They have removed all of the trees and woods, etc. All is left is a few trees and the graves. It is VERY easy to get to now. Wish there was somehow to protect that old cemetery from vandals, etc. The graves are in terrible shape, it is a shame that people forget about those so long ago. Morris Joseph Williams born January 19, 1915 died January 26, 1990 buried Maple Hill Cemetery, Fairfield, Wayne County, Illinois birth place Lampasas, Texas He was also known as “Amos” to many. Very few of his friends and acquaintances in Illinois knew him by any other name. To his mother, father, sisters, brother, aunts, uncles and cousins in Texas he was known as “Son”; he said because he was so bright. He lived in Texas until about 1936 at which time he moved to Illinois. He worked for H.H. Weinert until Mr. Weinert died and then for the H.H. Weinert Estate. He was also an independent oil producer. He was very successful and enjoyed life to the fullest. He loved bird dogs and hunting. He had championship field trial dogs and won a National Field Trial Championship with one of his dogs. He judged a lot of field trials. After his death he was elected to the National Field Trial Hall of Fame, located in Tennessee. He also fished a great deal. He was very proficient with a fly rod and popping bug, fishing for largemouth bass and pan fish in the lakes and ponds in Southern Illinois and! Kentucky. He married Eunice Isabel Musgrave, a Fairfield, Wayne County, Illinois native on April 4, 1941. Shortly thereafter he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He held the rank of corporal and served in the Pacific theater during World War II. He drove heavy machinery building airstrips and drilled water wells on islands only recently taken from the Japanese. He never spoke much about his wartime experiences. He liked to play poker and was quite good at it. He played in high stakes poker games with as much as $10,000 won or lost on a single hand. The only record I have of your mother is from the book, "Owen Cravey of Bertie District, North Carolina and His Descendants 1720-1988", by John C. Head. In it it shows that your grandmother's maiden name was Viola Ray Cravey and that she married Albert Williams in 1914. I would, however, like to have up to date information on your family since that time. I show her to be one of six children of Fletcher Cravey (1874-1945) and Lena Stevens (1877-1907). Spires Town was mentioned in an article about Vilula Missionary Church. This church was constituted in 1874. It was organized with members who came from Hopewell Church: John McLeod, Allie McLeod, Dr. William Burch, Seaborn Burch, Philip Reaves, Josiah Reaves, and John McCranie from Parkerson. The first church was a log house and built by John H. Burch, Peter A. Bowen, and John Barron. It began with about 25-30 members. These were scattered over an area from the home of Mr. R.F. Burch,Sr., "about six miles from Eastman, to Spires Town in Telfair County and from the Southern Railroad to the Ocmulgee River", it being the only church within this radius. This church is situated about _? miles from Eastman in the Vilula Militia District of the county. Can anyone tell me the names of these Spires, and help pinpoint just where they lived? You helped me before a little over a year ago with my great grandmother Ola Adams Whitehead, I have since completed as much work on my father's lines as was possible, the ONLY ancestor I was unable to find was my Grandfather Adams. I noted your beautiful contribution in my formal history that unlocked our Blakey lines. I had found the 1850 census report with George in the household, but he did not show up in "A" 1860 report, apparently there is more than one....a researcher in Florida who is quite noted responded to a query I posted who felt that since George, Ludy and Thomas were not in that census report they had probably died in one of the epidemics common in those days. She was very helpful but had to be away for several months but did offer to help me work further on the lines when she returned as she felt that my George had to have been related to one of the Adams in the vicinity as they were all and extended family. Again, thank you so very much, from the depths of my heart. you have given me one fourth of my father's family to the generations to come. W, 32 father born SC Victoria, 25 G W 4 Charles H 2 Olia , 5 1900 Gwinnett County Adams, George W, April 1850 married 27 years Catharine, 45, 3 births, 3 living Charlie H, June 1878, 22 Lessie, Aug 1888, 11 Elmore, 1891, 9 From Dodge County Newspaper Clippings, Vol IV, p.1978 (May 26, 1927 edition) Mrs. Victoria Adams died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E.W.Reid, Saturday. Burial took place in the Chauncey Cemetery Sunday. Mrs. Adams was born and reared in Gwinett County and was 72 years old. She moved to Dodge County about 25 years ago and has resided at Suomi until about a year ago, when she came to the home of her daughter in Eastman. She was a consistent member of Chauncey Methodist Church. Mrs. Adams is survived by three children, Elmer Adams of Chauncey, Mrs W.W.Reid of Eastman, and George Adams of Canada.
