Brown, Howard Our neighboring city, Howard, was veiled in sadness Monday, June 23rd (the date should be June 3rd), occasioned by the death and funeral service of Mrs. J.S. Brown, a life-long citizen of that town. Mrs. Brown was stricken with paralysis several weeks ago, and for several days thereafter, hope was entertained for her recovery, but a second stroke a few days ago blighted that hope, and physicians and loved ones knew it was only a question of short time as to the final summons, which took place at 2 o’clock Monday morning. Mrs. Brown was the second companion of Mr. Joe S. Brown, the well-known depot agent at Howard, he having been in that service for more than 40 years. Mr. Brown’s first marriage was to Miss Savannah Lloyd, whose death occurred several years ago. He then married Miss Augusta Lloyd, the twin sister of his first wife, and whose death cast a gloom over the entire town. Mrs. Brown was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Lloyd, formerly of this county, and sister of Dr. W.F. Lloyd, who was a prominent minister in the South Georgia, Texas and Kentucky conferences of the M.E. Church South. She was a life-long member of the Methodist church having her membership with the church at Howard. She was true and loyal to her church and the cause of Christ. She was approached one time by one of the Stewards of the Howard church and when told what she was assessed for the church she said, that it was not enough and had the Steward to raise the assessment to a higher figure. The floral offerings were not only beautiful, but expensive, attesting to the high esteem in which she was held by many friends. The funeral service was impressively conducted by Rev. L.A. Harrell, of Butler, assisted by Rev. J.T. Adams, uncle of the deceased; business houses of the town, during the funeral service, were closed in respect for her memory. The following nephews of Mrs. Brown acted as pall-bearers: Messrs. W.M. Brown, John H. Brown, O.O. Brown, Rod Brown, Lewis Brown, all of Howard and E.C. Brown, of Macon. Mrs. Brown was in the 59th year of her age and besides her broken-hearted husband, she leaves one sister, Mrs. Stella Ramsey, of Quitman, Ga., two uncles, Mr. P.M. Adams, of Savannah and Rev. J.T. Adams, of Butler, Ga., and quite a number of other relatives who mourn their loss. He and another man, after hearing that the Union Army was coming, took their horses and those of their neighbors down to an island on a branch of Whitewater below his mill. Also along to help heard the horses was a young boy. The soldiers would have passed without knowing the horses were there except that after getting the horses over to this isalnd, the young boy wandered back up to the road chewing his tobacco. The soldiers saw him standing by the road, all alone and stopped to find out what he was doing by himself. They had plenty of tobacco with them and used this as a means of making friends. The young boy in answer to their question told them he was with two men who had brought their horses down to the creek. "Horses?" "Yes sir". "Where are they,? the soldiers asked. The boy told them about the island and , ov course, the soldiers were delighted as this was precisely what they had been looking for. Mrs. Averett,(Permelia Layfield Averett) meanwhile, upon learning of the Army's approach and having heard stories of how they were ransacking homes, taking whatever they wanted, especially feather mattresses that they sould slit with their pocketknives and shake the feathers out and watch them blow away to make sure no table silver or other valuables were hidden there, wrapped herself in a towel and go in bed as if she was sick. The soldiers started pulling her and the mattresses off the bed when the commanding officer came in and told them not to bother the sick lady. Of that number there are not many who have been members of the church of Christ for 71 years. But so it was with Mrs. Lydia Martin, consort of William Martin who departed this life at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ophelia Amerson, June 15, 1908. Sister Martin joined the Methodist church at the age of 14 and it was the privilege of the writer to visit her home a number of years ago and from then until the time of her death he was intimately acquainted with her. And during all these years she ever exemplified the saving power of the Gospel of Christ. Life's pathway to her, did not always lead along the sunny slopes of mountains green, or through valleys bestudded with blooming flowers. But rather up its rough and rugged way and down through the vale of