They were one G. off... John S. Register was paid on occasion to guard prisoners, as evidenced by the county account payment books, but it was not him that was a peace officer, it was his father. John S's mother never married. She had 4 sons out of wedlock and she and her much older neighbor were haulled into court at least on 4 occasions for fornication and living in a state of fornication (Shacking up!). Each of the first 3 occasions coincides with the birth of her 3 oldest children. Her fourth son, well... we just don't know his dad yet! This older man was a peace officer and served as bailiff in Laurens Co. for many years, up until about 2 years before he died.
