I am working with a group of historians and archaeologists from the University of Maryland, the Illinois State Museum, the University of Illinois, and the New Philadelphia Association, to research the social history of this town and its past residents as part of our national heritage. We have recently obtained funding from the National Science Foundation as part of our efforts, and we will be engaged in a multi-year project of historical studies, oral history interviews, and archaeological investigations. If you are interested in this project, and recovering the national memory of this historic town, please contact us. We seek your input, as a member of the community who may have an interest in this effort, to talk with us about the types of questions you would like to have addressed through such research, and your thoughts and preferences on potential ways to honor the heritage of New Philadelphia. The story of New Philadelphia is both compelling and unique. In 1836, Frank McWorter, an African American who was born into slavery and later purchased his own freedom, acquired 42 acres of land in the sparsely populated area of Pike County, situated in the rolling hills bounded by the Illinois and Mississippi rivers. He incorporated a town, subdivided the property, and sold lots. He encouraged other families of African American and European heritage to move to the town and create a racially integrated community in the decades before and after the Civil War. New Philadelphia likely served as a stopping place for the "Underground Railroad" of enslaved African Americans who were fleeing northward from the oppression of southern plantations. The history of New Philadelphia serves as a rare example of an integrated early farming community on the nation's Midwestern frontier. The town's population reached its peak of about 170 people after the Civil War, a size comparable to many! Pike County communities today. However, by the end of the century corporate politics resulted in the death knell for the settlement: regional transportation investors routed a new railroad line to bypass the town. Many of New Philadelphia's residents eventually moved away and, by the early twentieth century, only a few families remained. You can learn more about the history of New Philadelphia, and details concerning upcoming phases of our multi-year research efforts by following the related web page links you will find at: http://www.heritage.umd.edu Thank you very much for your time and consideration, Claire Martin

I am hoping for a lead on my great aunt, Elizabeth J. Gates born Nov 1879 in Randolph Co AR. Parents were Michael C. Gates and Elizabeth Piercy Privett Gates. Elizabeth was also nick named Eliza and/or Liza. She appeared on the 1880 Randolph Co census as an infant. She is also listed on the 1900 Randolph Co census as a young woman living in the home of her father. Her mother died in 1899. After the 1900 census I find no other sign of 'Liza'. No marriage record, no death record, no cemetery record. She is not listed on probate records for her grandfather Simpson Franklin Gates who died in 1911 or her father's probate record in 1912. her maternal family had also lived in Washington Co IL and Oregon Co MO. Her paternal ancestors in Lawrence Co MO. Any information or lead would be most appreciated. Thank you Gena Gates Lally