affliction. The horizon of her life was often covered by dark clouds and the drapery of her couch was often the pall of suffering and sorrow. Yet amidst the darkest hour and deepest gloom she, like Job could exclaim, "Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him." It was her misfortune to lose her husband by death nearly 25 years ago. She has also been called upon to give up four sons, and none but a mother can know what it is to give up a boy, yet her faith in God was unshaken. Three years ago she was stricken with blindness, followed by bodily affliction which rendered her helpless, and for more than a year she was confined to her bed, yet she murmured not, but to the contrary often sang, "My soul shall quit this mournful vale and soar to worlds on high." None but the Father in Heaven can know how much she suffered, and none but He how much she trusted. But she is gone. After having told her loved ones goodbye, a sweet smile played upon her face, and tenement of clay ceased to suffer and the redeemed spirit went home to God. He later received a bounty grant of 640 ac. in Davidson Co, TN & assigned the bounty to Benjamin Sheppard. About 178?, Jehu Gaultney & the Mitchells migrated to Augusta, Richmond Co, GA. Jehu likely made his home along the western border of White Oak Creek where he received a citizen's bounty of 250 ac. in 1781. By the time the Gaultneys arrived in GA, the state was in the hands of the British & Loyalist armies. Augusta had been captured in Jan. of 1780 by Loyalist Col. Thomas Brown. Not long after arriving in Augusta, Jehu Gaultney enlisted in Richmond Co. Militia led by Patriot Col. Greenberry Lee. In April 1781 the Patriots, consisting of GA & NC militia, including Lee's regiment of militia men from Richmond Co., began a successful attack known as the Siege of Augusta. On 20 Feb 1784, Jehu Gaultney was granted 250 ac. of land in Washington Co, GA by Governor. John Houstoun for his services rendered for the American cause during the war. Jehu likely sold this property as no record shows him to have ever lived in Washington Co. He also received a grant of 250 ac. along Great Kiokee Creek in Richmond Co. (now part of Columbia Co.) Ben resold this property to Jesse BARFIELD on Jul 21, 1855 for $71. Aug. 1, 1863, Benjamin Franklin GAULTNEY enlisted as private in Co. A, 12th Reg. of GA Cavalry State Guards commanded by Capt. W.H. ROBINSON & later Capt. McGOWAN. This regiment was probably part of Hardee's "little army" that harassed Union troops of General. Sherman during their destructive "March to the Sea" from Atlanta to Savannah. Ben GAULTNEY was among those soldiers who were detailed to guard Flint River Bridge at the close of the war in April. of 1865. After the war, Ben returned home & shortly thereafter moved with his family to the Gatlins Dist. of Macon Co, where he resumed a life of farming. In the 1870 census, his real estate was valued at $1400 & his personal estate valued at $600. According to a 1944 article in the "Butler Herald", Ben GAULTNEY moved his family to the Panhandle Dist. of Taylor Co, in 1871 & settled on an area known as the Graball "surrounded by heavily timbered mountain peaks & fertile valleys." During the harsh reconstruction years, Ben continued farming & carried his surplus crops to Macon in a covered wagon. In 1873, Ben GAULTNEY, along with Jim GOODWIN, Brantley MOSLY, John PETERMAN & Frank PETERMAN, chartered the Midway Baptist Church in the Panhandle Dist. of Taylor Co. along Little Patsilaga Creek. This old historic church played a prominent role in the lives of Ben's descendants, as his son, Rev. Monroe Tony GAULTNEY, pastored the church for more than 50 years, & today his descendants meet there annually for the Gaultney Family Reunion. On Dec. 23, 1881, Ben sold to James HARRIS for $750, 101 1/4 acres of land in the east half of Lot #79 & 50 acres in the southeast quarter. of Lot #80 , all in the 14th Dist. of Taylor Co. The family suffered a great loss in 1887 when a typhoid fever epidemic hit Taylor Co. claiming lives of numerous citizens. Within four months, Ben & Catherine laid to rest four of their sons, Zack, Judd, Rolfe & Julious, all of whom were buried in the Midway Cemetery. In 1891, Ben became paralyzed in the left side of his body due to a stroke. Two local physicians, Dr. C.F. FICKLING & Dr. W.C. BATEMAN, gave a medical report describing his physical & mental condition: "...he suffers from paralysis of the bladder muscles ... the left side of body, arm & leg partially paralyzed & the spine somewhat implicated ... his mind very much impaired." Ben