Do you know who George's father was? Any chance it was Heinrich Goetz? If so we are related. The name Emerson comes up again in the tree later on which makes me think there may be a connection. My husband is a descendant of John Henry Gates 1850 - 1921 and Elizabeth Sherry. Prior to that it is all pretty foggy to me. See anything that might connect? I think John Henry's father was John Henry too. A son of George Gates. A son of Heinrich Goetz.

    1. Chronological Chart - GATES, ROCK, WILEY, BEST, ENSMINGER families and others
    2. Adina Watkins Dyer
    3. In an attempt to track and sort out the families associated with my Gates family, I have put together a chronological chart from information gathered so far on these families. It is a work in progress and will be added to as more information is found. This chart begins in 1750 and goes to 1901, covering the areas of Greenbrier and Monroe counties in Va., Bourbon Co., Ky., Champaign and Clark counties, Ohio, and Tippecanoe County, IN. I hope others researching these areas and families might find it helpful. If you find a connection here - please let me know! http://home.insightbb.com/~adyer/GatesChron.htm Adina Dyer

I am a descendant of George Gates (1814-1903) who married Elizabeth Gross (1812-1889). They had 7 children Henry Harrison Gates ( also known as Harry) (1852-1914), William K.(1849), Margaret(1854), Anna, Geoge W., James(1843), and Jane. Henry married Carrie Porterfield. William married Arvilla Fetterman. James married Agusta Hillier. Not too sure about the others. I descend from Henry Harrison, who had a son named Lawrence Emerson who married Olive Oretta Shannon. They then had a son Harry Eugene who married Inez Maxine Shreffler who had a son Hugh. Hugh is my father. If you have any information regarding this Gates family I would love to hear from you. I am still rather new to researching family history and could use all the help I can get. Thanks, Tisha Dawson (w.izzy@mailexcite.com)

Surnames: GATES Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/BOY.2ACIB/1437 Message Board Post: I am hitting huge brick walls again. I have several Gates members missing from my family born between 1801 and 1890. Most were born in NY in the first half of the century, but several are born in counties in MI (Kent, Kalamazoo, Barry, Newaygo, Montcalm, Ionia, Muskegon, St Clair, Oscoda, Otsego, Clare and Iosco), they hit Montana, Fayette IN, and Wisconsin as well. Tracking them is becoming increasingly difficult. If you have ties to any of these counties and your family originated in the 1800's in New York, would you please email me if you know the lineage. Please email me if you don't know their lineage as well. I am hoping to connect with someone who may have that missing piece. My hope is to make a list of your lines for my notes so that I quit barking up the wrong trees. (no pun intended) Thanks for your help. I can be reached at nsrunyan@hotmail.com FYI: my line is Oliver Donald Frederick "Pete"- Arthur Charles "Asa"- Adelbert Merrill- Robert Town- Elisha- Joshua- Caleb- Thomas- Stephen- Thomas. 1. [GATES] ADMIN. POST - Virus Warning
    2. Peter S. Wyant
    3. Folks, this will be one of those very rare posts from me advising the list about a virus alert. As many of you are likely aware by now, a new type of worm has appeared over the last 24 hours or so that does NOT require an attachment to be opened in order for the virus to be activated. It's called by various names by different AV providers, many of the names "Beagle" or "Bagel", and there are a number of brand new strains, including -O, -P, -Q, -R, -S, and -T. Most newspapers around the world today will have a news report about this new worm, with more details. This post is NOT meant to alarm anyone, and no-one should be alarmed IF (a) you have regularly updated(!) AV software running, and (b) if running in an Microsoft Windows environment, you regularly download and install the most current MS patches. For further information on this (and all other) virus threats, pls see: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/ For further information on available MS patch downloads, pls see: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp Thanks, and as Phil Esterhaus used to say, "Hey, let's be careful out there!" Peter Wyant List Admin. p.s. any comments to me off-list, please.
