Hi Jason. The following is on the Washington, Georgia website: _http://www.kudcom.com/www/mark03/mark13.html_ (http://www.kudcom.com/www/mark03/mark13.html) The Church of the Purification Locust Grove Academy In 1790 several Catholic families of English descent from Maryland settled near Locust Grove. They established the first Roman Catholic Church in Georgia and erected a log church in 1792. A priest, Father John LeMoin, was sent to it from Baltimore. French families, fleeing the French Revolution and, later, several Irish families joined the colony. After 1860 a church was erected in Sharon, as the Locust Grove location had become too remote. Locust Grove Academy, the first chartered Roman Catholic Academy in Georgia, was formed about 1818. Many prominent Georgians have come from these early Catholic families. Taken from the collections of notes by the late Lula Gunn Moore for the C. S. A. graves in Taliaferro County. Lula took this list from an article dated Sept 18th, 1897. Lula (1867 - 1948) was the first paid curator of the Alexander Stephen Historical Site and gathered so many little things for the Historical society of Taliaferro County and the home of Alexander Stephens. She was the daughter of William Robert Gunn and Emily Emma Dickson. -------------------------------------------------------------- At a meeting of the the Confederate Veterans of Taliaferro County the following resolution was adopted Resolved that we appoint an old Confederate Veteran in each Militia Dist. to aid the Ladies Memorial Association in the collecting funds for the confederate Monument now under contract to be erected on the court house square. The following were chosen as a committee for their respective districts, an it is requested that they appoint some official lady assistant 601 Dist. Samuel J. Chapman 603 Dist. John A. Caldwell 604 Dist. Bob Evans 605 Dist. William Garrett 607 Dist. R. H. Rhodes 608 Dist S. J. Jones 172 Dist W.O. Wright Love to know if anyone has researched any of the names above. I am updating the files of the historical Society in Taliaferro and the Alexander Stephens historical site. Any history is an addition to these files I keep finding when asking people about the Civil War
This sounds so interesting. Do you know what section of Taliaferro County that your G-Uncle lived in? That might give us a clue as to where to look. Academies were in most counties of GA -- and some of the earliest had to be designated by the Legislature. GALILEO has some of them -- although I don't know that I've looked for Taliaferro County. If someone has the time perhaps they could try to locate this. It usually tells the Trustees and the date it was formed. Jeanne Arguelles shared this wonderful idea, and I thought some of you might be interested in doing it ! Her sample card is awesome! Another fun idea... I made my kids some "Ancestor Trading Cards." They're about 4x6 laminated cards; the front has a picture of the ancestor, their name, and their relationship to my kids (eg; great-grandmother). The back has their "stats" - birth, death, marriage, parents -- and a couple interesting facts about the person. The idea is to spread them out on the floor/table and match them up with parents/spouse/child to form a family tree. My kids enjoyed them -- although probably not as much as I enjoyed making them! Lol! Here are a few samples: http://www.rootsweb.com/~gamadiso/tradingcards.htm
Hi Rem. That's why I was wondering where the info. came from showing Quinea O'Neal as a Confederate Soldier. I have seen his tombstone and it's very clear that he was in the War of 1812. Unfortunately his tombstone inscription only gives his year of death. But I have some census records that show him as age 56 in 1850, age 64 in 1860, age 70 in 1870 and age 86 in 1880. So an estimated age of about 65-66 in 1861 is pretty old to go to war. "Taliaferro County History" by the Historical Society, shows him as Clerk of the Superior Court 1/23/1862. (I don't know for sure but I'm thinking that's when his term began?) In addition, he is witnessing deeds in Taliaferro Co. in 1861, 1862 and 1863. Although I guess not impossible, I agree with you that it's doubtful he served in the Confederate Army. Thanks very much. Rhoda
Hi Rem I will place that note next to his name on the names I was given from the Alexander Stephens historical Site. They don't have a listing for the war of 1812. I am not sure I want to take on that task. But then again it all depends how far I am able to go with the civil war information. I am making a list of sources of each findings. Any reports or names you may have will be a neat addition to our Portwoods, Ogletrees, Edwards and Jones history. I am checking with the researchers on ground in Crawfordville on Sunday to see what additional history I can find to the list I have. I don't want to leave anyone out of this list. I was told Wiley missed a few cemeteries when compiling his book. I am looking for those cemeteries too. Thanks so much for your input. your cuz Terri -------Original Message------- From: Rem B. Does anyone know who did the original research on the names that the Alexander Stephens Site uses when talking about the soldiers of the Crawfordville