    3. Lee Nelson, who is doing extensive work on the area of Taliaferro (southwest corner) where it joins Greene and Hancock (White Plains), has shared his method of locating neighboring land owners. Please, if you have some other experiences and helpful tips, share with all of us. Wouldn't it be great to put together a "grouping" of families? That wold really help reseachers -- and especially those just getting started. One question: Where is the best place to locate the Headright Grant? Is this just at the Archives in Atlanta --- or can it be found in some of the County Deed books? Is it on Microfilm? Tips for understanding Land Research in Headright Counties In the area covered by the Headright Grants (which includes Taliaferro)... 1) For immediate neighbors (those owning adjoining lands) Deed Records and Tax Lists usually do the trick. If the time is early enough, the Headright Grant and especially the plat can be very informative. 2)For a more general look, I usually use Tax Lists and a "layered" approach. What I do is go through the target Militia Dist. (GMD) and determine the most common watercourses. If there is more than one, I can then divide the Militia Dist into watersheds and the result is a look at the people (or taxable persons) living in a particular area of the of the District. (Note that when using this method, only the "residence" line [on the Tax list] of the land owners should be used.) Water courses and their attendant watersheds do seem to play a very large role in locating lands in the Headrights Counties.
