It has this account of the shooting. Thursday, Jul 18, 1907 McCranie Killed by Studsill Policeman Tom Studstill shoots and kills John D McCranie at Milan New reached Eastman Saturday of the killing at Milan on Friday of Mr. John D. McCranie by Policeman Tom Studstill. Details of the killing are very meager, and we have been unable up to this time to get a definite account of the matter, two different reports being received here. One report was to the effect that Mr. McCranie who had just been fined by the mayor of Milan for being drunk and disorderly, refused to either pay the fine or be locked up, and then he was shot while actively resisting the officer, it being claimed that the officer was acting in self defense. The other report said that Mr. McCranie had been completely unarmed and that he was shot while running away from the officer. The killing took place in Telfair County. Mr. Studstill and Mr. McCranie were both young men, prominently connected, and the unfortunate affair is greatly deplored by their friends and acquaintances.
