    3. Taylor County GaArchives Obituaries.....Carrington, Walter December 15, 1918 ************************************************ Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/copyright.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/gafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Carla Miles http://www.rootsweb.com/~archreg/vols/00010.html#0002476 September 28, 2005, 10:51 pm The Butler Herald, August 21, 1919 The Butler Herald Thursday, August 21, 1919 Page Five In Memoriam It was in dreary December, when the sweet spirit of our dear brother, Mr. Walter Carrington, took its flight to the world of peace where all are at rest from their labors. He left a place vacant in our home that can never be filled. His voice is ever stilled, the voice we loved so dear and how it breaks our hearts to say dear Walter is dead. We would not, if we could call him back, we had rather trust in Jesus, follow him and some day be reunited with him on the other shore, where there will be no more farewell tears, where all is joy and happiness. Brother was sick only two weeks with the flu and pneumonia. All was done for him that loved ones could do, but none could stay the cold hand of death. He was born March 14, 1897, died December 15, 1918, making his stay on earth 21 years and 9 months. We mourn not as those who have no hope for we feel sure that our loss is his gain. A kinder and more affectionate boy never lived. Always seeking comfort for his dear mother. Oh! brother we miss you since you have gone to that home so peaceful and fair. We hope to meet you in that bright City, where the wicked cease from troubling and the weary are at rest. Walter was laid to rest in LaGrange, Ga. in the presence of a host of friends and relatives. Oh! we miss his smiling face every where and our home is so sad. A precious one from us is gone A voice we loved is stilled A place is vacant in our home Which never can be filled. We go mourning every day, We cannot help but weep; We are so sad and lonely, Since our dear brother feel asleep. Dear brother thou hast left us, Thy loss we deeply feel; But ‘tis God who has bereft us, He can all our sorrows heal. He is gone but not forgotten, Never will his memory fade, No your memory lives on forever, In our hearts, it will never die. Underwood, gathered Wednesday afternoon for a picnic supper and family reunion at Catalpa Park Potterville. These children of Mr. and Mrs. Underwood are as follows: Mr. and Mrs. H.F. Underwood and Mr. and Mrs. U.S. Underwood of Potterville, Mr. and Mrs. Ira Hobbs of Reynolds, Mr. and Mrs. L.L. Wainwright, Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Perkins, of Butler and Mr. and Mrs. C.M. Daniel, of Jacksonville. These were all present except Mr. Daniel. All of the thirty-three grandchildren were present but three. It was a delightful gathering in every way. One of the chief attractions being the splendid supper spread. A long table was literally piled up with ham and chicken, biscuit, sandwiches, salad, pickles, pies and cakes and dozens of other good things to eat. It was a happy throng that gathered about the table just as the sun went down. A number of friends had the pleasure and honor of gathering with these splendid people. Mr. Woodson, school teacher, asked God’s blessing upon the food and entire family. Mr. W.F. Smith superintendent of the mill made an after dinner speech in which he welcomed all such gatherings to the shady trees, cool spring water, swings, bathing pools, etc. Several of the Underwood family with some of their friends had a delightful moonlight auto trip to Miona Springs after supper. We all pronounced the reunion a great success and wish these good people many like occasions in the future. A.R. J.T. Adams. Mrs. Barfield was born February 27, 1878, being forty-one years of age. She was the mother of three daughters, Mrs. Alma Slade, of Hamilton, Mrs. Willie Mae Payne, of McBean, and Martha, eight years of age. She also leaves two sons, Floyd Barfield, of Macon, and Clifford Barfield, of Hamilton. She also leaves two step-daughters, Mrs. Herbert Herring and Mrs. T.N. Bazemore, who, from infancy until her death loved and treated their step-mother, as if she had been their own mother in flesh and blood. Such love and devotion by step-children is worthy of emulation. And when we consider the true and tried traits of character, the gentleness and sweetness of her disposition, her willingness to serve, to do her duty in every walk of life, then it is not strange that these step-daughters as well as her own children loved her while living and mourn, with bleeding hearts, their loss in her death. The large floral offering contributed by friends of Talbotton bear silent attestation of the high regard in which she was held by those who knew her best. Beside those mentioned above she leaves a broken hearted father and mother, to mourn the death, of this their last child. The following from Talbotton and vicinity accompanied the remains to Butler, Mr. A.A. Adams, Mr. and Mrs. E.A. Mitchell, Mr. and Mrs. W. Mitchell, Mr. C.M. Ingram, Mr. Zack Adams and Miss Lucy Adams, Mr. John Clemons and Mr. E. Garrett. J.T.A. Card of Thanks Talbotton, Ga. Aug. 16 We, the father and mother, daughters and sons, of Mrs. Eva Maud Barfield,do desire, and hereby express to our many noble and Christian hearted friends of Talbotton and vicinity for their untiring help and words of heartfelt sympathy during the illness and death of the precious one who has gone from our home. Also to the good people of Butler for their many acts of kindness and hospitable treatment while in their town on the sad mission which called us there. Amos Was Sudden Was Preparing the Morning