received a pension from the state of GA for his service during the War Between the States. In his application he stated that he & his wife, both aged in years, were unable to work & they were both supported by their children at a total cost of $60 a piece annually. Joe H. BRUMBELOE, who served with Ben during the war, stated in a witnesses' oath for the pension application that Ben was "a physical & mental wreck. PETERMAN, a Taylor county man who has been in jail here for the past three months, was released by having served out a sentence imposed on him by Judge Newman at the last term of the United States court on a charge of making moonshine liquor. He was also fined $100 at the same time, but after serving out his three months term, PETERMAN took what is known as the 'poor convict oath,' which relieves him of the fine. As soon as PETERMAN was released he was re-arrested by Deputy Marshall Brown on a bench warrant charging him with conspiracy to kill a government witness, it having been proven at a preliminary trial held several months ago that he was in some way connected with the killing of Frank Wilcher by Ben Garrett at Butler last year. PETERMAN gave a $100 bond and was released. It was in evidence at the trial that the men who were connected with that affair had met at PETERMAN's blacksmith shop in Butler shortly before the killing of Wilcher by Garrett, and that PETERMAN had in his possession the pistol with which Wilcher was killed. Wilcher was a witness against Garrett and also PETERMAN, both of whom were charged with running an illicit still in Taylor County. After Garrett killed Wilcher, he defied the law of Taylor County until he finally made his escape and is still at liberty. The case against PETERMAN will come up at the next term of the United States court in this county. NOTES: Occupation: blacksmith. Served 7 years in prison (c 1912-1919) for murdering a man. Served as Marshall in Taylor Co, GA. Copy of marriage license. Lived in Taylor Co. until c1929 when he moved to Macon, GA. Lived in Macon 8 years until his death. Peterman, a man who has been before court several times on same charge, was on trial for illicit distilling, & his two cousins were principal witnesses against him. Main witness in evidence acknowledged to doing same thing that he accused his cousin of doing, & revelations showed that a feud existed between two families, young men being children of two sisters. In attempting to break down the testimony of a government witness, the attorney for the defense asked a man on the stand, "Were you not convicted of horse stealing?" The question startled the witness so that he partly rose from his seat, his face flushed, his eyes snapped & he indignantly denied assertion. Question itself killed witness' evidence & as he passed down he made a move as if to attack the lawyer, but the court bailiff, Mr. Case, hurried him out. It looked to the jury as if Judge Dunham was going to get in trouble but the judge was not perturbed in the least, & the incident passed off unnoticed by many in the courtroom. Judge Dunham conducted Peterman's case in a most able manner, & the jury was not out over ten minutes until verdict of not guilty was returned. REFERENCE: 'Butler (GA) Herald', 20 Aug 1912, p. 3: Blow Inflicted by J.T. Peterman Produced Death of Allen Parr. Two men, erstwhile good friends, met at home of Asa Simmons, engaged in quarrel, later resorting to weapons. Parr receives wounds that cause his death. Whole of Panhandle district, one of finest localities in county, has been shadowed by tragedy enacted Sat. afternoon, causing fever of excitement that will be long while in overcoming. Not since days many years ago when Fielding Caldwell was killed by Mr. Byrd in self-defense has excitement reigned as high in Panhandle as it did all Sun. As result of uncalled-for disagreement between two men, Allen Parr is dead & J.T., or Tom Peterman, as he is familiarly known, occupies cell in county jail in Butler. Peterman claims self-defense for himself, but as he has seen fit to wave commitment trial in Justice C.M. Lucas' court in Panhandle, he must remain in jail until meeting of grand jury in Oct for investigation of case. Difficulty between Parr & Peterman occurred at home of Asa Simmons where lives Mrs. Jane Simmons & her granddaughter, Minnie Simmons, girl about 18 years of age, family being near neighbors & tenants of Peterman. It is claimed by Peterman that he went to Simmons home Saturday afternoon about 3 PM to serve notice upon tenants that they must hunt shelter elsewhere. Parr, who is about 33 years old & unmarried, & suitor of young woman, became enraged with Peterman for his threat of evacuation & made violent attack upon him with large jackknife. Owing to long standing friendship between himself & Parr, Peterman says he tried to reason with Parr, explaining his reason for dismissing Simmons family from his place but this did not satisfy Parr, who, according to his statement consulted with women for awhile in house, came into yard again armed with knife & pistol. Here stories of Peterman & women conflict, latter contending Peterman returned to his house, distance of 100 yards, & in few moments reappeared at Simmons home with his gun, when quarrel was resumed. At subsiding moment, they say, young woman & Parr sprang into his buggy & attempted to leave scene when weapons were again present by two men. No shots were fired by Peterman but he struck Parr across head with his gun, felling man (Parr) to ground, afterwards picking him up, placing him in his buggy & called to Simmons to take him (Parr) to his father's home. Peterman, however, denies going for or having a gun. Peterman sticks to story that Parr, attempting to leave place & standing near his buggy, heaped upon himself & family vile epithets at same time threatening his life. Peterman says he warded off pistol with his left hand striking man (Parr) with his right hand. Parr, losing his balance, fell backward striking his head against hub of buggy producing wound that caused his death. Dr. J.E. Mangham was summoned to dress Parr's wound, which was not at first considered dangerous. Later in night, however, he grew rapidly worse, expiring about dawn Sun. morning. Peterman was arrested Sun. morning, carried before Justice Lucas for commitment trial, which was waived & then brought to Butler & placed in jail. Parr was 33 yrs. old, son of W.W. Parr, a hard worker & well thought of in community. REFERENCE: 'Butler (GA) Herald,' 27 Aug 1912, p. 3: Sheriff Beeland carried Tom Peterman to Cols. Sat. to be placed in jail there till meeting of Taylor Co. grand jury first week in Oct. It will be remembered that Peterman waived commitment trial for killing of Allen Parr in Panhandle Dist. on Sun. 18th Aug. REFERENCE: 'Butler (GA) Herald,' 27 Aug 1912, p. 3: Card from Emory Parr. Dear Editor, 'Butler Herald.' In name of justice & truth & for sake of an outraged community, I desire to give facts as brought out by eyewitnesses & other circumstances about killing of Allen Parr by Tom Peterman, because statement made by you in last issue of your paper, based on statements made to you by Peterman are wholly misleading & without slightest foundation in fact. It was stated by eyewitness that Allen Parr was seated in his buggy when Peterman came up with his gun, struck Allen with barrel thereof, from which blow he died; Peterman being angered by presence of Allen at home of Jane Simmons. It does not mend matters nor satisfy mind of sensible people to say that a murdered man fell out of his buggy & struck his head against hub of his buggy. This transparent falsehood is so palpably false as to carry it s own ridiculous falsehood upon its face. It is stated in your last issue that Allen Parr was suitor of young woman in question. Peterman, being a married man of family, could not have been a rival in that sense. It is shocking & deplorable enough to his family without attempting to add heinous varnish & glamour of his falsehood to this outrageous killing of a peaceable citizen. I would be less than a man & citizen of GA, to say nothing of my being a brother of man who was thus cowardly & outrageously assaulted & killed, were I not to make this correction. Truth of matter is that cowardly excuses & make believe frame-ups of self defenses have been too often used to cloak conscience & guilty, appease public conscience. Are the upright & law abiding citizens of this good county dulled to sense of truth, justice & vindication of law? Regardless of personal bereavement that this homicide has placed on me, I feel that truth should be known about assassination that there should be an arousement of fair, searching & impartial investigation & prosecution of facts, & this is my apology for asking space in your paper. Emory F. Parr, 22nd Aug 1912 REFERENCE: 'Butler (GA) Herald,' Tuesday, June 10, 1913, Page One: Plea in Behalf of J.T. Peterman. (To) Editor Butler Herald - Please allow me space in your paper to say a few words in behalf of our J.T. Peterman, resident of your county & now serving a sentence in this county. He has been under my charge since transferred to this county from state farm Feb. 11th past. Has