Jesse Cook was hanged on Sept. 17, his body was turned over to his friends, who put it on the night train for Box Springs. The Negroes at Butler assert that the body was warm and perspiring when so turned over, and that Cook’s friends have carefully nursed him back to life. There are white people who join in this belief. Messrs. J.R. and Bill Acree are sawing right on. Mr. Bud Watson and family, of Rupert, spent Saturday night and Sunday with T.V. Simmons and family. Mrs. Ceily Barfield spent Monday with Mrs. F.M. Weeks. Mr. Bunk Barfield, we are glad to state is up and out again after four weeks’ sickness with pneumonia. We regret to state Mrs. Jones is no better. Mr. Lester Kirksey and Miss Lena McCarter spent Sunday with Lena’s sister, Mrs. Ada Mayo. Mr. Charlie Simmons started down the sticks Sunday, but the widow turned him back. Mrs. Kate Barfield spent Monday with Mrs. Van Shehee. Mrs. Carrie Barfield spent Wednesday afternoon with Mrs. F.M. Weeks. Mr. Acree, from Up North, is visiting his sons, Messrs. Jim and Bill Acree, near Southland. Our school at Southland is getting low in number, we only have 30 pupils. Some are sick and some have stopped to work. Miss Pearl Simmons, of Rupert, spent Sunday with home folks here. Miss Mary L. Barfield spent Tuesday afternoon with Miss Ruth Weeks. Misses Ruth Weeks and Mary Lizzie Barfield spent Monday with Mrs. Van Shehee. Mrs. Owen Barfield has been quite sick with grippe, is improving at this writing. Mr. Bennie Simmons has been sick for several days. Mr. Bud Watson and family, of Rupert, spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. T.V. Simmons. Mr. F.M. Weeks is on the sick list this week. The farmers are busy hauling guano from Ideal. Mr. F.M. Weeks was in bed and had his little boys hauling guano. They went after a load Saturday evening and nobody was there to help them put it on; before they’d go back without it, the little boys put it on themselves. It surprised everybody, but people don’t know what children can do until they see it. The little boys ages are 9 and 11 years. Mr. and Mrs. Tap Davis has moved to Potterville. We regret to lose such good citizens. The infant child of Mr. F.M. Weeks is quite ill. Preaching at Bethel every 1st Sunday. Mrs. Kate Barfield spent Monday with her cousins, Miss Berta Barfield and Mrs. Loula Wadkins, at Gardenvalley. Miss Ida Barfield is visiting her sister, Mrs. Sallie Davis, in Potterville, this week. Mrs. S.O. Powell, of Corinth, is visiting relatives at Flem. Southland boosts of a good school, school will close April 10th. There will be a school picnic on Friday, April 10th, and a concert Friday night at Rupert. Everybody invited. The boys are requested to leave their booze at home. A crowd went down on Whitewater fishing one evening last week. There are 17 families of Barfields on the Butler mail route No. 1. We can’t say how many Barfields live around Ideal and Southland. Mr. M.J. Barfield went down on the little branch side of the new railroad and gigged 26 fish Saturday evening with a pitch fork. Some men are whispering about putting a cotton factory at Whitewater; they came down last week and looked around. F.M. Weeks and Thomas Simmons were in Flem Sunday. The freight train on the A.B. & A. railroad was wrecked Saturday afternoon between Ideal and Southland, but no one was hurt. One car was thrown off but the wrecker soon came down and replaced it. Miss Ruth Weeks returned home Thursday, after a pleasant ten days’ visit with relatives at Flem. So they have a new postmaster at Flem. Mr. Heard Davis has taken charge. F.M. Weeks was down in Marion sometime last week. Mr. Ben Simmons made a flying trip to Flem Sunday. Surely there is some attraction up there. Miss Mary Lizzie Barfield left June 12 for Columbus, where she will spend a few weeks with her cousin, John Harris. Misses Pearl Simmons and Alla Barfield spent Sunday most pleasantly with Misses Ruth and Dora Weeks. Mr. Hama Davis has gone to Ft. Valley to pack peaches. Mr. T.V. The Marion County Patriot, No. 26 Friday, July 10, 1908 Page Six Southland Butler, Ga., R.F.D., July 6 – Mrs. Van Sheehee is on the sick list this