Meal for Her Family When End Came Friday The death of Mrs. Ola Smith Amos age thirty-two years wife of Mr. George T. Amos, which occurred early Friday morning at her home near Wesley church was a great shock to the community in which she lived. That she passed away suddenly and without struggle was apparent from the fact that she was engaged in preparing breakfast for her family when the end came her lifeless form being found near the stove by her husband. Except for the fact that she complained the night before of slight heart trouble Mrs. Amos was in her usual apparent good health up to the hour of her death. Six years of happy wedded life were those enjoyed by Mr. and Mrs. Amos, and of this union there is one son, 9 months of age to be deprived of a mother’s love. Mrs. Amos was a Miss Smith of Crawford County before her marriage. The grief-stricken husband has the sincere sympathy of his many friends in this time of saddest bereavement. Saturday morning amid the tears of those who loved her, Mrs. Amos was laid to rest in the cemetery at Wesley church where impressive funeral services were conducted by Revs. J.P. Chatfield and L.A. Windham, of Butler, which was received here some days ago, was a surprise to his many friends, but following the interesting announcement hearty good wishes of abundant friends are extended the happy couple. Mr. Windham has been holding a fine position at Macon for a number of months, during which time he met Miss Califf. Friendship of the couple soon ripened into love resulting in their marriage at Brunswick last week, an account of which is contained in the following from the Brunswick paper: “A double marriage replete with romance and which was solemnized Wednesday night has just managed to creep to the surface, so successfully had the contracting parties managed to keep the affair a secret.” “About a week ago, so the story goes, two attractive young Macon ladies left their homes to spend a short time on the seacoast and selected St. Simons Island holding out more attractions than any other. And so to St. Simons they came.” “A few days later two popular young men of Macon concluded to spend several days at the seaside resort and selected St. Simon as being themost attractive – and to St. Simons they journeyed.” “When the boat reached the pier at the island Monday morning Mr. Jesse B. Hodges and Mr. James J. Windham, Jr., of Macon, were happily greeted by Misses Mabel Willis and Glynn M. Califf, also of Macon. “The young couples were seen frequently together, and made many friends among the guests on the island by their genial personalities. It was noticed that the couples were becoming more devoted as the hours went by, but it was thought by interested ones to be only a summer flirtation.” “Without any intimation of what was to be the object of a little trip over to Brunswick, Mr. Hodges and Miss Willis and Mr. Windham and Miss Califf boarded the boat Wednesday noon for this city. In the evening they repaired to the residence of Mr. Lacy McKinnon, where they found Rev. S.J. Cartledge, supply pastor of the First Presbyterian church, and requested that he perform the ceremony for them. The knot was tied in a most pleasing manner by the minister and in a few minutes the happy couples were on their way to catch a boat for their return trip to the island where they will spend their honeymoons. “The only announcement the newlyweds will give out is: No cards, no cake, nobody’s business.” File at: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/taylor/vitals/marriages/califf2243mr.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 3.3 Kb

The couple had been lovers from first acquaintance some months ago when Mr. Keen located here to engage in the barber trade in the employ of Mr. J.H. Harmon was born August 30, 1851 and departed this life April 18, 1919. She was united to Mr. L.M. Harmon, by Rev. Rhodes in Holy Matrimony November 6, 1873 and to their union was only one daughter, Miss Ruhanna Harmon. Mrs. Harmon professed a hope in Christ and united with the Missionary Baptist Church at Mt. Pisgah in early childhood and has been a faithful member since that time but on account of her health and her daughter’s health she has not been able to attend the services for some time. Mrs. Harmon was kind and affectionate wife and mother and accommodating neighbor, ever ready to help in the time of need. Not only her husband and daughter will miss her, but a host of friends who were numbered by her acquaintance will shed a tear over her departure. We will not meet her on this earth again but by the grace of God we hope to meet her in the New Jerusalem. Oh! how we sympathize with her bereaved ones, but would say to them, Bear up and remember, “The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away; blessed be His name.” “Be of good cheer it is I.” May the God of love be with her companion and give him grace to be reconciled to all his dealings with us so when we have run the race set before us we may hear that good and welcome plaudit, “Well done thou good and faithful servant enter thou into the joys of they Lord.” There will be no sad farewell in that happy home where she is dwelling for all is peace and love. Our heart goes out in sympathy to the loved ones, but we feel that we should not grieve for she is resting from all her suffering and troubles. She is happy, so happy resting in the arms of a glorified and risen Savior. She leaves behind her husband and daughter, one brother, Rev. John Locke, and a large host of friends to mourn her loss. Her body was peacefully laid to rest in the Mt. Pisgah cemetery. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. M.T. Gaultney. Written by Mrs. L.D.
