The Taylor County Tracer always has surprises. I look forward to the future issues for tidbits about the estate of Mrs. S.E. Kirksey (p.23). Who is Mr. Jas. A. Hollis? Mrs. Leina (S.E.) Brown would be Lena Rivers Kirksey who married Sydney Brown. The memorial to Bettie Kirksey (1911) at the top of the page (23) mentions that her husband died a few months earlier; however, A.J. Kirksey died in 1909. I visited Crowell Cemetery in August - it was my first visit to Taylor Co. in quite awhile. Angie

Correction -- Just found out: Paul is speaking at the National Archives, not the state archives. They're next to each other and they share the same parking lot. =============================== www.georgialandlottery.com details Paul K. Graham's new books on the Georgia Land Lottery of 1805. Both books look like they would be a great help to us researchers. To commemorate the 200th anniversary of the 1805 Lottery he is speaking this Saturday morning at the Georgia Archives. Here's an article from the Dallas Morning News about one of the books - "1805 Georgia Land Lottery Fortunate Drawers and Grantees" Lloyd Bockstruck: New index enhances data on Georgia 08:17 PM CDT on Saturday, June 11, 2005 Most Americans know that among the lower 48 states, Texas is the largest. In addition, they might guess by its size that it has the greatest number of counties of all 50 states. Fewer people, however, can identify the largest state (in square miles) east of the Mississippi River with the second greatest number of counties in the nation. That distinction belongs to Georgia. Named in honor of King George, it was the only English colony in our country founded under the House of Hanover. All the other 12 colonies were established under the Stuarts. Between 1805 and 1833, Georgia held a series of lotteries to distribute vacant land among private citizens. Through these eight lotteries the Peach Tree State disposed of 27 million acres. (By comparison, Oklahoma distributed approximately 2 million acres in its land lottery.) The records of these lotteries constitute one of the main sources for identifying Georgia's early settlers and linking them to their actual place of residence in the state. Unlike the other former colonies, much of Georgia was surveyed on the grid system that was developed in New England and extended to the rest of the country after independence. Realizing that the response could be overwhelming, Georgia held its first land lottery in 1805. The powers that be required participants to have resided there for at least 12 months prior to the drawing. Every single, white, male citizen was eligible for one draw. Married men had two draws. Widows had a draw, and orphans whose fathers were dead and mothers had remarried were also eligible for one draw. While indexes have existed for these lotteries for a number of years, they had their shortcomings, including errors. This prompted Paul Graham to redo the 1805 land lottery. He utilized footnotes and endnotes to address specific problems, and his notes enhanced his work tremendously. He also features information from executive orders and documents. The Dallas Public Library has copies of the land grant books on microfilm, so with Mr. Graham's new index, family historians can reassemble the paper trail. He has arranged the text by county and district number and lot categories. He also provides the county of residence. He includes an index to all of the names in his 1805 Georgia Land Lottery Fortunate Drawers and Grantees. As with any governmental program, clerical and administrative mistakes can cause a lot of grief for citizens. For example, Joseph Tidwell found himself in such a predicament in the days of the lottery. His name appeared as Job Tidswell. That mistake forced him to wage his own battle. He was obliged to gather all kinds of testimony and affidavits from others to prove his case. The only consolation is the rich detail waiting to be discovered by his descendants. Lloyd Bockstruck supervises the genealogy section of the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library in Dallas. Address questions to Family Tree, Texas Living section, The Dallas Morning News, P.O. Box 655237, Dallas, TX 75265.

John Adams is sharing some information about the State Troops -- which I think you'll find very interesting. I was so excited to see it. These are the ones that we rarely get information on. Please, if you know any more about these men, share -- and pass it along to anyone you know who might be helped. http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/taylor/military/civilwar/rosters/5thstatecof.txt John included so much information about what they actually did. (And this is also hard to locate). You'll recognize these names I know! The Georgia State Troops were volunteer soldiers in state (rather than Confederate) service from October, 1861 to April, 1862 as defenders of the Georgia coast. Many companies enlisted as a unit in the Confederate army after their six-month term in the Georgia State Troops ended. These records can be viewed at the following Web Page: http://www.sos.state.ga.us/archives/what_do_we_have/online_records/default.htm