week. News reached us last week of the death of Rev. J.M. King, one of Taylor county’s prominent citizens. He had been plowing and at noon took out his mule, forgetting to untie the hamstring. On the way home the mule threw him, but his feet became tangled in the gear, the mule running away. Mrs. King succeeded in stopping the mule, but Mr. King was already unconscious and died five minutes late in his wife’s arms. Mr. King left here for the wiregrass about eighteen months ago. School opened at Southland Monday, with Miss Lizzie Regan as teacher. (Too late for last publication) Messrs. S.H. Ennis and George Gooding, of Marion County, spent last Thursday night and Friday at the home of Mr. F.M. Weeks. They had a time finding the way. One said “let’s go back.” They rode all around the house then our nearest neighbor showed them the house. Mrs. Mary Rabon died last Thursday a.m. and was buried Friday at 3 p.m. in the Little Bethel Cemetery. Messrs. T.V. Simmons, F.M. Weeks and Good Tauntin went fox hunting last Friday before day and caught a big old fox. Mr. Weeks saved one ear and sent to his uncle, A.B. Weeks, at Morgan, Ga. Mrs. Jim Acree, of near Acree’s Saw Mill, spent Wednesday p.m. with Mrs. Mary Weeks. Mr. Bud Cromer, of Bethel, was talking to Miss Dora Weeks Sunday afternoon and he helped her cook supper Sunday night. Dora says Bud made the best biscuits she ever ate. No, we haven’t quit, we’ve been in the cotton patch, and now we are through and back home. Mrs. Mary Weeks raised the prize head of cabbage this year; it weighed fifteen pounds. Miss Della Watson, of near Pleasant Hill, visited her cousins, Misses Ruth and Dora Weeks, last Saturday and Sunday. An ice cream supper given at Mr. Bill Sanders’ near Ideal last week was quite a success. The house was full and everyone enjoyed themselves, except one old boy who didn’t get to dance. Messrs. Claude and Tete Watson, of Rupert, visited friends here recently. A crowd of our young people attended an all day singing at Potterville the second Sunday. A Negro man was shot and killed on his way home from camp meeting by another Negro last Sunday. Mr. Bob Gilbert arrested the Negro who done the shooting in Ideal Sunday afternoon, and he was taken to Oglethorpe and placed in jail Monday. Mr. Bill Brasel, of Columbus, an old Taylor County boy, will be married to Miss Hattie Lovick, of Bibb City, the second Sunday. Rev. John Jones will fill the pulpit at Southland the coming year. Preaching every first Sunday. Everyone cordially invited. A Putnam girl invited two of our boys to a barbecue at Ellaville recently. Mr. Bunk Barfield attended and reports the warmest time of his life. It appears as if Viola was afraid to introduce Bunk to the other girls. Misses Ruth and Dora Weeks spent last Sunday afternoon most pleasantly with Misses Lena and Nora McCarter, of Ideal. Born to Mr. and Mrs. Cromer, a fine girl. Messrs. Mrs. Bell Cromer, of Bethel, is able to be out again after a week’s sickness. Talk about your widows, boys, but Mr. Ben Simmons has a fine looking one near Richland. His mother says he will have to get a large mail box. Plow boy, can’t you furnish Ben a box, say something about 20x60? Mr. Hama Davis is about to weep himself to death, because his Richland girl has married. Hama says he hated to see Effie turn to a Hogg. Watch out, Hama, another young lady will soon become Mrs. Hogg. Hama says there’s going to be more Hoggs than he and his great grandfather’s pa can count. Mrs. Wm. Weeks is suffering with sore eyes. We regret to say Miss Carrie Barfield is on the sick list. Mrs. Elizabeth Barfield left for Union City Saturday where she will spend a few weeks with her daughter, Mrs. Olia Stringfellow. Messrs. Charlie and Bennie Simmons called on our teacher, Miss Mary Elizabeth Blackman Sunday. Miss Mary L. Blackmon spent last Saturday night with homefolks at Reynolds. The infant of Mr. and Mrs. John Cromer, of Bethel, died last Sunday a week ago and was laid to rest in Bethel Cemetery on Monday. Miss Suzie McCarty of Ideal quietly passed away at her home last Wednesday, was two weeks, and was buried at Grangerville on Thursday. She