Virginia. Here's some info. on the John M. Tilley that you found in the 1860 census. He was born 1826, died 1862 in Virginia. He married (1) Sarah Pringle (?) and (2) Frances Ann Peek on May 31, 1855 in Taliferro Co. (Frances Ann Peek was daughter of James Peek and Marian Swain and aunt to Arabella Peek, first wife of my grandfather, William Chesley Taylor.) “Lt. John M. Tilley was killed on Garnett's Farm near Richmond, Va. on 27 June 1862. He was buried on Malvern Hill but the body later returned to Taliaferro County, Ga." Thanks, Rhoda. This may give a clue as to the name of the 3rd Reg Cavalry Co D.... it may have been named for him since he had died in an earlier battle. John M. Tilly was part of Co. D. 15th Regiment (we do have that one on-line. http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/taliaferro/military/civilwar/rosters/cod15.txt In reading the roster there were a number of men killed on that same day...and several also wounded. I feel certain there is a newspaper account of the formation of this Cavalry. Usually there was a "send off" from their home county. Entered active service 09/15/1863 (this seems to be in the middle of the war.... maybe we can find out what was going on in Northern Georgia during those months.) Finding out that John Tilly was killed makes me even more curious about the books in the Historical Society. So if anyone happens to be going there, check on those for us. Maybe they give us a clue about this man and if he was the one the Company was named after. At 05:33 PM 12/11/2004 -0500, RhodaFone@aol.com wrote: >He was born 1826, died 1862 in Virginia.
