Mathews Died May 21, 1918 The death angel visited the home of Mrs. Mathews and took from them their loving mother. Weep not dear children for mother is at rest, she is called to that happy home where there is no pain or sorrow. Oh how hard it is to give up one of our loved ones in death. Oh, how hard it is to look on their dear face for the last time. Mrs. Mathews was a true Christian woman, member of the Free Will Baptist church of Potterville; laid to rest in Potterville cemetery Wednesday afternoon, burial services conducted by Rev. C.H. Moore. Weaver Died Unexpectedly In Atlanta Death, Which Occurred at Ten O’clock Yesterday, Result of Injuries Received in Automobile Accident Tuesday. Funeral at Reynolds Today. Like a bolt from clear skies came the news yesterday of the sad and untimely death of Hon. W. Frank Weaver, former Mayor of Reynolds, and at the time of his death serving his first term in the State Senate from this the twenty-third district, which is composed of the counties of Crawford, Houston and Taylor. His death, which occurred at 10 o’clock Wednesday morning at St. Joseph’s infirmary, was the result of injuries he received Tuesday, when the automobile in which he was riding collided with another car near the Terminal station in Atlanta. Both branches of the legislature adjourned out of respect to the memory of Mr. Weaver as soon as the announcement of his death reached the capitol. Committees were appointed by President Oliver and Speaker Holder to attend the funeral and make any necessary arrangements. The Senate committee is as follows: Senators W.P. Andrews, of the Thirty-Fifth; M.J. Yeomans, of the Eleventh; H.H. Merry, of the Ninth; J.B.G. Logan, of the Thirty-Fourth, Floyd M. Blackwell, of the Fortieth, and R.T. Humber, of the Thirteenth. The house committee is composed of: Representatives McCrory, of Schley; Foy, of Taylor; Wright, of Jones; Richardson, of Houston and Baldwin, of Talbot. Senator Weaver was 38 years old, a son of Rev. and Mrs. Z.T. Weaver, prominent citizens of Reynolds for twenty years, but now residents of Perry. A wife and five children, the two youngest twins born last Christmas survive him as does also a brother, Mr. J.M. Weaver, of Reynolds. A coincidence in connection with Senator Weaver’s death is the fact that at the last session of the legislature Senator A.A. McCurry, of Hartwell, was run down by an automobile on the streets of Atlanta and died within a few days from his injuries. Mr. Weaver was a graduate of the University of Georgia and was prominent in collegiate social circles, being identified with the fraternity life of the institution and taking a prominent part in athletics. His record as a member of the bar of Georgia is a brilliant one, while as a man and a citizen he was regarded with highest esteem throughout this section and wherever his acquaintance extended. The news of his unexpected death is a great shock to our people and has cast a shadow of gloom over the county. The body of Mr. Weaver is due to arrive in Reynolds this morning accompanied by committees above named, as well as relatives and friends who were summoned to his bedside as soon as the seriousness of his condition was realized. Funeral services over the remains of Mr. Weaver will take place from the family residence at three o’clock this afternoon. Adams of Wesley community to learn of his serious illness from typhoid fever. While his condition is serious hopes are entertained for his recovery. The Butler Herald Thursday, July 18, 1918 Page One Mr. J.H. Adams Crosses Great Divide The Herald, with hundreds of other Taylor County citizens, deplore the death of Mr. John H. Adams which occurred at his residence in the northwestern part of the county Tuesday afternoon about 7 o’clock. Mr. Adams had been ill for quite a while with typhoid fever, which was of a very malignant type, and while he had the best of medical attention, yet no medical treatment or nursing could abate the ravages of this dread disease. Mr. Adams was about 48 years of age and was not only regarded as one of Taylor County’s best and most honorable citizens in the community in which he lived but was so regarded throughout the county. Mr. Adams was a model farmer, so that crops of all kind responded fully and freely to his magic touch and was looked upon as standard authority in the agricultural realms of the county. He was also a very public spirited man, and a leader in those things which were for the betterment of conditions in the county. He took a very active part in the fairs which have made this county famous throughout southwest Georgia. And so with every public enterprise, Mr. Adams was fully identified. But above all, Mr. Adams was a Christian – one whose walk and every day life was in accordance with the profession which he made. His Christian affiliations were made with the Primitive Baptist Church at Shiloh, and not only the church, but the entire community have sustained an irreparable loss. He leaves a heart-broken wife and five children to mourn their sad loss in the death of husband and father. The remains of Mr. Adams were laid to rest at Shiloh cemetery yesterday afternoon at 4 o’clock, funeral service conducted