I have personally researched records in the courthouse, which went all the way back to the very early 1800's. If you travel to McRae, Georgia anyone there will be glad to show you where the courthouse is located. Do not be embarrassed to find a record of moonshining, or something else, against an ancestor, especially if it's between 1925-1955. Several officials remained in office for 30 years, or longer, during this time period, including the sheriff. During te depression there weren't many jobs available, there still isn't in the county today. Many people turned to making money any way they could. It was okay, if you were in with this crowd, the sheriff and his deputies would turn and look the other way, but if you said or did something they didn't like--look out! I was born and grew up in the county during this period and I know this is true. My father and mother were related to several in this crowd, so they kept their mouths closed. Robert Jeffries

My Great-Great Grandfather was Aaron Fountain and was killed in the Civil War circa 1864.... My Great-Great-Grandmother was Elizabeth Bottoms - Arron's wife. Elizabeth was said to be of English ancestry, while Aaron was originally of French extraction. They had 5 children - Jim, John, Ruben, Sue and William. We beleive Sue went to Al.. Jim or John went to Texas - and the other initially went to Adairsville,GA and then south???? William went to Cordele, GA and Ruben, aka. Rube - was the youngest and when Aaron was killed in the Civil War - he was placed in a Masonic Orphanage in Gordon County, GA. circa 1864.... [Ruben was my direct line Great Grandfather...] We were unsure why Elizabeth had place Ruben in a home - but it might have been his age... I think he was very young at the time....Ruben died circa 1938 burried in a now unmarked grave outside of Cavesprings, GA.... Arron and Elizabeth live in several locations in eastern AL and in Bartow and Floyd Counties in GA... If we have a match let me know and I would apprecaite any info you might have......
