    1. Sept Tracer arrived
    2. Virginia Crilley
    3. My Sept Tracer arrived! The Society is raising money to relocate the General John B. Gordon overseer's house. This is a big project for them! The local people could really use our help. It is hoped that this would bring visitors to Taylor County. The move alone will cost $10,000.00. One of the interesting features in the photo is a dinner bell that is as tall as the house! It is thought this could probably be heard all the way to the Flint River. Featured this month is a continuation of the 59th Regiment and its story during 1863. (More will continue in future months). The Theus family had 7 brothers in Company C of this unit, and there are photos the four of them who died during the war. The rest of the bulletin covers articles from The Butler Heradl, July 1911 - Dec 1911. There is a photo of the Courthouse and also the Dean Hotel & Coffee Shop. Does anyone remember these? Mr. Adams is looking for history of this hotel. Remember to keep passing this along to friends who might want to join and help support the Society. Contact your local Library and see if they will subscribe. Each issue covers so much of the surrounding counties in the write-ups from the newspapers -- so it is definitely not just about Taylor County. Virginia

    3. J. V. Meadows was Judson Vincent Meadows. He was the son of Vincent T. Meadows and Martha King. Emily Meadows Guy married Thomas T. Guy brother of Mary Kathleen Guy second wife of Vincent Meadows. This made Emily's step mother her sister in law also. M. T. Chapman was the son of Judson and Emily's sister Mary Ann Meadows Chapman. Mary Ann Meadows and her husband Martin D. Chapman, and M. T. Chapman and his wife are buried in Butler Memorial Cemetery in Butler, Taylor Co., GA. Emily Meadows Guy and her children are buried in Harmony Cemetery, Ashburn, Turner Co., GA. Emily's husband Thomas T. Guy is buried in Pleasant Hill Freewill Baptist Cemetery, Schley Co., GA. Judson Vincent Meadows is buried in New Hope Cemetery, Bowie Co., TX. I have Emily Guy's CSA Pension Application. M. T. and A. D. Chapman were the witnesses to Prove Marriage and to Whom - and Death Date of Husband. I felt that was "good proof" that my deductions regarding her marriage to her step mother's brother were accurate but this is absolute proof that father and daughter married brother and sister. Thank you Carla. Harriett

The Butler Herald, August 21, 1919 The Butler Herald Thursday, August 21, 1919 Page Four Mrs. Eva Maud Barfield Mrs. Eva Maud Barfield, widow of Pinkey Barfield, and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Garrett, deceased, departed this life at her home near Talbotton August 15th, after an illness of one week from uremic poison, her remains were brought to Butler, on No. 4 Friday night and were interred at Bethlehem cemetery Saturday at noon, the funeral services conducted by Rev. J.T. Adams. Mrs. Barfield was born February 27, 1878, being forty-one years of age. She was the mother of three daughters, Mrs. Alma Slade, of Hamilton, Mrs. Willie Mae Payne, of McBean, and Martha, eight years of age. She also leaves two sons, Floyd Barfield, of Macon, and Clifford Barfield, of Hamilton. She also leaves two step-daughters, Mrs. Herbert Herring and Mrs. T.N. Bazemore, who, from infancy until her death loved and treated their step-mother, as if she had been their own mother in flesh and blood. Such love and devotion by step-children is worthy of emulation. And when we consider the true and tried traits of character, the gentleness and sweetness of her disposition, her willingness to serve, to do her duty in every walk of life, then it is not strange that these step-daughters as well as her own children loved her while living and mourn, with bleeding hearts, their loss in her death. The large floral offering contributed by friends of Talbotton bear silent attestation of the high regard in which she was held by those who knew her best. Beside those mentioned above she leaves a broken hearted father and mother, to mourn the death, of this their last child. The following from Talbotton and vicinity accompanied the remains to Butler, Mr. A.A. Adams, Mr. and Mrs. E.A. Mitchell, Mr. and Mrs. W. Mitchell, Mr. C.M. Ingram, Mr. Zack Adams and Miss Lucy Adams, Mr. John Clemons and Mr. E. Garrett. J.T.A. Card of Thanks Talbotton, Ga. Also to the good people of Butler for their many acts of kindness and hospitable treatment while in their town on the sad mission which called us there. 3. Most of our attention are on very old obits, but it would also be nice to post those in the 1940's, 1950's, onward. If you know of anyone who collects obits for Taylor County residents, and who might not be on the Internet, please let us know, and maybe we can work with them to get what they have on-line. Most of us spend our time looking "way back" into history, but the history we've lived through also needs to be preserved. Virginia