by Elders Fuller and Monsees. The Butler Herald Thursday, July 25, 1918 Page Three Reynolds Local News Prof. W.M. Parker and Mr. A.J. Crawford attended the funeral of Mr. J.H. Adams at Shiloh last week. The Butler Herald Thursday, July 25, 1918 Page Five Card of Thanks We wish to express our thanks and gratitude to our many friends for their kindness and sweet words of comfort during the illness and death of our dear husband and father. We especially wish to thank Drs. Snider, Mangham and Carter, also the kind nurse, Mrs. Smith. We desire the prayers of each of these dear friends in this, the saddest and darkest hour of our lives. May God’s richest blessings rest upon each of you. Mrs. J.H. Adams and Children The Butler Herald Thursday, July 25, 1918 Page Five Local News It is a source of regret to the many friends of Mr. Paul Bickley of Wesley community, to learn of his critical illness from typhoid fever. This is the fourth case of this dreaded malady in the immediate vicinity of Wesley church within the past few weeks, one of these cases being that of Mr. John H. Adams and from which he died ten days ago. Say not the story of her life is ended, for it has only begun in sweet fields of Eden. Maudie was a true Christian woman, uniting with the Missionary Baptist church at the early age of twelve years. In early womanhood she was united in marriage to Mr. Lee Daniel. To them was born one child who was named Ruby. After marriage she joined the Freewill Baptist church to be with her husband. She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. B.F. Greene; four sisters, viz.: Mrs. F.E. Daniel, Mrs. Nannie Mae Rumph, Misses Kathleen and Lucy Greene; a husband and one child; and a host of friends and relatives. Let us weep not, dear ones, for we know that she is waiting for us at the pearly gates. Let us strive to meet her there where there will be no more goodbyes and no farewell tears to shed. Both bride and groom were attired in snow white suits, and were attended by Mrs. Childs, as matron of honor, and Mr. G.L. Sealy, as best man. The above announcement will be read with interest by the scores of warm friends of both Miss Bartlett and Mr. Brooks throughout the state. The Butler Herald Thursday, May 30, 1918 Page Five Bartlett – Brooks A wedding which was of great interest to people over the county was that of Miss Vera Bartlett and Mr. Jack Brooks which was solemnized at the parsonage last Thursday May 23rd. On account of the illness of the brother of the bride no guests were present at the home as first planned but a few of the most intimate friends and relatives of the party accompanied them to the parsonage where a most impressive ceremony was solemnized. The bride is widely known over the county as she has been a most successful teacher in a number of our county schools. Her friends are numbered by her acquaintances. The groom is a very successful and popular businessman of Butler and has scores of friends here who are pleased to know they will make their future home here. We wish for them the happiest and most successful future and may God’s richest blessings be upon this happy couple. She had been sick only three days and no one knew how she suffered, though she bore her pain well. She was ready and willing to go when the time came, she said she was ready for the call when it came for she would live in a loving place above where there would be no more pain and sorrow. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Rogers of Rupert, was a kind and loving wife and mother and was always ready to make some one happy. She loved her husband and children in a way that everybody knew her said so. There is a vacant chair in this home which can never be filled by a more loving woman than Mrs. Minnie was. She leaves to mourn her loss a husband and six children, father and mother and sisters, brothers and many more loved ones. A Loved One The Butler Herald Thursday, June 6, 1918 Page Three In Memory of Mrs. W.H. Loyd It is with a sad and broken heart that I try to write of my departed sister-in-law, Mrs. Minnie Loyd. She departed this life May 10, 1918, making her stay here thirty-three years and eight days. Oh, it is so hard to give her up! She joined the Methodist church in her girlhood days and was ever a faithful member. She was loved by all who knew her, and was always ready with a willing hand to help all in need of assistance. She leaves a devoted husband and six little ones, besides her parents, three sisters and five brothers. May God bless the bereaved family. Weep not as those who have no hope, for it was God’s will to call her home. Oh, dear Minnie how we will miss you, but we hope to see you in that home not made by hands. She was laid to rest in Bloodworth cemetery May 11th at 12 o’clock. May the Lord help us to be ready at His coming and bless those she left behind. He was about 24 years old, the son of Elder Cornelious Roquemore, and a member of one of the most influential colored families in the county. The boy’s death is greatly deplored by all our people being held in high esteem by all who knew him. He was in the service only a short time, being among those recently sent from here to the training camp.
