Proving Native American Indian ancestry for an ancestor involves: 1) their appearance on an Indian Census, or 2) a proven genealogy, or 3) genetic genealogy (DNA) test results for certain descendants The Indians who migrated into the Wiregrass Georgia region (southeast Georgia, including Telfair County) during the first half of the 19th century were most likely originally from the Lumbee Tribe, or they were Independent Indians from southeastern North Carolina (who were not associated with a specific tribe). They would not have been Cherokee. Many, who claimed to be Indian, or avoided a classification other than White, were originally classified as mulatto, or other non-white on a U.S. Census. Robert B.
