    2. I wonder if I am “knocking on my brick wall”. Would like to know more about family information on the families below. I found the people (males) on various censuses and suspect they are all related. Could be 2-3 generations in: Vermont-Rutland County, Rutland Village. 1850 URIAL GATES 73yrs b CT LYDIA 67yrs b VT SOPHIA GATES 48yrs b VT JACOB BATES 21yrs b VT SUSAN GATES 18yrs b VT (are Jacob & Susan a couple?) In 1830 Urial is probably 50-60 yrs; Jacob (different from above one) is 70-80; Nehemiah is 70-80. I tried to find these GATES in History of Rutland, online, and have yet to find a bio about any of them. Do you have information on these people? Thank you Susanne Michigan

    1. Re: GAtes marriages in Ohio , Wash Co, Morgan co, Musk co.
    2. Hi, I am descended from the Gateses in Marietta, OH. Since they were pioneers and founders of Marietta, they are well-documented in OH. Timothy Gates was the older-half brother of my ancestor, John Gates, born 11 May 1766, Tolland, CT. His dad, Stephan Gates, grandson of the Puritan immigrant Stephan Gates, was married three times, Timothy was the son of Betty Monroe. Timothy was born 25 Hanuary 1746-7 at Sharon, CT He married 4 December 1777 at Corham, ME to Suzannah Marsters. In 1794, they removed to Waterford Township, Watershing County, OH. Stephan's second wife was Dinah Mead and they had two sons, Lemuel and Samuel who both served in the Revolutionary War. My ancestor, John Gates, was by Stephan's third wife, Elizabeth Butler Cook. John was born 11 May 1766 in Tolland, CT and was thirteen when his father died. In 1781 he was living in Westford, CT, when John Hildredth, husband of his half-sister, Betty, was appointed his guardian. (Betty is Timothy's younger sister, born in 1749, also in Sharon, CT). On 8 December, 1791, John Gates married Mary Haskell of Tynbsboro, MA. By the fall of 1801, he had removed to Ohio, where, at Marietta, his brother-in-law, Moses Haskell, witnessed a promissory note given by John Gates to Rufus Putnam, 30 September, 1801. In 1802, John Gates lived in Waterford, and there is a record in the common please court of a suit brought on a promissory note for merchandise received from Dudgley Woodbridge and Harmon Blennerhassett. Joh Gates carried this suit to the Supreme Court, in 1804, August term. I do not know the disposition, but would love to find out. Besides Mary's brother, Moses Haskell, who was with them in Ohio, there was also John's older half-brother, the aforementioned Timothy Gates, who raised a large family in Marietta. In a thesis on early Marietta architecture there is a statement that "The rear portion of the Hildreth House, built about 1805, for Timothy Gates." Timothy died in 1822, the same year as John and Mary Haskell Gates. I don't know what happened that year in Marietta, but perhaps it was a flu epidemic. I'd like to know what happened in 1822 in Marietta. I do not have the children of Timothy and Suszannah Marsters Gates or for Betty Gates and John Hildredth. It is likely that one of Timothy and Suzannah Marsters Gates was also named Timothy Gates! I have the children of John and Mary Haskell Gates, of course, since one is my ancestor. I will furnish more of this if you are interested. Sharon Lee Gates 1476 Glenmore Drive Apopka, FL 32712-2046 Telephone: 407-814-9644 Telefax : 407-814-9645 Mobile phone: 407-375-9644

The history of this family, as furnished by her nephew, Mr. Martin L. Downer, of Detroit, is of interest. Mr. Gates, with his family, crossed the Missouri River on their way to Utah 4 July, 1852. They made the journey by ox-team, and arrived at Salt Lake City 27 Sept, 1852. A few weeks afterwards they rem to a farm at Lynne, where Ogden City now stands. Mr. Gates remained there several years, laying out and grading the city under Brigham Young's direction. He finally settled in the Great Salt Lake Valley, two miles from the foot of the Watsatch range of mountains. Their house was the first built on that windswept desert. Mr. Martin L. Downer visited Mrs. Gates in 1892. He was the only Downer relative she had seen for forty-six years. He found her happy and contented on her 20-acre farm, which was always green, being irrigated by a nearby mountain stream. She was a Mormon, and a firm believer in their faith, and was much honored and beloved by all who knew her. Her descendants were numerous. A large number died previous to her death, but at the time it occurred therewere living 4 of her children, 33 grand children, 117 greatgrand children and 31 great-great-grand children-- a total of 185. In the Utah building, at the World's Fair, Chicago, were several views of her home, one of which showed her ! sitting under a box alder tree knitting. A copy of the same is given on another page.
