A mineral spring upon the plantation of Mr. J. W. Darracott about two miles north of Crawfordville, the existence of which had been known for years, have lately attracted the attention of several of our citizens. The water contains sulphur, iron, and several other minerals which we are not chemist enough to determine, and we believe the water is said by all who have visited it to contain positive medical qualities. We hope Mr. Darracott will have the water of this spring analyzed, and fully tested as to its medical properties. Should it prove to be all that is hoped for it, it may yet prove to be a blessing to the sick. All rights reserved. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/copyright.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/gafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Rhoda Taylor Fone http://www.rootsweb.com/~archreg/vols/00012.html#0002953 December 9, 2005, 5:05 pm Author: Rhoda Taylor Fone Joseph Thomas "Tom" Harrison was born Dec. 4, 1827, died Feb. 2, 1924, and is buried at Crawfordville Baptist Cemetery. He was son of William M. Harrison and Martha Rhodes. Wiley Jones’ cemetery book shows his tombstone inscription as “T. J. Harrison,” which is incorrect. His tombstone clearly shows the inscription as “J. T. Harrison. (See photo on Taliaferro Co. GenWeb Archives, Cemetery section, Crawfordville Baptist Church Cemetery.) In addition, the inscription on the tombstone of his second wife, Amanda Hackney, states that she was “Wife of J. T. Harrison.” (Photo also posted on Taliaferro Co. Archvies.) He was a Confederate Soldier, listed as Sergeant in the 3rd Regiment Cavalry (State Guards), Company D. There is some confusion regarding his military record as there are two listings: (1) J. T. Harrison and (2) Thomas J. Harrison. The records are identical and one record shows that Thomas J. Harrison was an alternate name for J. T. Harrison. This seems very likely as, to date, no Thomas J. Harrison has been found in Taliaferro Co. records. Tom Harrison was married twice and had children by each marriage. His first marriage was to Sarah Ann Darracott, Jan. 13, 1853 (Taliaferro Co. Mar. Bk. A, p. 241). She was b. ca. 1835 and apparently died sometime between 1857 and 1860. She was daughter of James B. & Tabitha (Conner) Darracott. He married second to Amanda M. Hackney, Nov. 23, 1860 (Taliaferro Co. Mar. Bk. A, p. 291) Amanda was b. March 22, 1835, d. May 7, 1893, buried Crawfordville Baptist Cemetery. She was daughter of James T. & Mary (Jeffries) Hackney. He left a will in Taliaferro Co. dated March 17, 1919 and probated Feb. 2, 1924. In his will he names his four daughters, Mrs. Fannie Elizabeth Flynt, Mrs. Anna Estella Moore, Mrs. Margaret Ophelia Allen and Mrs. Mary Jane McGiboney. (Taliaferro Co. Will Rec. C., page 8.) CHILDREN BY SUSAN A. DARRACOTT: 1. James William Harrison, b. ca. 1856. No further information. He is not named in his father’s will and may have died young. He last appears in Taliaferro Co. records in the 1870 census, listed as age 16. 2. Margaret Ophelia Harrison, b. Nov. 4, 1855, d. Feb. 27, 1925. She married Nathan A. Allen, Dec. 17, 1874 (Taliaferro Co. Mar. Bk. B, p. 66.). Both buried Crawfordville Baptist Cemetery. Nathan Allen was b. June 12, 1852, d. July 4, 1927, son of John T. Allen and Susan M. Chapman. 3. Mary Jane Harrison, b. Dec. 1, 1857, Taliaferro Co., d. Oct. 7, 1929, Taliaferro Co., married (as his second or third(?) wife) to William Robert McGibony, April 11, 1897 (Taliaferro Co. Mar. Bk. C., p. 357). Both buried Crawfordville Baptist Cemetery. CHILDREN BY AMANDA HACKNEY: 1. Frances Elizabeth Harrison, b. Sept. 16, 1861, d. Jan. 29, 1942, married (as his second wife) to Henry H. Flynt, Feb. 22, 1883 (Taliaferro Co. Mar. Bk. B, p. 149). Both buried Crawfordville Baptist Cemetery. Henry H. Flynt is listed in the 1900 census as being born May 1845. He was son of Augustus Wesley Flynt and Sarah D. McCoy. 2. Anna Estella Harrison, b. Feb. 6, 1863, d. March 18, 1939, married Marion E. Moore, May 17, 1888, (Taliaferro Co. Mar. Bk. B, p. 194). 1. Re: Absalom G. Evans