Baptist Church Cemetery? I am not receiving any monetary compensation for this information. I am researching this information on my free time. Since it is a 40 mile trek to Crawfordville I am only going when I attend Church in the area or attend meetings at the historical society. I have 3 small children as well so my trips have to be prearranged. Any help with this project will be greatly appreciated by all involved. The Internet is only once source we are using. We are only updating the names for the County to use when being interviewed by visitors to the county. They only have the list for the Crawfordville Baptist Church. In January or February next year they are clearing the site of the former home of Alexander Stephens parents in Sandy Cross. They are preparing a tour of the Crawfordville Church Cemetery in Janurary. I would love to help the new director talk about our little town cemtery and the lives of the civil war veterans there. He is not a native of Taliaferro County but moving there really soon. Thanks for your time Terri Saturday
The list I posted came from a list I pulled from the Alexander Stephens Historical Site that the director asked me to check on and doing a follow up on the names. I am not sure who done the first posting but documenting my steps as I find a regiment for them I would love to also have any family history of those names to post with the file so other researhers that do not use the internet can fide family members. Thanks for the posting Terri

This information is going on file at Alexander Stephens Historical Site to be reconized at a later date that has note been announced yet. I am tackling this list this week. If you may have information located at another graveyard in Talaiferro County I am collecting that too. Thanks in advance for any help. Terri Saturday
Hi All Is there anyone researching any civil War information in Taliaferro County. I took on a project for the Alexander Stephens Park in hopes to add their history found there. They do not have a research room at the Park found there so I am taking all I am able to find to them and to the historical Society to place the information I am able to provide. If you do not wish to publish your information write me at tlsaturday@nu-z.net and I will send you an address you can send any pictures or history to. They have pictures there at the site taken in the early 1900s I would love to be able to help them talk about when others drop by. Any help you can give will be great appreciated. I gave them a good bit of history today to get them started after I found out what they didn't have and decided to ask for your help. Any help will be great. I have many family members that fought in Civil War, they want all the CSA soldier burials found within the county. And any history about them. No information is too little. Thanks in advance Terri Saturday

Bethel Springs Baptist Church was established at Bethel Springs about two miles south of Crawfordville. At first this was the first Protestant Church in the Taliaferro area and originally was established July 30, 1802 by Rev. Jesse Mercer and Rev. James Matthews with twenty one members. There was no cemetery for this church. In 1827 the Bethel church was moved on land given by William Janes, one of Georgia's largest planters. The first pastor was Rev. James Robertson; first deacons were John Walker and Etheldred Wilder. Known widely for its liberality, this was renamed Crawfordville Baptist Church and granted the use of its building to other denominations while their churches were being organized. Many fiery political speeches have been made in the church building. The present structure was erected in 1889. One pastor at the Crawfordville Baptist Church was Billinston M Sanders. B. M. Sanders was a witness of Salley Edwards Davis will, and Salley could not have had more scholarly or more illustrious man as pastor and friend. Brother Sanders was one of the men that helped establish Mercer Institute, named for Rev. Jesse Mercer. This Institute was established in 1833 in the beautiful Village of Penfield, Green County, Georgia. (Mercer Institute is now known as Mercer University and is located in Macon, Bibb County, Georgia ) Penfield was the cradle of Mercer University. It is seven miles north of Greensboro, and here in this obscure village much of the history of the Baptist church of Georgia has written. Here the famous University of Georgia Baptists was founded and here the great Jesse Mercer sleeps on the old college campus. In Salleys will, there was mention only of slaves and personal property, as sundry bedding clothes, but in the 1849 division of her estate, land in Wilkinson County, Georgia. -------Original Message------- From: Vivian Toole Date: 11/01/05 11:36:52 To: GATALIAF-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Former Name of Crawfordville Baptist Church??? I published the Minutes of Bethesda Baptist Church c. 1817-1865 in 1990. Bethesda is east of Union Point and north of Hwy 44 to Washington in Greene County. The minutes have the names of lots of the older churches in the area. So I began wondering when I got the posting below what the name of it was previously when it was formed in 1802.
