    3. Mikki wrote to me with this question, and I hoped someone on the list might have an answer: ==================== Just looking at the obit on Herschel V. BEAZLEY, and I see where he was cremated. He has a military marker at Crawfordville Baptist Church Cemetery. I was wondering if anyone knew whether his ashes were buried at the cemetery or is this marker just a cenotaph? Marker reads: HERSCHEL V. BEAZLEY SGT US ARMY WORLD WAR II APR 16 1925 NOV 28 1998 734TH RAILWAY OPERATIONS BATTALION ============ obituary========= The Atlanta Constitution, December 1, 1998 [photo caption: "Herschel Beazley, a World War II veteran, worked 44 years as a railroad agent, retiring in 1985 from CSX."] Herschel Beazley, 73, chief doorkeeper at state Senate By Joel Groover STAFF WRITER Herschel Beazley had two essential qualities for chief doorkeeper at the Georgia Senate: a strong voice and an even temper. When it came time to convene the Senate for a vote, Mr. Beazley strolled the halls of the Capitol shouting, "Voting!" to the noisy crowds. The 73-year-old Atlanta resident - who kept the main door at the Senate from 1985 to 1998 - was an expert at getting senators to their seats while keeping everybody else out in the hall, said Secretary of the Senate Frank Eldridge. "It can be very frustrating, but he was always very calm," he said. The memorial service for Mr. Beazley, who died of cardiac arrest Saturday at St. Luke's Hospital in Jacksonville, was today at A.S. Turner & Sons. The body was cremated. Another memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Crawfordville Baptist Church. Mr. Beazley, a World War II veteran, worked 44 years as a railroad agent, retiring in 1985 from CSX, before he began working at the Senate. He befriended many senators and staffers and enjoyed briefing volunteer doorkeepers on their responsibilities, said his wife, Mary W. Beazley of Atlanta. Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Herschel V. Beazley Jr. of Americus and Ben W. Beazley of Smyrna; a sister, Nell V. Rhodes of Cedartown; and two grandsons. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Egleston Children's Hospital, 1405 Clifton Road N.E., Atlanta, GA 30322.