    3. The Lebanon Baptist Church is located on 19 south of Butler just after you cross Ramulette Creek and Whitewater Creek junction. Does anyone know any more about the history of the church? Does it have a cemetery? It should have celebrated a 100 year anniversary a little while ago. Wondered if they put out a historical brochure? The Lebanon Baptist Church was constituted on Thursday before the fourth Sunday in November 1903. According to "Taylor County Turns Back the Clock" members of the Presbytery to constitute the Lebanon Baptist Church were M.T. Gaultney, John Locke, J.T. Wade and J.M. Bray. M. T. Gaultney was elected as moderator and J. M. Bray as secretary. The charter members were J.R. Harris, J. T. Blakely, John Bryant, Isaac Eubanks, Mrs. Leana Harris, Miss Pearl Harris and Mrs. M. L. Blakely. Everyone agreed to name the church Lebanon Baptist Church. J. T. Blakely was the first deacon elected January 9, 1904.

All possible that medical skill and trained nursing could do was done to save the life of this devoted wife and tender mother but to no avail. Death came, and the sweet spirit went home to God, leaving seven motherless children and a heart crushed husband to mourn their irreparable loss. The permissible dispensation of God’s providence are not now understood. “We now see through a glass darkly, but then face to face, and we shall know, even as we are known.” Then and not until then will we know and understand why God in His mercy and infinite wisdom permitted this loving, devoted mother and faithful, loyal wife to be taken away from the home she loved so well. Cook Dies At Macon Sanitarium Not only the town of Reynolds, where she lived, but that of Butler, and in fact the entire county were enshrouded in gloom on account of the death of Mrs. Lettie Ricks Cook, the wife of Mr. E.W. Cook of Reynolds, which occurred at the Williams sanitarium at Macon last Sunday, after an illness of three weeks of typhoid fever. She was taken ill at her home at Reynolds of typhoid fever, and her condition became such that an operation was deemed indispensable. She was carried to the Williams sanitarium last Wednesday, an operation was performed Friday following, death resulting last Sunday. Her remains were brought to Reynolds Monday morning and were laid to rest in the Reynolds cemetery Monday afternoon, the funeral service was conducted by her pastor, Rev. J.H. Allen, assisted by Rev. H.O. Fowler, pastor of the Reynolds Baptist church. Mrs. Cook was 40 years old, and in that length of time but few people have endeared and so sweetly enshrined themselves in the hearts and lives of the citizenship of Reynolds, as this noble Christian woman. She was not merely a member of the Methodist church of Reynolds, but one of its most active workers in every department of Woman’s Christian endeavor. In her social life, she was a recognized leader in those functions, which had for their aim the betterment and uplift of the young people. But it was in the sacred precincts of her home that her Christian graces and womanly virtues were more deeply and sweetly felt. It was there that the light of her life shone with brightest splendor. It was there that she reflected with radiant beauty, the light of her risen Lord. She is survived by her husband, Mr. E.W. Cook, her mother, Mrs. Sarah Rick, two sons, E.B. and L.W. Cook and two brothers, Hons. W.T. and F.A. Ricks, all of Reynolds. So, as to age, service as a soldier in the Civil War as a man long identified with the cause of Christ, and citizenship in this county, he may well be considered as one of the county’s landmarks. Mr. Garrett held up well, physically, he bore the weight of years with strength and vigor and up until his last illness, which gradually sapped his remaining vitality and freed the spirit which took its flight to God who gave it. Mr. Garrett was an upright, honorable man who believed in treating his fellow man with that courtesy, which he himself, under like circumstances would like to be treated. And would not knowingly do his neighbor injury. He was the last one of the older Garrett family, but leaves a large number of Garrett relatives, who are among the most prominent citizens of Taylor County. Of his immediate family there is only one son, Mr. John Garrett and his widow by his third marriage to mourn his departure. His remains were interred in the Bethel cemetery, last Saturday morning, the funeral service conducted by Rev. J.T. Adams.
