    3. Hi Jeanne, I think we have e-mailed before? I descend from Philip Gates (one generation from the Goetz spelling). My Philip was born in PA 1871 per his christening record. It is possible that my Philip and Elizabeth Bullon, b. 1784 in NC had other children. But it does not seems the dates for you Gates are the correct ones for Peter to be connected with Philip. Philip married in Rowan Co NC 1803 and within a few years the family with Philip's 3 brothers, George, John and Michael, began to move westward. They were found in KY > TN > IN > IL > MO > finally AR. So far I only suspect they were in Vadeburgh Co IN. The naming pattern in this family was very strong and it is possible that one of the brothers named a child for Philip but so far I have not found one if they did. Do you think there may be any connection? 3. In response to the roll call, I'm searching for my g.grandfather's sisters's possible descendants. On August 01, 1836, Peter GATES married Elizabeth SURBER in Shelby County, Indiana. (Elizabeth was deaf but Peter was not.) The name GATES in this case was almost certainly a German name that had been anglicized from Goetz, or Getz. Elizabeth used the name "Getts" as did her children for some years. Another researcher wrote to me: " . . . I think Peter Gates may be the son of Phillip Gotz (with the double dots over the o) and his wife, Christina, b. May 10, 1801, Shenandoah County, VA. (Zion Pine Church Records) . . . . I have also seen the name spelled GETZ and GEATTS." They had two boys b. ca 1838 - 1840 who may or may not have been deaf and who were said to have died "during the civil war" although they have not been listed as combatants. There was also a daughter who was named "Jane" or "Jessie," and who was born ca 1838. Census records have been of little help. Was this the Peter Goetz who was a Justice of the Peace in Shelby County Indiana? I have almost no information on this family and since the ancestors of either Peter or Elizabeth are unproven at this point, I'd much appreciate any clues. Jeanne Surber [email protected]

    3. I have been searching for information on a great great aunt born Mary Gates, about 1842, IL or MO, to Michael and Catherine Gates. I have discovered tonight a record on the FamilySearch Web site, a record for a Mary Susan Gates, born 26 March 1850 in IL, Mary died 22 Nov 1886 in Ritchie, MO. Husband was Robert Taylor Harris, born 25 Dec 1848 in AR. , Robert died 4 Aug 1928 at Hoxie, Lawrence Co AR. Mary and Robert were married on 9 Feb 1873 in Newtonia, Newton Co MO. They had the following children per the 1880 censuschild, Mary Elizabeth Harris, born 26 May 1878 in Pocahontas, Randolph CO AR. Becky/Rebecca (?), age 6, b. MO Thomas, age 4, b. MO Mary E., age 2, b. MO, She died 2 June, 1960 at Wichita, Sedgewick KS James, age 10/12, b. MO Perhaps this is a coincidence, I lack a definite date of birth on Mary, daughter of Michael and Catherine Gates, though I did know that she was born in either IL or MO. I have found other members of the Gates family in Newton CO MO. Also a number of Gates family members left MO during or after the war (Civil War) and settled in Randolph CO and Lawrence CO AR. Is there anyone on the list with knowledge of the above family? If so I would like to establish contact with you. Gena Gates Lally

    2. Roll call? I'm still here just like I have been for the past 36 years . . . . . . . looking for the parents and location of a John Gates b. ca 1780 NC? who married a Rebecca b. GA 1785 per 1850 census. (No maiden name found for her) First? child b. GA 1809 - John Bedford Gates, m. Mary Ann Everett in MS. She too appears to have been from GA. Don't know county name for either. DNA testing reveals John being connected to a William Gates who came through TN from VA or NC to MS about 1826-27. There is still some disagreement as to William being descended from Charles Gates of VA or from another line out of SC. Any ideas and/or suggestions are welcome. [email protected] [email protected]

    3. I am still trying to locate Margaret Gates' parents. From her daughter's death certificate - Margaret was born in 1813 in PA (no county given). About 1833, she married Mathew McCoy (b.1810 PA) (parents?), had sons George and Robert in PA and moved to Licking Co. Ohio 1836/7. Had one son Martin and seven girls there and died in childbirth in 1852 (age 39) If any of this connects my family to yours or if you have any suggestions for me to find my Gates or McCoys, I'd love to hear from you. Alta and Frank's marriage cert. Says her father was John Gates in Big Rapids, Mecosta Co., MI Alta's death cert. Says her father was George Yates. Much of the other information I have indicates her maiden name may have been "Hanson". ******** Chuck, I would strongly take the information on the marriage certificate because SHE probably gave the information. The death cert information came from 'someone else'. The name GATES could have been remembered by that person as Yates. They sound the same. My guess is the informant on the death cert never knew the father. Regarding information of Hanson, could she have been married prior, and that is a married name. 1900 Census: Francis Townsend--Ionia Co--Sebena Twp, June 20, 1900 Ed 31 p 8B FLORA A--b Nov 1865 MI Children: Vera M, John S, Florence Perhaps Alta was middle name. 1880 Census John & Mahuly Gates----Bay Co MI Flora--14yr b MI Olive-- 2yr b MI Have you worked with the Census records?
