Bryant Dies From Pistol Wound The Shooting Which Occurred Early Wednesday Morning Supposed to Have Been Accidental The news of the fatal wounding and subsequent death of Mr. J. Horace Bryant, the result of a pistol ball piercing his left breast, the gun being fired by Mr. Bryant himself, was the source of great sorrow to his many friends as the news spread rapidly Wednesday morning. The shooting took place about four o’clock yesterday morning at the home of Mr. Bryant and in a room adjoining that occupied by his wife and child who were awakened by the report of the pistol. As he had been troubled for several nights by strange dogs about his place, it is the presumption that Mr. Bryant was after these when he stumbled over some object in the room causing the pistol, which he held in his hand, to be fired unexpectedly, as he was in his night clothing and other evidence about the room giving rise to this opinion. Mr. Bryant was an industrious farmer and one of the county’s good citizens. He resided near Norwich, 12 miles west of Butler, and was about 43 years of age. Besides his wife, who before her marriage was Miss Hattie McGinty, Mr. Bryant is survived by one child, a brother, Mr. G.F. Bryant, of Rupert, and his mother. 3. We have a listing for a Pope Cemetery in the Panhandle District Off CR 108 LL 78 Dist 14 Britton Pope 1802 - Jan. 1857 (father of Cullen A.J. Pope) Other unnamed burials (2 adults, 1 child) I believe this was land where the Pope family lived. Does anyone know if a tombstone actually existed for this burial? I think I picked up the info from Washington Memorial Library in their loose papers for cemeteries. Uncle Billie was 76 years old the day before he died. He was a Confederate soldier and was in every battle of the civil war but was never wounded. He had been a member of the Missionary Baptist church thirty-five years and lived a Christian life. Uncle had been in our home twenty-three years and we all loved him dearly. He was in feeble health for quite a while but bore his suffering as a “good solider” saying he was only waiting for the Lord’s appointed time. Interment took place at Mt. Pisgah cemetery funeral service being conducted by his pastor, Rev. Matthews of Macon. May we so live that we may meet dear uncle in the land where sad partings are no more. Miss Lenna, as she was familiar known, was born in this county August 26, 1874, and joined the Methodist Church of Butler when thirteen or fourteen years of age and to those who knew her well, it would be superfluous to say that she was a Christian, for they knew she was. It was clearly evidenced in her conversation and maintained by her during life. She was not demonstrative in her life, either socially or religiously, but rather an even tenor pervading her entire demeanor, manifesting that she was guided and directed by a “Power” within and in which she solely confided for that guidance, which day by day and hour by hour so beautifully portrayed the sustaining and keeping power of God’s grace appointed to his children. She, as other members of the family, are much indebted to the sweet disposition and consecrated life of a sainted mother for the strong characteristics which dominated Miss Lenna in her life, and which are moving and actuating other members of her family. Miss Lenna suffered long with a lingering illness, yet she bore her suffering with patience and Christian fortitude, oftentimes expressing the sweet assurance of her acceptance with God and readiness to depart and be with Him where suffering and sorrow are unknown. Tuesday morning at 10:30 o’clock her sweet spirit disrobed of the tenement of clay was wafted to the home and heaven of the good. The funeral service was conducted from the Methodist church by her pastor, Rev. L.A. Harrell, the interment taking place at the Butler cemetery. She leaves three brothers, Messrs. J. (article torn), J.C. and M.R. Cameron, all of Butler, also three sisters, Mrs. –(article torn) lia (Julia?) Boland, of Oxford; Mrs. H.J. (article torn) orter (Porter?) and Miss Annie Cameron, of Butler, to mourn their departure of this, their beloved sister. To these bereaved ones the Herald extends sympathy. 