Theus Succumbs To Pneumonia After battling for ten days or more with the disease that was gradually sapping her gentle life away, and that without avail, though she had the very best of care and attention, the body weakened by disease and no longer able to stand the attack, the spirit of Mrs. Thomas Theus gave up the struggle Sunday afternoon at 4 oclock and returned to the God that gave it being. The announcement of the death of Mrs. Theus caused much sorrow among all the friends who had known and loved her since childhood, having been reared in the same community in which she died. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B.M.C. Taunton of Mt. Pisgah community, and was about 35 years of age. She was a faithful member of the Baptist church, her membership being at Mt. Pisgah. She was not only faithful to her church, but just as faithful in believing that it was her duty as a Christian to do the will of her Master at all times. She was always ready to lend a helping hand in time of need both in acts of kindness and in words. At the last, while surrounded with mother, father, husband, children, sisters and brothers, being unable to speak, she opened her eyes and with a pleasant smile on her face gave them all farewell. Truly she could say O death, where is thy sting; O Grave, where is thy victory? The remains of Mrs. Theus were interred at Mt. Pisgah cemetery Monday afternoon, the funeral services being conducted by Rev. John Locke, her life-long friend and neighbor. Besides other sorrowing relatives Mrs. Theus is survived by a devoted husband and seven children, all of whom have the sympathy of a large circle of friends in the loss of this good woman and Christian. Bartlett and took away their loving son, Robert. He had been ill only a few days with pneumonia following influenza. Thus as the budded rose would unfold into the beauty and fragrance of a full developed flower lending brightness and gladness to this world, so it was with Robert sixteen years of age just as his life was unfolding into strength and glory of young manhood, thereby adding joy to the family circle and happiness and sunshine to his many loved ones. Robert was the light and blessing of his home and scattered a ray of sunshine everywhere he went, dispersing the gloom of everyone he met, and always looking on the bright side of life. Oh, God, how hard it is! But we yield with a trusting heart, Father. Though the thorn that pierces our hearts to the depths, there blooms the fragrant flower of Christian comfort, and thru our tears, falling thick and fast, there beams the sweet splendor from that star of Heavenly Hope which lighted his way through the last hours of suffering and death to his glorious home of the soul. He leaves a mother and father, three brothers, two sisters and a large number of relatives and friends to mourn their loss. The funeral service was conducted at the family residence in Butler, interment taking place in Bethel cemetery. Bickley, was born September 14, 1884, and went to rest July 30, 1918, being thirty-three years of age. It was so hard to give our precious brother up, but God knows best. Oh, how he is missed in our home, and so hard to think that all of us will never be able to gather again at his fathers old home on this earth. He was a faithful husband, a true son, a precious brother and kind and good to his friends. Paul bore his sickness without a murmur and told us that it was all for the best. He had never united with any church but we feel that he has gone home with mama and with Gods help, we expect to try to meet them where tears and sorrow are no more. May Gods richest blessings rest on his precious baby boy and make him a joy and comfort to his heart-broken mother. Jeff Riley, a very prominent citizen of the county, socially, politically and financially. She was also a sister of Judge Homer Riley, late of this county. At the age of sixteen, Mrs. Heath joined the Antioch Baptist church and of which she remained a faithful member until the time of her death. Her husband, Mr. Micager Heath, preceded her departure years ago, leaving Mrs. Heath with three daughters, Miss Carrie, who was afterwards happily married to Mr. F.E. Cosey; Miss Lila, who became the bride and affectionate wife of Mr. Oliver Bazemore; and Miss Hattie, the wife of Mr. W.E. Bazemore, and who alone is left of the happy family circle to mourn her mothers death. Mrs. Heaths life was one in which sorrow and sadness were much commingled with the sunlight of peace and happiness. Years ago the horizon of her life was over-spread with dark clouds of sorrow caused by the death of her only son, then about four years of age, and to her the sun never shone brightly again, neither did the beauty and glory of this earth have for her any charms, and thus she passed away in physical darkness, but not spiritual; for the life which she had given to God through Christ, was by His power, kept unto eternal life. The remains of Mrs. Heath were interred in the Antioch cemetery Monday, the 9th of December, the funeral services were conducted by Rev. J.T. Adams, witnessed by a large concourse of sympathizing relatives and friends. Card of Thanks Words are inadequate to express how much I appreciate the kindness, sympathy and help that was given me by the good people of Butler, after the death of my mother, Mrs. S.A. Heath. Especially do I thank Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Bazemore for their kindness. May Gods richest blessings ever rest with each and every one of them. Mrs. W.E. Adams where he was a boarder. Mr. Searcy had been superintending the farming interests of Mrs. Adams this year and made her home his home, where he had the kindest and best treatment at all times, both during illness and while in good health. Mr. Searcys health had not been the best for several years, and some months ago submitted to an operation. Notwithstanding this his health continue to fail and for several weeks had been confined to his bed. His continued illness caused him great despondency, and while brooding over his illness took his life. Mr. Searcy was regarded by all who knew him as one of the countys most cleverest, most energetic and the best young men, and that he should have chosen this means of ending his troubles has greatly saddened hundreds of warm friends. Mr. Searcy was 38 years old, the son of Mr. H.M. Searcy, one of the best citizens of the county, who has the sincere sympathy of his many friends in his deep sorrow. Besides the aged and esteemed father, the deceased is survived by two brothers, Messrs. C.L. and John Searcy both of this county. Mrs. Montgomery had been critically ill for several days, and for a while there was strong hope of her recovery as she bravely