Eileen shared this on a list -- and I thought all of you might find this helpful. ========================= I received an email on another list this morning. The collection right now has 3580 collections. copied from the site: "Notice: As of Monday, August 22, 2005, there are still many items in this collection that have not been fully cataloged. About the collection This collection has been established to provide genealogical researchers throughout the world with access to a rich repository of histories created by families to record and celebrate the lives of their ancestors. The repository is hosted by the libraries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Joseph Smith, the founder of this Church said, "The greatest responsibility in this world that God has laid upon us is to seek after our dead." The intent of this archive is to help people everywhere identify ancestors and learn from their legacy. Click here to view this site: http://www.familyhistoryarchive.byu.edu Looks like a great place to research. Eileen
I don't know where the nursing home is in Butler, but all Mae needs to do is get someone there to tell her how to get on US 19 (also known as GA 3) heading south. You will pass through the small community of Rupert and continue on 19 south, Sand Bethel Church and cemetery will be on her right approximately 11 miles south of Butler. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Clark, Pennington, Griggs, Ivey, Gammage, Peavy, Summers, Coker Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/yd.2ADE/1470 Message Board Post: Hello, I am posting a message that I have previously posted on the Sumter, Dooly and Macon county boards, so please excuse the duplication if you have already seen this. I am seeking fellow descendants of my great grandmother Frances D Clark Pennington in hopes they may have information regarding her parents and/or siblings. My original post of 9 August: Can someone help with my ‘brick wall’? I am looking for parents or siblings of my great grandmother Frances Druscilla Clark Pennington. She is variously listed as Francis, Fannie, Fanny, Druscilla or Dusella on official and family documents. According to her tombstone she was born April 12, 1858. The family believes she was born in Sumter Co. near Andersonville GA but it could have been in Macon or Peach or Houston or Dooly counties (or on the planet Mars as I begin to think she arrived in Macon county to get married to my great grandfather fully grown!) She married John Lafayette Pennington on January 4, 1877 in Macon Co. The family is found living in district 1070 of Macon County in the 1880 census taken 7 June. Near neighbors are the Kitchens family and JL’s brother‘s family Andrew Jackson Pennington (buried in Oglethorpe cemetery.) She died Dec 31, 1903 probably in Sumter Co. as the family was living in district 993 in Sumter County in the 1900 census. She is buried in the Pennington family cemetery not far from the Pennington community in Sumter County district 993. She and John Lafayette had 16 children, 12 of whom lived to adulthood, so this means lots of descendants! The children were Henry J, James M, Mattie Lou, John Bunyon, Seaborn Cleveland, Wm Gordon, Judson Harrison, Mary Lee, Fanny D, Claudia, Clyde, Charles Weslie, an unnamed infant, Clark, Clayton and Minnie Jewell. I have listed them in the order of their births (to my best knowledge) with their birth years ranging from 1877 to 1903. John Lafayette Pennington was a farmer and he died April 21, 1907. He is buried beside Fanny and their minor children who did not survive infancy. His family, the Pennington’s, were (and still are) mainly found in Sumter and Macon counties (Americus, Andersonville and Oglethorpe areas) although family! scions are scattered throughout the world, including me in Virginia. With the generous help of fellow Pennington researchers who are not from John Lafayette’s line, I have been able to trace my Pennington ancestors back several generations. After John Lafayette died, his and Fanny’s minor children went to their older married siblings in Dooly county. They all went first to the household of John Bunyon Pennington in dist 1066, Unadilla, Dooly County (census 1910). After her marriage, my grandmother Mary Lee Pennington Griggs (m to William Clegg GRIGGS in 1909 Dooly County) raised Minnie Jewell in her home in Unadilla, GA. My great grandmother’s name sake, Fanny D married Clegg’s brother Robert Russell Griggs who also made his home in Unadilla. Many of the Pennington children remained in Dooly county and six of them are buried in Walnut cemetery in Unadilla and one other is buried in the cemetery in Pinehurst. Mattie Lou Pennington and Clyde Pennington each married husbands named SUMMERS (not related). Mattie Summers is buried in Oglethorpe cemetery in Oglethorpe, GA (Macon county) and Clyde Summers is buried in Evergreen cemetery in Perry GA (Houston county). Other in-laws are PEAVY (wife! to Wm Gordon), IVEY (husband to Claude), GAMMAGE (wife to John Bunyon), COKER (wife to Seaborn Cleve). These are all established Macon, Dooly and Houston county family surnames. There were several 2 yo & 12 yo possibilities for a Francis D Clark in the 1860 & 1870 census records in GA but my attempts to find a link from these entries to my great grandmother have been unsuccessful. I think now it is going to take a family bible entry or some other family inside knowledge to get past this barrier.