2. The brother and sisters who survived Lenna Cameron would be: John T. Cameron, James Chapel Cameron, and Murray R. Cameron. Annie Lou Cameron & Katie Cameron (Mrs. Dr. Hugh J. Porter). I am unfamiliar with the Mrs. Boland. Perhaps someone else will know that one. There was another sister named Nancy according to census born about 1867. Perhaps she is Mrs. Boland. She also had a brother W. Asa Cameron who died March 11, 1909. ----- Original Message ----- From: "GAGenWeb Archives" <archives@poppet.org> To: <GATAYLOR-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, June 21, 2005 2:45 PM Subject: [GATAYLOR-L] Ga-Taylor Co. 3. Well, Virginia, we have something in common for sure! I, also, was raised in Pensacola and went to the Sky Chief and other theaters in Pensacola. Yes those were good ole days. Didn't have to worry about children getting kidnapped and such then. At least, I don't think my parents and grandparents worried about it much. I, too, was given money to go to the matinee on Saturday's. My sister, neighborhood friends and I would go on Saturdays and spend the whole day there. I remember the westerns and the Hardy Boys. My great grandmother Lula Alice Barefield Baxter who was born in Taylor County lived with us until her death in 1954. I don't remember much about her because I was just a young thing (age six). I do remember she was an invalid because of strokes. One of my main memories of her was when we had a fire in our home. We lived on the corner of Jackson and M Streets. She, my sister and I were put on a wooden trailer and taken across the street until the fire was out. It didn't burn the house down. The fire was contained to a couple of closets and around two connecting bedrooms. Probably, a electric outlet fire. I don't remember exactly. Slaughter. She was just four years eight months old; the task of life was finished on Monday morning Feb. 18, 1918. An attack of pneumonia was the cause of the little one’s death. She was only confined to her bed one week, and she bore her sufferings as a grown person, and spoke of seeing the throne of God and said as her last words: “I am going Home,” and now she is resting safe in the arms of Jesus. Weep not dear father and mother, for we know where Elizabeth has gone and let us strive to meet her in the better world where there’ll be no more parting. It was sad to look upon the still white form as it lay in the white casket, but her soul is in Heaven. Interment took place at Wesley cemetery, funeral services being conducted by Rev. L.A. Harrell, of Butler. A precious one from us has gone, A voice we loved is still; A place is vacant in our home Which never can be filled. Parks and took the sweet young wife from this home to the eternal Home above. She was before marriage Miss Elna Myers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Myers. She was in her eighteenth year, being born on May 8, 1899. She was sick for some time and suffered a great deal, but bore her suffering as a “good soldier” – bravely and patiently, looking for God who “doeth all things well.” Her faith in God was so strong that she was resigned and willing to say: “Thy will be done.” It was hard to give her up and our hearts are torn with grief over our great loss, still we have that sweet hope that some day we will meet her again in that home where there is no more grief or pain, no more sickness or death. We feel like our loss is her eternal gain. She leaves a devoted husband, a father, mother, three sisters and a brother to mourn her death. We would point them to Christ who alone can heal the broken heart and pray that this sad occasion may bring each one to a closer walk with God. May heaven seem dearer to us because she is there. Mrs. Parks was a sweet, gentle woman; none knew her but to love her. She was laid to rest in Pine Level cemetery, there to await the resurrection morning when the dead in Christ shall rise again. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Lumpkin. May our Heavenly Father keep her loved ones and fill the aching void in their lives. And may we so live that we may meet Elna again the land where sad partings are known no more. Whittle Mrs. W.H. Whittle, a most estimable Christian lady, about 65 years of age died at her home five miles north-west of Butler Tuesday afternoon at 5 o’clock after a lingering illness of several weeks. She and her husband, Mr. Whittle, had been married for more than fifty years and reared quite a large family of sons and daughters, most of whom are living. She was a life long member of the Methodist church at the Camp Ground, andher walk in life, both at home and abroad were daily exemplifications of the saving power of the Son of God. She possessed a very beautiful trait of character, in that she never spoke of the faults and failings of others, but rather had a good word of cheer for the fallen and wayward. She was indeed and in truth a good Christian woman. Besides her aged husband, she leaves one daughter, Mrs. Ophelia Heath, and four sons, Perry, Henry, John and Sidney Whittle to mourn their loss. Her remains were interred in the Camp Ground cemetery Wednesday afternoon, the funeral services conducted by Rev. J.T. Adams.
