Harris just sent me an interesting piece and this raises the question of the Reynolds Saw Mill. This indicates that the one near Reynolds was a "steam saw mill".... 1864. Does anyone have an idea of who the owner might have been? In my deeds, there was a sawmill mentioned in the vicinity of Panhandle on the Railroad which was west of Reynolds which sounds like it may be the one, unless there were several sawmills around there? (I've included those abstracts below) Andersonville Prison piece - Southern Historical Papers never heard. How was it possible to saw timber into planks without saw-mills? There were two water-power mills distant three and six miles respectfully, but such rude primitive affairs undeserving the name. The nearest steam saw-mill was twenty-three miles distant (near Smithville), the next at Reynolds, about fifty miles distant; but the great bulk of the lumber used, fully two-thirds, was brought from Gordon, a distance of eighty miles. ..... =========== pg 292 27 Jan 1853 Joseph H. I'm working on some history of the small community of Griffith which is north of Reynolds....very near the Agency land...Flint River... 1860 Census Taylor County lists several Griffith families, and they all seem to be related to Ennis Griffith who was 80 and the widow of James and came from North Carolina. One of them, James Griffith, Jr. was 40 in 1860 and listed as a Methodist Minister. I'm wondering what church he may have served in that neighborhood -- Panhandle District. If anyone has any files on this family, I'd love to work with you. Virginia Crilley

There is a Lucas Cemetery marked on a recent map I have of Taylor County. It is in the northeast section, west of the Flint River, but not far from Crawford County. There is a community marked "Griffith" near by. Does anyone know about this Lucas Cemetery or the town of Griffith? Since it is on the map, it must still be visible, and with tombstones. Maybe we have this under some other name. Seems strange that we don't have it listed. Virginia

I,too, have been researching for several years to find the burial site of my G-Grandfather: Seaborn Riley Stephens,1st Sgt,Co B,46th Ga. Inf. Schley Co Rifles wounded Sept 1,1864;died of wounds Sept 5,1864 Battle of Jonesboro,Ga. This research was begun by my Dad in 1937,and to date,no further progress has been made. Since Seaborn lived for several days,he might possibly have been in a "field" hospital around Jonesboro. I have checked cemeteries in and around the counties in the vicinity of Jonesboro and Atlanta, that are on line, but to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated.,and thanks! Would like to learn more about the Lockett family. James Lockett's estate in 1860 (Taylor Co) had 14 slave houses with 92 slaves; 1174 acres of land worth $81,777 Not sure how James relates to Sol Lockett and his family. Sol died around Sept 1912 July 26, 1904 Mrs. Lockett, wife of Sol Locket died on Sunday. Was about 60 years old. Large family of children, some of whom are Mrs. J.A. Matthews, James, Robert and Miss Emma Lockhett Interred in the family cemetery near Reynolds. I believe several of these Lockett family members are buried in the Lockett family cemetery near Reynolds. Is anyone related to this line? Virginia Crilley

Beautiful and Accomplished Young Lady Passed Away Tuesday Night One of Butlers most lovable young ladies died of pneumonia as the result of influenza, Wednesday morning about 2:30 oclock at Decatur, Ala., where she had been making her home during the past few months with her brother, Mr. Forrest Carson. She had been ill for two weeks prior to her death, but her condition was not considered alarming until just before the end came. In response to a telegram her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Carson, left last Thursday to be at her bedside. She rallied from the first attack and was thought to be improving early in the week when her father left her to return to his business here, while her mother remained at her bedside. Mr. Carson had been at home only one day when a message came that his daughter was in a dying condition. He left again Wednesday morning for Decatur, but death relieved his daughter of her suffering before he reached there. She has left us at the most useful and perhaps the happiest time in her beautiful life, thereby causing great sorrow and sadness throughout this section of the state where she was so well known and highly esteemed. At an early age in life Miss Lilly gave her heart and life to God and united with the Baptist church and in her the church had a willing hand and an obedient heart. She was about 28 years old and besides her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Carson, is survived by five brothers and one sister, viz: Mr. Forrest Carson, of Decatur, Ala., Mr. Wallace Carson in the U.S. Navy, Messrs. Tom and Robert Carson with the American Expeditionary Forces in France, Mr. Dan Carson, of Macon and Mrs. R.R. Dunwoody, of Macon. Her remains will be brought to Butler for interment. The body will probably arrive this afternoon. Funeral arrangements have not yet been made. Z.T. Weaver, Former Butler Baptist Pastor After an illness of several weeks, Rev. Z.T. Weaver, who four years ago moved from Reynolds to Perry to accept the pastorate of the Baptist church at that place, died at his home at Perry, Monday. The announcement of Rev. Mr. Weavers death will cause a sigh of regret to his innumerable host of warm friends throughout this section. He was one of the most prominent Baptist ministers in the state, and was universally beloved by those who knew him. Mr. Weaver, while living at Reynolds and pastor of the Baptist church there for six years served most acceptably the pastorate of the Butler Baptist church for a number of years. He was 68 years of age and is survived by his wife and one son, Mr. J.M. Weaver, of Reynolds. The remains of Mr. Weaver were taken to Reynolds for interment Tuesday. Windham together with all the contents of the building. This place will be better remembered as the Wallace or Stokes place, three and half miles north of Butler. Besides Mr. Windham the house was occupied by his son, Mr. Otis Windham and family. There was no one at home at the time the fire started except one of the small children of Mr. Windham, and he could give no account of the origin save the fact that the fire started in a pile of lint cotton stored in one room of the building. He reported the fire as soon as discovered, to his mother, who was visiting for the afternoon at the home of Mrs. J.G. Stokes, a near neighbor. When Mrs. Windham arrived at the scene of the fire the house was too far gone to save anything whatever of the contents of the home. There was no insurance on either building or furniture, and is a serious financial loss to Mr. Windham, who has the sincere sympathy of his many friends. Many have contributed in a financial way to Mr. Windhams loss, and others are requested to see Mr. G.W. Bivins and do so. The Butler Herald Thursday, October 17, 1918 Page Five Card of Thanks It is with sincere gratitude to one and all of our friends who so cheerfully responded to our aid in a financial way following our recent fire losses. These liberal contributions are thankfully received and appreciated beyond measure, but the motive that of human love and sympathy that prompted the donations is esteemed more than all else. When misfortune overtakes one of you, and we pray you may be spared this, you will find us as ready to go to your relief as you were to come to ours. With hearts full of love and gratitude to these true friends we are, Very truly yours. C.A. Windham Mr. and Mrs. O.D.