never given least of trouble to Warden, myself or any of guards or anyone else so far as I am aware, & has made friends of all free citizens that have become acquainted with him. He makes a noble prisoner & faithful hand, so far as his health & strength admits. He suffers a great deal with appendicitis which he informs me troubled him much before he came to county, & fact that continued heavy work is detrimental to disease, moves us to ask a helping hand in his behalf. But as you are aware, there is no easy jobs in a chain gang, it is quite a pleasure to me to recommend him as full worthy to receive all benefits of any doubts that may exist in minds of his friends. As to justice demanded in his case, we think he should have this help & sympathy now & before continued confinement & hard labor weakens his life, & would respectfully suggest that someone interested make a move in that direction & see what can be done in matter. We feel that if have flowers to strew over his grave, that he & family would appreciate them much more here we enjoy sweets of his life. So let's move & show him & family that we really do sympathize with them & are willing at least to show a helping hand to our friends in their distress. Peterman were pleased to greet him on streets of Butler Monday for first time in eight years or more, intervening years having been spent in Georgia penitentiary upon a lifetime sentence imposed upon him for killing of Allen Parr, as a result of a combat between two men, when Peterman struck Parr on head with butt of a shot gun, resulting in Parr's death. Eight years' service that Peterman gave state was spent in road work in Walton county, where many friends, both among county officers and citizenry of Walton County, number of whom became interested in his behalf to extent of lending their assistance in seeking release for him. Peterman says that he is more than happy to return to his family and friends and will spend remainder of his days in making for himself a good name, such as no man will be ashamed. After spending a few weeks in visiting among relatives, he says he will settle down at some vocation at which he can make an honorable and comfortable support for his family. 3. John Adams features the "Election of 1860"....and since many of our ancestors were right here in Taylor County for that vote, it is very interesting. His statistics by state and vote is very interesting. The Butler Herald articles (1909) have several interesting articles --- Escape from the Jail; fatal disagreement while building a wire fence; murder of Mr. Wiggins. (you can follow these through several issues of the paper) The many obituaries will be of interest to all of you. I find the "news items" so valuable because they mention trips, socials, school events that you might not otherwise know about. Your own comments about the issue are always welcome! Virginia

    3. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/taylor/bios.html We keep getting more family bio information on-line. I think this makes it easier for a researcher to quickly make connections with the various families in Taylor County. So many of us have inter-connecting marriages that it can get very confusing! (In fact sometimes I have to make some pencil charts!) My goal is to get a simple bio on-line for every family in Taylor County's history -- especially those in the 1860 census. I enjoy working with individuals on this, so if you have the data, and want some help in putting it all together, I'll be happy to work with you. Virginia Crilley

Theus On Friday afternoon about four o’clock occurred the death of Mr. T.B. Theus. He had been sick about two weeks, and all that physicians and loved ones could do was in vain. His Master called and he was ready to go “enter into the joy of His Lord” who had guided and led him through life. He was born August 7th, 1841 and peacefully passed into the keeping of his Savior May 3rd, 1918. In this death Taylor County loses another veteran of the Civil War, his wife a devoted husband and children a loving father. Oh, it is hard to part with our loved ones, but we hope by the grace of God we may meet in the heaven of eternal rest. He was a member of the Primitive Baptist church, and was true to the faith in which he believed. He is survived by a brokenhearted wife, ten children, and several grandchildren, all residing in this state. One sister, Mrs. J.P. Starr and two brothers, R.A. Theus and G.W. Theus, of Texas. His remains were laid to rest in Bethlehem cemetery Saturday afternoon, funeral services being conducted by Elder Young.
