We left France on the S.S. Huntington on the 4th, were in a dreadful storm which lasted 24 hours, we gave up all hopes of ever landing during the storm they had to shut down the engines and drift around any way the wind carried us. The waves would go clear over the ship. The wind blew the bathhouse off the deck. You can imagine how we felt. Well Mama, no one knows but the boys who went over there what we went through. I will tell you lots when I see you. Many a time we were hungry and couldnt get one bite of bread. We had only two meals each day while we were aboard the ship, beef stew and beans for breakfast, it half cooked, then we had to sit out on deck to eat it. But believe me we were fed good when we reached N.J. the Red Cross girls met us with coffee, buns with jelly, chocolate, cigarettes and gum, just all we wanted, they shall never be forgotten by us. We were met by the Mayors Committee of Welcome way out in the harbor, they pulled their barge up by the transport and the band played Smiles while we were cheered, the girls threw kisses, flowers, fruit and chocolates to us. Then we pulled up past the Statue of Liberty the scene was so pathetic it brought tears of happiness to my eyes. It really seemed that we were entering Heaven. While we boys were passing the Statue of Liberty some shouted to Hell with a man who wouldnt die for you. I am so fatigued will have to close for this time. I cant say just how long I will be at Camp Dix, two or three days or possibly two weeks, but I hope to be home soon so if I slip in on you sometime dont get excited. But I will telephone you from Atlanta if I have time. With best love and kisses for you. Her health failed several years ago since which time she has been a very patient sufferer. She joined the Methodist church in early life and was true to the faith and lived a true Christian life ever afterward. To say we loved her only mildly expresses our feelings toward her. We had been very closely associated together for the past ten years as mother and daughter and for several years had been very companionable and our love was bound with the tie of Christianlove, how I miss her no one knows. She has gone from us forever but her memory lingers still, so farewell dear Katie until we meet at Jesus feet. McDaniel Victim To Unusual Accident At His Home Near Reynolds Saturday Mr. Fred B. McDaniel, 40 years of age and prominently connected, was mortally wounded Saturday morning about 8 oclock, the sad occurrence being one of the most unusual cases ever recorded in this section. Mr. McDaniel had just returned to his house from a nearby field where he had been shooting birds and met Mrs. McDaniel, who was returning from a visit to the stores, in the yard. Both paused for a short conversation and while there engaged their youngest child, a boy of about three years ran up to greet the parents. The childs hand accidentally touched the trigger of the gun, the muzzle of which was turned towards the father. Instantly the gun discharged its contents entering Mr. McDaniels body a few inches under the right arm producing a most ghastly wound. The shot, wadding, particles of clothing and three shattered ribs were embedded in the wounded mans left shoulder, while one lung was penetrated. All three physicians of Reynolds were summoned and rendered the best medical attention possible, but this proved of no avail and after hours of great suffering Mr. McDaniel passed away Sunday night about 10 oclock. He is survived by a grief-stricken wife and four small children, who have the tenderest sympathy of their many friends. Two sisters and two brothers also survive the deceased. He was the son of the late P.E. McDaniel of Reynolds. Mr. McDaniel was an enterprising young businessman being engaged in the garage business. The news of his misfortune and untimely death was a severe shock to the whole town in which he resided all of his life and numbered his friends by his acquaintances. He was a member of the Baptist church of Reynolds. The funeral and interment took place at the Reynolds cemetery Monday afternoon attended by a large gathering of sympathizing friends. Wainwright and took from them a charming little daughter, Eunice. She was ill with pneumonia only one week and one day when God saw fit to take her away to a better world above. May we all live a life that on our departure from this world we may meet little Eunice in Heaven where there will be no more parting, but all will be peace and love. She leaves to mourn her death, a heartbroken father and mother, two sisters, Mrs. Ida Carter and Mrs. Claudia Hancock and five brothers, Messrs. Aden, Julius, Jack, Andrew and William, also a dear aunt, Miss Ta(name blurred) Wainwright who was faithful to the last. Eunice had just passed here eleventh birthday and had just begun to love her school work in which she was taking the greatest of interest and it was a very sad occurrence to her teachers and all her little school-mates to learn of her sad death. Eunice was a sweet little girl and her friends were numbered by her acquaintances which were many. We would not say to the loved ones, weep not, because Christ himself wept in the presence of death, but they can go to Him who doeth all things well and find comfort. Adams Autumn and Fair time brings vividly to our minds one who is no longer with us and whose place we find vacant on all sides. On July 16th, 1918 Mr. J.H. Adams put the finishing touches on a life work that stands as his most fitting memorial, and fell asleep. His life had not been long it began November 16, 1869 and yet, life cannot be measured in days and months and years. Deeds, love, service, heart-throbs are the things that measure its length, and in these Mr. Adams had lived long indeed. His county, his community, his church, his school, all remember well his ready services, and with the memory comes the thought of the smile ever there. He became one of the deacons of his church in 1906 and Old Shiloh never had a more consecrated or more faithful