I am 'sideways' kin to this family. Robert Simms Burch married Martha Speer REID who was a sister to my ancestor, Sarah Williams Reid. Martha and Sallie were daughters of James and Rebecca (Duke) Reid. My Sallie married James Kennon COTTEN, son of George COTTEN and his second wife, Rebecca Pennington, of Warren County. Robert Simms and Martha Reid Burch eventually settled in Coweta County where I now live and, as a lookup volunteer for Coweta, I could probably help find info on Robert S. and Martha Reid Burch. I do know that the local history book has a picture of them in it which I could scan and send. I'd be glad to correspond with anyone researching, even collaterally, the Reid or Cotten lines. Any way to tell if this gentleman practiced with Stephens? Jason ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Jenny Cummins <jennycummins@gmail.com> Date: Jan 9, 2006 6:41 PM Subject: robert simms burch To: fergusonjason@gmail.com Dear Jason, I am taking a year long genealogy course at the University of Washington here in Seattle an am researching my great-great grandfather, Robert Simms BURCH, as well as his daughter, Isora Burch HARDAWAY. In the 1840 census, Robert S. Burch is listed as living in District 601, Taliaferro County, GA. Family lore has it that he studied law with Alexander Stephens in Crawfordville, GA before the war. My great grandmother was born in 1844, perhaps in Crawfordville, GA as well. I would be very grateful if you could point me in any direction to see if I could find out the truth of the family lore or to find out where my g-grandmother was born. To those interested in Robert Burch: In his book titled ALEXANDER H. STEPHENS OF GEORGIA, which I highly recommend to all who have Taliaferro county roots, Thomas E. Schott makes the following two references to Robert Burch: "It (Stephens' reputation) was secure enough by 1841 for him to forego running for reelection. His law business demanded much of his time, and even the partner he had taken on in 1839, Robert Burch, failed to relieve the burden. But Stephens was prospering." (p. 44) In writing about Gov. Joseph E. Brown of Georgia, Schott says: "Opinions on the man varied greatly, and Stephens received them from both ends of the spectrum. From Linton came glowing reports of Brown's speaking abilities and fine personal character. Bob Burch, Stephens' old law partner, knew Brown better. He could not vote for him, he told Stephens. Not only did Brown lack "open candor and untarnished character for fairness in the transactions of this life (including POLITICS)," but he was also "a complete demagogue." (p. 234) The citation here is to letters from Burch to Stephens in STEPHENS PAPERS. I hope this sheds some light on their relations for you. Rem B.
