Philip was born in 1781 in York Co PA. Parents were German immigrants, Jost/Yost Goetz and Mary Goetz. Have christening recording linking Philip to his parents. But no conclusive link between Philip and the man I believe to be his son, Michael Gates, born 1811 KY. I descend directly from Michel, son of Philip, that is what I am trying to establish is the father son relationship. Have not tried Heritage Quest. Gena

This Philip was christened in the Christ's Evangelical Luthern Church in York CO. It is believed that his father Yost/Jost Goetz took the family to live in Rowan Co NC when Philip was a young boy. It is believed that Philip had 3 older brothers, John, George and Michael Gates. When Yost/Jost Goetz died in NC in 1798 it is said the sons changed to spelling to Gates. This may have been done out of necessity to make the name easier to use. The brothers soon left NC and traveled with their families into TN > KY > IN > IL and some eventually to MO and on to AR. I seek proof of the connection between Philip and one of his future sons, Michael, born 1811 in KY. I found a David Gates in Galia Ohio married to a Hannah Loucks. On the 1870 in Ohio census they have Sarah born in 1867, son George abt 1863 and Everett born abt 1865. In 1880 Hannah was in Coffey, Kansas married to a Israiel Huffman, Sarah and Everett are with her but not George. It seems that Mr. Huffman died shortly after they married. When Sarah Gates married Sturgeon they lived in the county over from Chautaugua Co Kansas. I can find nothing further on David Gates after 1870. do this ring a bell to anyone? THANKS!

I have an Elihu Gates, which I have not ever found a spick of in any census or whatever, but he married a relative from Michigan, Marguerite MCFATE, who went with him to Texas and died their from childbirth complications the family says. I am searching for information on the man who may be my 5th great grandfather. He was a Prussian immigrant who likely disembarked at Philadelphia. I believe this man to have had a wife named Mary, and four sons named John, George, Michael and Philip. I believe they left York Co PA and settled in Rowan Co. after 1781. Because of the numerous spellings of both the given and surname, I am having difficulty locating records for this family. I believe that Yost/Jost/Joseph died about 1798, at that time the sons chose to change the spelling of the name to GATES. If you can help please contact me I would be most appreciative. Thank you.
