Author: coffeemichael Surnames: Coffee, Willcox Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.georgia.counties.telfair/2539/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi, I am looking for photos and/or official record of the burial and/or re-interment of General John E Coffee. He died in 1836 on his plantation somewhere near Jacksonville, GA and was supposed to be buried about 5 miles south of JAX in the same cemetary as Gen Mark Willcox (son in law) and was then moved to McRae City Cemetary in about 1921-22 for some unknown reason. Also if anyone knows the name of or location of his plantation we would be greatful. Gen John E Coffee is my GGGgrandfather. I would swear I had found a photo of his gravesite on my other computer but it died and was lost and now I can't seem to find anything except that he is supposed to be currently located in McRae City Cemetary. Author: bsimon27481 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.georgia.counties.telfair/1444.4.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I will sign on for the free 14 days once I hear from you, so I can send you more of what I have. email me at bsimon2748@aol.com I don't have a lot more than what is pasted but some could be expanded. My grandfather Joseph Norman, was your Great-Grandfather's younger (and only) brother. Parents are listed in the census usually as Jack and Ginnie Smith of Jacksonville GA. JN Smith tended to lie about who he was and where he was from-often put England as place of birth. However I have background pieces that let me know it was not true. First before I did all this (I did not know my father - met him once, talked on the phone a few times in early 1970's) I found my grandfather's sister-in-law - the wonderful, the outrageous and funny Sallie Mae Phillips of Georgia and then Florial City Florida. She married my grandmother's brother. She had met him many times and knew his older sisters and brother. She let me know know he was from rural Georgia though most ended up in Jacksonville FLORIDA rather than GA. Years after JNS died I got his death Certificate which listed Jacksonville GA as place of birth and sent for the census for my grandfather's birth. I am kind of stuck before 1870 but I'll fill you in on all of it. I have copies of the census records. Jack (Jackson) Smith is my stuck line. However if you search on Ancestry for his wife you will find tons. Virginia McLean is the daughter of a large and well researched Georgia family. her father died in the Civil War. parents John McLean and Cornelia McLean. they're in 1860 census and forward. family came from Scotland to the Carolinas to GA. my birth father did say they were originally McLeans from Mull, an island off scotland. With JNS's tendency to lie though, it's not 100%. Check in with me if you'd like Barbara Simon West Orange, NJ Check out the family tree for Joseph Norman Smith on Ancestry.com. http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/ListView.aspx?tid=744559&pg=0 see if this link works.
