A recent listing of CSA soldiers in the Taliaferro Co. GenWeb Archives, by Terri Saturday, states that Absalom G. Evans married Mary E. Rhodes, daughter of Absalom and Martha Chapman Rhodes. That is incorrect. Mary E. Rhodes, wife of Absalom G. Evans, was daughter of Asa Rhodes and his first wife Jane Woodall. The proof is in the following. Taliaferro Co., GA Marriage Bk. A.: Absalom Evans m. Mary Rhodes, Oct. 17, 1850. Mary E. Rhodes, daughter of Absalom and Martha (Chapman) Rhodes was only 4 years old in the 1850 census, so could not have married Absalom Evans in that same year. There is good proof that Mary E. Rhodes, daughter of Absalom and Martha (Chapman) Rhodes, married William J. Norton. Taliaferro Co., GA Marriage Bk. A.: Miss M. E. Rhodes to William J. Norton Nov. 13, 1865. This age is consistent with the ages given for the wife of Absalom G. Evans in later census records. I have not found Absalom & Mary Evans in 1860, but in 1870, Absalom G. Evans is listed as age 36 and Mary E. as age 35. In 1880, A.G.