worker. Perhaps, too, she had no member so well-loved, alike by old and young. In more ways than one Mr. Adams had built his house by the side of the road. No one was turned away, he was indeed, a friend of man in the broader and noblest sense. He has left with us a family of loved ones. We can ask for them, nothing better than that his sons will grow into his likeness, strong, noble, manly, and that in after years it may be said of the girls, They are an honor to their father. For the wife and mother, we would ask that his spirit be ever with her, and that the arms of his sons soon comfort her as his did in the years that are gone. Such is the case in what seems with us though not with God the premature death of little Reba. This sweet, lovable little girl, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Evans Brown, was permitted to brighten her parents happy home for only five short years. She was sick for about ten days having a very severe case of tonsillitis and contracting influenza before she regained her strength. All that loved ones, physician, and friends could do was of no avail. Her little spirit took its flight Saturday afternoon, November 23, about four oclock. Besides father and mother she leaves three sisters, Mildred, Ludie and Jeanette Brown and a number of other relatives to look forward to that family reunion in the heavenly home into which she has entered. Her remains were tenderly laid to rest in the cemetery here Sunday afternoon, funeral services being conducted by Rev. Fuller, pastor of the Shiloh Primitive Baptist Church. Musselwhite, of Reynolds, was dead. The end came Friday afternoon at 2:20 oclock after much suffering for several days with pneumonia. While her numerous relatives and friends realized the seriousness of her illness it was not expected that she would succumb so early. Her death came as a great shock to the entire community, and the members of the family have the sympathy of all in their hour of sorrow. Her funeral was held at her home Saturday morning at 11 oclock, conducted by Rev. H.O. Fowler, interment of the remains was made at the Reynolds cemetery. The floral offerings were beautiful and were among many other evidences of the esteem in which she was held. Mrs. Musselwhite became a member of the Methodist church in early life and remained a faithful, consistent member thereof until her death. She was abundantly endowed with those feminine characteristics of loyalty, love and devotion that constitute the model wife, mother and Christian, and her whole life was devoted to loving service to her family. She was about 45 years of age. Previous to her marriage Mrs. Musselwhite was Miss Jessie Adams, and the daughter of the late Capt. and Mrs. James A. Adams of Reynolds. In the death of Mr. Montgomery, Mauk and surrounding community has suffered a very heavy loss, as he was, though comparatively a young man, one of the most public-spirited and enterprising citizens and farmers of that portion of the county. Montgomery Truly death loves a shining mark. When the death angel entered the home of Mr. Albert Montgomery, of Mauk, on the 21st inst. and bore the spirit of his sweet companion, Mrs. Daisy Guy Montgomery, to its heavenly home the sad intelligence of the demise cast a shadow of grief over every heart in this section. Having been a resident of the community for several years she was known and loved by both old and young. She possessed a sunny disposition and her inimitable hospitality was graciously dispensed to one and all. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B.H. Guy, formerly of Marion County, but now of Manchester, Ga. and was married to Mr. Albert Montgomery October 22, 1899 and of this union there are two sons, ages 2 and 8 years, who with her beloved husband survive her. Mrs. Montgomery was 38 years of age at the time of her death. She was lovable Christian woman, unassuming, yet making the world better for having lived. Her religion was by example rather than pretext and her influence was felt by all who came in contact with her. She was a sincere, loyal friend, a good neighbor, loving wife and devoted mother. Her home life was unusually happy and her happiest moments were those spent with her family around the fireside. The cause of her death was from pneumonia following an attack of influenza. While she had the very best care from loved ones and physicians she gradually grew worse until, in answer to her prayer, death came to relieve her. Surrounded by her loved ones she quietly fell asleep to wait the resurrection morn. Rev. J.T. Adams conducted the funeral services after which the remains were interred in the cemetery at Pine Level. Many friends and relatives were present to pay their last tribute of love and cover the grave with beautiful floral offerings. Garrett. Mr. Brazewell and his wife were called to the bedside of Mrs. Garrett, an account of whose death appeared in last weeks issue of the Herald. Mr. Brazewell was not well when he came to Mr. Garretts and continued to grow worse, though having the best medical attention, and yielded to the stern messenger of death, November 21st, 1918. Mr. Brazewell was happily married to Miss Etta Belle Garrett December 1st, 1917. He accompanied by his happy bride left immediately for their future home near Sylvester, and now so soon the separation has come. The fond expectations of a long and happy life have been blighted. The one upon whom she leaned and so fondly loved has been taken, and lonely and silently she bears a grief known only to those who have lost a companion. Mr. Brazewell was born in Worth County, March the 18th, 1869 and is survived by his father and mother and other relatives. He was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church, having joined about five years ago. He was a man of pleasing manners and fine appearance, and left his impress for good on those with whom he came in contact. His remains were accompanied to Sylvester by Mr. and Mrs. Jody Brazewell, Mr. Frank Starling and Mr. E.F. Garrett.