and continuously battled for her life, but notwithstanding the best medical aid obtainable, the constant attendance of a skilled trained nurse and the loving solicitude of a devoted husband and anxious friends and relatives, the body which had been preyed upon for the past several days at last yielded to the stern messenger of death. Mrs. Montgomery was, not only a woman of prepossessing appearance, but was the embodiment of those noble traits of character and sweetness of disposition and Christian fidelity which won for her a place in the church, in the neighborhood and the home circle which becomes an irreparable loss. She was not only a member of the Methodist church, but a devoted follower of her risen Lord and daily exemplified in her life the saving principles of the gospel of the Son of God. In the dual relationship of mother and stepmother and that of wife, she was loving, true and devoted and ever responsive in love and loyalty to the brokenhearted husband whose heart is bleeding at every pore. Besides her husband, she leaves a son, by former marriage and a number of relatives and friends to mourn the loss of this pure Christian wife, mother and friend. Her remains were interred in the cemetery near Pine Level church last Monday, Rev. M.T. Gaultney officiating. While his sense of speech and hearing had been seriously deficient all of his life, it was but remarkably how he bore his affliction and was never heard to murmur or complain, but was ever cheerful and happy, always seeking an opportunity to perform a service or an act of kindness for some one. Josh was a true friend to everybody and to know him was to love him. With devotion and tenderness lavished upon him by his family and friends, he gave love and smiles in return, and no one claimed more friends than did this noble young man whose death we all mourn. Foy Answers the Last Summons Mrs. W.L. Foy, one of the best known and most beloved women of Butler, after an illness of only a few days with pneumonia and complication, entered upon her eternal reward about 9 oclock Saturday morning last. Mrs. Foys maiden name was Lizzie Gostin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G.M. Gostin, who during their lifetime were among the most prominent residents of Talbot County. She was born in Talbot County July 15, 1858 and was married to Mr. Leonard Foy of this county in April 1905. They became citizens of Butler shortly thereafter and in a short time she greatly endeared herself to all our people. In the relationship of life as wife, foster mother, sister, relative and neighbor Mrs. Foys influence for good was very pronounced, and in the community she held an important place in the hearts of the people; and to her family she leaves the rich heritage of a well spent life. Quiet and unassuming it was about her own fireside the benediction of her gentle life was most deeply felt and appreciated. She was a life-long member of the Methodist church and pastor, faithful in attendance on its ordinances when her health permitted. Mrs. Foy fully realized that all the tender care of her loved ones and the skill of her physician was being done for her for which she was very appreciative but which proved of no avail and she calmly and with rare patience faced the end. Besides father and mother four brothers who were men of prominence and greatly esteemed have preceded Mrs. Foy to the pearly gate, namely; Messrs. G.P. Gostin, E.M. Gostin, E.J. Gostin and J.M. Gostin. There now remaining only one member of this large and influential family, this being Mr. W.T. Gostin, of Reynolds. Since the death of her brother Dr. J.M. Gostin and his wife, Mrs. Foy has had the care and rearing of their only child, Miss Myrtice Gostin, and to her Mrs. Foy has been all that a mother could have been, and she will be one, as well as the deceased devoted husband, to mourn her death the most. The funeral was held at the home Sunday afternoon at 1:30 oclock, the funeral services being conducted by her pastor, Rev. L.A. Harrell, assisted by Rev. J.T. Adams and was attended by a large gathering of friends. Those at a distance in attendance were: Mr. and Mrs. W.T. Gostin, of Reynolds; Mrs. Maurine Gostin Ricker and Lamar Gostin, of Macon. The love of friends was expressed in the many floral offerings and the long procession following the remains to the grave in the Baptist cemetery. Card of Thanks Through the columns of the Herald we wish to express how much we appreciate the kindness, sympathy and held given us by our friends and neighbors also Dr. Fickling during the illness and death of our dear wife and aunt. All rights reserved. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/copyright.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/gafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Carla Miles http://www.rootsweb.com/~archreg/vols/00010.html#0002476 September 11, 2005, 4:11 pm The Butler Herald January 30, 1919 The Butler Herald Thursday, January 30, 1919 Page One Butler Negro Missing; Reward $25 Offered Thought to Have Fallen in Stream in Muscogee County and Drowned The mysterious disappearance of Tom Fowler, a well-known colored man formerly of Butler, and whose family still resides there, has been the occasion of considerable interest among his many friends, both white and colored. Fowler disappeared more than a month ago and although a reward has been offered for information relative to his whereabouts, he has not yet been located. The following account of his disappearance is clipped from a Columbus paper of January 3rd: Tom H. Fowler, an old darkey who has been residing on the place of the E.L. Stanley Co., wholesale dealers in produce, for the past nine years, disappeared on the morning of December 21 and has not been since. A reward of $25.00 has been offered for his body dead or alive, by the above named firm. Fowler left his home on the morning of December 21st, supposedly to go to a store a little distance away, and when he failed to return, search was at once made for him, but up to this time no trace has been found. Schulster branch, which in ordinary times is a very small stream, was swollen at this time being out of the banks, and in fact, a raging torrent, it is thought that the old darkey might possibly have fallen in the stream and drowned. No other explantation can be given for his continued absence, as he is reported to have been in good health, and that his mind was perfectly clear, and he carried no money on his person that would have made him subject to an attack. The old darkey was near 60 years of age, and white residents of the city give him the name of being one the most reliable darkeys in the city. It is hoped that some trace of him will be discovered in the next few days.
