My husband's line of Goffs came through (If I remember correctly) Bullock county Georgia and went on to Alabama and Mississippi. My father-in-law was stationed in Georgia while a Marine and moved back to Georgia when he got out. It's kinda hard to trace my husband's Goff line out of Mississippi... that common name of William Goff. We think we know which one, just have to find the documentation, which is hard sometimes from long distance. Zaroga Goff

If so, then the cemetary is located on Georgia Highway 117 two miles south of the Dodge/Telfair county line. The cemetary is in a small fenced-in area set pack just a bit from the highway with a sign marking it as Concord Cemetary. Robert H. Jefferies remembers correctly: that was the Temperance community. Across from the church was a school and a Masonic lodge. About half a mile to the south, at the dirt road (the Tram road), was the old "Dodge" company building. Across the highway was the old hotel, and on the other side of the house there was the Colored school. All of this is gone now. There used to be quite a town there; I'm told that about a hundred homes stood in the area along the Tram road from the highway. I was always warned about the abandoned wells in the area - very hazardous. The black church on the Tram road is New Hope CME Church. It originally stood on the highway across the road from the Colored school, but burned and was moved to the Tram road. That cemetary is located in the woods toward Spring Lake. There's a rumor that another white church stood closer to the river, but I don't know if it's true. The Tram Road itself was part of the old Central Georgia Land and Lumber Company (Dodge Company) rail line. They used to send lumber down this railroad to the river, where it was sawn and built into rafts to float down to Darian. Hope this helps. - Kevin J. Cheek

I was born and lived for about the first 12 years of my life in that area. There was one main dirt road called the tram road which ran right through the area. I never knew of a white church on the road, but the last I know of a black church was still holding services in theirs. In the 1800's this was the same area where the Dodge family had a large business cutting trees and sending them down the river to Lumber City. Near this area is a lake called Dodges Old Lake. I may be wrong, but this is the community I have always heard called Temperance Community. Robert Jeffries ([email protected])

I have been told that there were two churches by the same name (one for whites and one for blacks) and that the "white" church was located on a hill somewhere between Jacksonville, GA and Milan, GA. I am desperately seeking an obit for George Washington Adams, who lived in Suomi, (born 1849 in Gwinnett County, Ga.)and is buried in the Chauncey Methodist Cemetery. He died in 1915. I checked with the Cemetery Book, but there is no listing for him in it, It was suggested that I check with the Newspapers in Telfair Co. I live in NY state, and am researching family by 'net. I am seeking if possible the names of his parents. Much thanks. Jane

Maude Estelle Conley was b. Jul. 15, 1905 in Milan, Telfair Co., (which is almost on the Dodge Co. line), and d. Dec. 9, 1982, in Fernandina, Nassau Co., FL. "Supposedly', Maude married a Marvin Hinson/Henson, before their daughter, Lola was born in 32. Lola said her mother, Maude, said that after her and Marvin married, they went to live with his parents. She 'thinks' his father's name may have been John? Hinson. Lola also thinks she remembers her mother Maude saying that his parents were sick, and she took care of them? Anyway, 'supposedly' something happened between Maude and Marvin. Maude, pregnant, left and went back home to live with her parents, John Mose Conley & Julia Sewell. (Found a Mose Conley, (1920 census), with wife Sopphie.) When Maude gave birth to Lola, Maude's father John Mose Conley, would not 'let' Maude give Lola the Hinson name??? See what I mean? I would really LOVE to find something on this. Lola said it doesn't matter to her, which ever way it comes out. Maude then married (abt. 1934) Thomas (Buddy) Jefferson McGovern, and he gave Lola his name, and raised her as his. I do not know if this, (Cey?McGovern) marriage occured in GA., or FL., as they did end up living in FL. Can you help me in anyway on this problem. Lola would really love to know something. I know a lot of things back then were NOT recorded, but.....and she can handle whatever is thrown her way. I would LOVE to find a marriage for Marvin & Maude, but that may not be the case....things happened... :-( Thanks for any help in this mystery. Kay PM...thanks that for looking.