leaves two brothers and two sisters to mourn her loss and besides a host of friends. She was 45 years old. Mrs. Ada Mayo quietly passed away last Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 3:30 a.m. She was the sixth child and fifth daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Griffin McCarty. After calling every friend and relative in the house to her bedside, bid them goodbye and quietly passed away. Mrs. Mayo was twenty-one years old, and was married to Mr. Luther Mayo two years ago, and was taken with consumption about three months after her marriage. She first moved to Junction City, and afterwards to Ideal, where she moved back to her father and mother and died. She did not give up until the last day. She was a faithful pupil in school days, a faithful daughter at home, and was a faithful and loving wife, and lived a true Christian life. She joined the Free Will Baptist Church at Bethel five years ago. She was laid to rest in Bethel cemetery last Thursday at 12 o’clock. Rev. W.H. Amerson preached her funeral. She leaves a husband, five sisters, three brothers, father and mother and a host of friends to mourn her loss. She has gone to join her sister, Mrs. Jeffie Barfield, who died with consumption seven years ago. We sympathize with her bereaved relatives and friends. Mrs. Mary Rogers visited our school Friday evening and reports a good school with a good teacher. Messrs. Hama Davis, Bennie and Charlie Simmons were in Ideal Saturday. We regret to say that Miss Lena McCarty is suffering with four large risings on her face. Little Miss Berta Jones, of Wedeal, spent Saturday night with her brother, Mr. Monroe Jones, at Bethel. Mr. Enoch Barfield lost a fine mule Saturday night. It died with blind staggers. Mesdames Mat and Carrie Barfield visited at the home of F.M. Weeks on Sunday. Mr. F.M. Weeks is still making preparations to fox hunt, as he recently had Mr. Council, of Americus, to ship him a dog. We regret to say Mrs. Beady Barfield is on the sick list. Mrs. Ceily Barfield celebrated her 84th birthday the 12th of March and Aunt Ceily can now beat any of the young folks around cutting the pigeon wing. Mr. Owen Barfield, cousin to Mrs. Ceily, who was born in North Carolina, celebrated his 85th birthday the 24th of March. Ha! Ha! Mr. Bennie Simmons called on his best girl last Saturday night and him and his girl were sitting in the window talking. Bennie was so interested in the subject they were talking on, and an old ox ate the whole back of Ben’s coat off. Ben attended the singing Sunday, though he wore his father’s coat. We are glad to welcome our new neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. John Rabwin. Recently a certain one of our girls slighted Mr. Hama Davis and two days afterwards she received a message thus: “Miss Lizzie the slight didn’t embarrass this old boy.” Say Miss Lizzie, who do you reckon will ever carry you to another party? Adams Truly death loves a shining mark! On April 7, 1919, the Death Angel visited our home and took from us our dear wife and mother, Mrs. E.A. Adams. Oh, how hard it is to give her up, how sad and vacant seems the house without mama there. But God says: “Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God,” and He had a better place for her where there is no death or sorrow. We cannot see dear mama on earth again, but by the grace of God we can meet her in a world above where there is joy, peace and love. She was a kind and loving wife, a devoted mother, a good friend and neighbor. None knew her but to love her. The cause of her death was heart trouble from which she had suffered several years. She was near 72 years of age at the time of her death. It is so sad to know we have said goodbye to mama for the last time on earth. But weep not, dear papa, brothers and sisters, for God says, “Thy will be one,” and we must try to be reconciled to His will. Dark this world and dreary Since that well remembered day When they took our blessed mother From her earthly home away. And they bore her to the hill tops, Gently laid her in her tomb Where the green trees were above her And the flowers sweetly bloom.
