They are probably related. My Gate's came from Onondaga and Oswego Counties and CT before that. It may be possible that we are very distant cousins, but not sure at this point in my searching. Linda

I have recently begun searching for family information on Yost/Jost GOETZ/GATTS/CATTS/GETTS/GATES in and around Rowan Co. Here is what I have so far. Yost/Jost Goetz, born Prussia. Immigrated to US and dis-embarked probably in Philadelphia. He was married to Anna Maria, (Mary) and her surname is believed to be Walpurga. This couple had 4 sons, Michael, George, John and Philip. Philip I am fairly certain was my 4th great grandfather. Philip's christening record was recorded at the Christ's Evangelical Lutheran church in York Co PA. He was born in 1781. It is believed that when Philip was approximately age 4 years, the family left PA and went to the Rowan Co area. Yost/Jost died in Rowan Co about 1798. I am hoping to find any information about this family in NC. To my knowledge all four sons married in the Rowan Co area. I believe 3 of the sons married sisters by the name of Groves. Philip married Elizabeth "Betsy" Bullion in Rowan Co in 1903. After the death of Jost/Yost the 4 sons left Rowan co, settling for a time in the Muhlenburgh Co KY area. Michael, George and John eventually settled in the area of Sangamon Co IL. I believe that George died at a rather young age, leaving small children. Philip seems to have settled for a time in IN. It was somewhere in Indiana that Michael Gates and wife Catherine Ann (Caty Ann) had a son named Simpson Franklin Gates, born 1837. Frank, or S.F. as he was also called, was my 2nd great grandfather. In 1850 the family of Philip and Michael were both recorded during the 1850 Wayne Co IL Federal Census. By 1860 the family (minus Philip) is found in Lawrence Co MO. After the Civil War ended most of the Gates had moved on to Randolph Co AR where some of the family still lives. I would like to find documentation of Yost/Jost and family prior to his death in NC and or PA. I would be most grateful for any information about this family. Thank you. Gena Gates Lally

He married Barbara Amsbaugh and they had at least 6 children: Lydia, Isaac, Martin (I am descended from this Martin), Elizabeth Jane, George and John. Martin died in Medina County, OH on January 10, 1887. I suspect that the Father of this Martin Gates was the Martin Gates living in Fallowfield Township, Washington County, PA from 1800-1820, but do not have enough info to prove or disprove this. If you have any info please let me know.

I can give you a little on the English Gates family which began with a Puritan migration to Massachusetts Bay Colony aboard the ship MASTER. After spending about 175 years in New England, mostly Massachusetts, Timothy Gates and John Gates helped Rufus Putnam and others to set up Ohio for the white man after the Revolution was won. They were in Marietta, the oldest town in Ohio, on the Ohio River and were very influential people there. They even had a court case go all the way to The Supreme Court. These are in my own line. Since your Augustus was born in Ohio, he may be part of my family, too. John's son, Moses, went down the Ohio a little farther south, where he had a family who were postmasters, educators, journalists, and one of them was James Madison Gates, who, in 1861, went up the Kanawha River as a reporter for the Cincinnati Enquirer, married my great-great grandmother and founded the Gates Paint Company in what is now Charleston, Kanawha County, WV, but was then Kanawha Court House, VA. The Gates genealogy is on file with Columbia University in Morningside Height in Manhattan, New York, New York. It is a very well-documented family because of their early immigration, right after the Mayflower, and the good record-keeping of the Church of England and the New England colonies, in general. Each of their spouses have pretty easy genealogies to follow, as well. I'd be happy to help any who are looking for the New England lines of the family. Sharon Lee Gates Apopka, FL

Hoping to learn more about Philip GATES, believed to be the son of Yost/Jost GATES. Philip was born 1781 in York Co PA. Family removed to Rowan Co NC when he was approximately 4 years of age. Philip married Betsy Bullion in Rowan Co in 1803. Philip and Betsy had the following known children, if there were others I have not yet located them. Philip was in Muhlenburg Co KY in 1820. I can not locate him on 1830 or 1840, by 1850 he was living in Wayne Co IL on property adjoining that of son Michael. I do know that between 1820 and 1850 the 2 families lived some where in Indiana. I have been unable to locate what county they were in. Son Michael and his wife Catherine had children born in IN in 1837. That child, among others was my great great grandfather Simpson Franklin Gates. Any clues, suggestion or facts gratefully and graciously accepted. Thank you, please be advised that my e-mail address has changed to jrl91@cox.net Sarah, b. abt 1805, NC Susannah, b. abt 1807, KY Valentine, b. abt 1808, NC Michael, b. 1811, KY Gena Gates Lally
