Mr. D.R. Bigbee Died Sunday Morning The death angel has visited out town and community a number of times in the past few months and removed from us some of our most prominent and useful citizens and many a heart has been left crushed and bleeding; but no death that has occurred has been more universally mourned than that of Mr. Donnie Ross Bigbee which took place at his home Sunday morning last at 10 oclock, following an illness of several months, though confined to his bed from his last attack only about ten days. Mr. Bigbee was a native of Clay County, Ga., having been born there October 15, 1885 and came to Butler in 1903 as an employee of the Central of Georgia Railroad as depot agent, which position he held almost continuously from then until the time of his death. On July 23, 1905 he became happily married to Miss Eva Chapman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.D. Chapman, and oneof Butlers choicest young women. As a result of this union three children survive the deceased, D.R. Bigbee, Jr., Misses Nettie and Alberta Bigbee. The passing of Mr. Bigbee is mourned by all who knew him and appreciate his high character, splendid attainments and genuine worth. He was a man of generous impulses, frank in manners, jovial and friendly. He made friends easily and held them. In matters of education, civic affairs, as a Mason and in problems of constructive welfare, he was always found with his shoulder to the wheel. He was a member of Fickling Lodge 129F and A.M. and had filled many important stations in the order. One year ago he was honored by the fraternity by being elected Worshipful Master, but declined acceptance of the office on account of his close confinement to the duties which he assumed with the railroad and failing health. Mr. Bigbee was a Mason at heart. The tenets and principles of that ancient and honorable order were very near and dear to him and brotherly love, relief and truth shone out most beautifully in his every day life. In his last illness these same virtues possessed by other Masons were abundantly bestowed upon him. May his brethren, who sincerely mourn his demise, strive to emulate his noble deeds and be prepared, when the summons comes to them to join their brother and others who have gone before, on that Celestial shore to share the joys of life eternal, and receive that White Star with a new name that shall insure perpetual and unspeakable happiness at His right hand. By officials of the railroad Mr. Bigbee was held in high esteem which was often shown by financial assistance during his illness and beautiful floral offerings that made up one of the largest collections from friends seen here in years. The funeral services were conducted from the home Monday afternoon by Revs. J.T. Adams and H.O. Hughes, followed by the usual Masonic ceremonies. Mrs. D.R. Bigbee and Family Thanks Friends The family of Mr. D.R. Bigbee wishes through the columns of the Herald to extend grateful thanks to the many loyal friends, faithful physicians and Miss Johnston, the professional nurse, for their many acts of kindness and most splendid services rendered them in the recent illness of Mr. Bigbee who has been called to rest. Taylor County GaArchives News.....A Narrow Escape for Mrs. Willis Hobbs May 22, 1903 ************************************************ Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/copyright.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/gafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Carla Miles http://www.rootsweb.com/~archreg/vols/00010.html#0002476 October 5, 2005, 10:58 pm The Marion County Patriot May 22, 1903 The Marion County Patriot, No. 21 May 22, 1903 Page One A Narrow Escape The presence of mind and prompt action on the part of Mr. Eugene Harvey prevented last Tuesday what probably would have been a serious, possibly a fatal runaway. Mrs. Willis Hobbs of Taylor County, was in a buggy with a small boy when, the mule she was driving took fright and began to run down the street. As the mule turned the corner of Mr. McCrarys store Mr. Harvey ran out, and at considerable risk to himself, succeeded in catching the bit and stopping the mule. Had it not been for the prompt and courageous act of Mr. Harvey it is very probable that both Mrs. Hobbs and her baby would have been seriously hurt.
