I have just discovered the married name for the above great great grand aunt. She was the daughter of Michael Gates and Catherine Ann Cline Gates. Nancy was born in IN in 1839. She married Joseph A. Maxwell in St Clair Co MO on Feb 12, 1857. Joseph was a farmer, and they are found in the 1860 St Clair Federal Census. They have two children, Martha age 2 years and William A. age 6/12. In 1870 Nancy is found in the household of Joseph Maxwell, age 70 in Howard Co MO. Nancy is age 39 and has Martha age 13 years, William A. age 10 years, Louisa, age 9 years and Jonathan age 5 years. Joseph has either died or left the family for some reason. I can not locate him on any other census. By the 1880 census I can no longer find Nancy, Martha, Louisa or Jonathan. William A. however, is age 20, mother born IN and married. Wife is Lottie and they have one child, Clara age 11/12. It is possible, as has happened before that Nancy may have taken the younger children and removed to Randolph Co AR where there are other relatives....just covering all the bases...and hoping for more information. My great grandfather was Michel C. Gates, b. March 1859 in Lawrence Co MO...that is the far sw corner of MO. The family removed to AR after the civil war....BUT Mike C had a grandfather also named Michael. I have never found a middle initial for him tho. Michel/Mikel was born 1811 in KY. He married a Catherine Ann Cline in Sumner Co TN in 1830. They gradually moved west to MO. During the war most of the Gates men fought for the Confederacy and by wars end had left Lawrence Co. I have a hunch some went to KS or perhaps TX....In any event Michael and Catherine just completely disapear before 1870. Not to be found anywhere so far. No records or evidence of death. Might there be a connection?

Valentine Gates b. abt 1790 married Mary Jane Elliot in Monroe or Belmont County OH. Valentine's parents were George Gates and Sevilla. Supposedly, George's father was Johann Andreas Gates/Goetz/Kitts. I would like to have a full listing of Valentine's children. He came over the Oregon Trail in 1847 and married CYNTHIA YORK in 1847, settled in Milwaukie, Multnomah Co.,Oregon where they raised 7 children, WILLIAM, LAURA, LAFAYETTE, DON CARLOS,SARAH, EMMA and MARY ELLEN. ALONZO GATES (brother of Thomas) born in 1827 New York came over the Oregon Trail in 1848 and settled in Milwaukie, Oregon, where he and his wife, Ellen lived and raised their family. Ypsilanti Gates was born 7/3/1830 in Chautauqua Co., NY, and is found in the 1850 census in Mercer Co., IL, living with the family of Seth Gates (most likely her brother) and his wife Lydia. She married William Sutton 3/10/1858 in Mercer Co., IL, and died 12/9/1893, buried in Mercer County. The 1880 census indicates her parents were born in Massachusetts. Her name has appeared various ways in the census, such as Epsalina, Essaline, Epysalurto. Research did not turn up parents for Seth Gates, either. Born 11/2/1825 in New York, died 1877 in Illinois, married Lydia Beal Andrews 4/3/1845 in Warren Co., IL. I would like to know who her parents were. She has been said to be the daughter of Benjamin Gates (b. 1774 in CT or VT) and an unknown second wife (not Lydia Butler). It's certainly a possibility as Benjamin Gates died in nearby Hancock County, Illinois, perhaps about 1842, as well as his son Benjamin Butler Gates before the 1850 census. Hi, I am interested in obtaining additional documentation concerning my great great grandfather, Moses Fish Gates and his second wife and first cousin, Eunice Gore <born in Ohio in 1829/33>, who were married in Kirtland, OH on Oct. 24, 1852 and then settled on a farm in Iowa. Pointers to information that would settle Eunice's exact birthday would be most appreciated, as would the census page reference for Eunice in 1850. Moses was the son of Tarbel Gates, of Halifax, Vt. and Desire Gore, of Windham, Vt .(born 1785), who married in 1808. Moses was born in Vermont in 1819; his family settled in Kirtland, OH in 1828, and then moved to Munson in 1834.
