Someone PLEASE tell me WHAT the rootsweb list are for...PLEASE???????????????????? Am I only supposed to ask questions for help and such? Where can I go to to learn the RULES, before it is too late for me to help anyone. Or you can contact the person who is the Coordinator for the Cemetery Project pages and the Obituaries Project. As I advised you before the list were never set up to be a place to post continous cemetery, obituary or any type of material. That is why we have the county pages and the data bases that we have. If you need the atta girl then post it to the archives and give yourself a big pat on the back as being the contributor. "EVERYTHING." There are much nicer & kinder people on OTHER county list!!! From now on, I would like to be unsubscribed from this list, (Irwin Co.) and hope that no one needs ANYTHING that I so graciously TRY to offer? All I ever try to do, is to help people, and get this rude comment?...NO THANKS, I don't need it! Look for me on other county list, with NICER list managers/moms! Sincerely, Kay Music PS...to the kind person who sent me this CD with all your hard work and years of typing up obits, I say, "I am sorry." PSS...if she lets this go thru to the list, I will really be surprised! -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Re: [GAIRWIN] LASTINGER's in GA/FL Date: Thu, 23 Jan 2003 16:55:44 -0800 (PST) From: Gloria Holback To: Kay Music Kay, please stop posting the obits to the list. I asked you kindly to stop posting the obits to the list about a week or so ago. Now enough is enough. Let me know if I can do any look-ups for anyone, but maybe off list? I am not sure what all counties are in it, as it is huge. I think I am going to start posting the index, after I get all the cemeteries typed up that Sherry and myself did this long weekend. Sincerely, Kay PS..I am also behind in posting my obits......WHEW! ==== GAIRWIN Mailing List ==== Be sure to visit the GAGenWeb Project Archives often for Irwin County to see what new files have been added. http://www.rootsweb.com/usgenweb/ga/irwin.htm ============================== To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Do you Yahoo!? As a list mom myself, I see the point of not posting all of this info to a mailing list. Some people are on many, many lists (I am on about 20 related to genealogy and another 15 or so related to other topics). Also, some people have to pay their internet cost based on the quantity and size of downloads (i.e., mail). Subbing to lists where there are a lot of such posts of lots of "general" info that may or may not ever be relevant to them could start to pose enough of a problem that they have to decide whether they can even afford to belong to that list. I'm sure it could have been said more nicely. But it's also the case that probably the best place for this kind of info is at a site that you reference in a link in your email (much more permanent). Some ideas might be to create a tagline for your email posts (see the Help section of your mail program) that tells people you have the resource and are posting the info therein at site "xyz"; or putting something in there about your willingness to do lookups. In these two ways, you also are making the information available for the long-term, not just to those people who happen to be subbed to the list at the moment you post it. Here's another idea. Go to this site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~bwo/ and get added as a volunteer to do lookups. A lot of people check and use this site (I'm a volunteer there, as well), and you actually have the ability to reach a lot more people. Plus, doing a single lookup for a single name might actually be more manageable than transcribing the book in its entirety. There may also be issues related to copyright--I'm less familiar with this aspect but have come across discussion about the pros and cons of copying info from books and other sources. Anyway, HTH.