    2. A recent listing of CSA soldiers in the Taliaferro Co. GenWeb Archives, by Terri Saturday, states that Absalom G. Evans married Mary E. Rhodes, daughter of Absalom and Martha Chapman Rhodes. That is incorrect. Mary E. Rhodes, wife of Absalom G. Evans, was daughter of Asa Rhodes and his first wife Jane Woodall. The proof is in the following. Taliaferro Co., GA Marriage Bk. A.: Absalom Evans m. Mary Rhodes, Oct. 17, 1850. Mary E. Rhodes, daughter of Absalom and Martha (Chapman) Rhodes was only 4 years old in the 1850 census, so could not have married Absalom Evans in that same year. There is good proof that Mary E. Rhodes, daughter of Absalom and Martha (Chapman) Rhodes, married William J. Norton. Taliaferro Co., GA Marriage Bk. A.: Miss M. E. Rhodes to William J. Norton Nov. 13, 1865. From :Taliaferro County, Georgia Records and Notes, by Alvin Mel Lunceford, Jr. Deed Bk. F, p. 292, July 30, 1867 Absalom Rhodes to William J. Norton, MARRIED TO MARY E. DAUGHTER OF ABSALOM RHODES. . See Plat Book 5, p. 48. Test: JTA, W. J. Rees J.P. Mary E. Rhodes, daughter of Asa Rhodes and Jane Woodall, is listed in the 1850 census as age 16. This age is consistent with the ages given for the wife of Absalom G. Evans in later census records. I have not found Absalom & Mary Evans in 1860, but in 1870, Absalom G. Evans is listed as age 36 and Mary E. as age 35. In 1880, A.G. Evans is age 48, wife Mary E., is age 46. 1850 Census, Taliaferro Co., GA Division 78 Roll 83, Page 319 6 September 1850 Dwelling 55, Family 55 ASA RHODES, age 36, m, Farmer, val. real est: 4000, b. 2. Hi. Some time ago, I posted the will of Lucinda Woodall in the Taliaferro Co. GenWeb Archives. Under additional comments I listed the children of Lucinda and Johnson Woodall and made a careless mistake. I listed a son William T. Woodall, b. ca. 1855. That should be John T. Woodall. There was no son William T. Woodall and I apologize for the mistake. Rhoda

    3. The following is taken from"The History of Wilkes County, Georgia", by Robert M. Willingham, Jr. on page 67: "Locust Grove Academy was chartered in 1818, near Sharon, as was the first Roman Catholic school chartered in Georgia. The Female Academy in 1819 occupied the old theatre building. The Male Academy was moved from the hill west of town to a lot facing Main and Jefferson Streets near the new Methodist Church. During this era Duncan G. Campbell conducted the Select School for Girls which was a popular finishing school for young ladies. Another teach was Robert Mabry who had come from South Carolina in 1820, to hold classes as well as oversee one of the plantations. He married Hettie Lunsford of Wilkes and moved to Cobb County in 1838. In general, the school term began in July in order to allow the pupils time off during the planting and harvesting season. This did not indicate a lack of concern for education, but a mutual adherence of one to other. Among the pupils at the Washington Academy during these years was Alexander Stephens who, owning devotion to his tutor Alex! ander Hamilton Webster, added Hamilton as his middle name, eventually becoming the great statesman, Alexander Hamilton Stephens." I recommend the book. Don ----- Original Message ----- From: RhodaFone@aol.com To: GATALIAF-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, November 14, 2005 12:03 PM Subject: RE: Locust Grove Academy Hi Jason. The following is on the Washington, Georgia website: _http://www.kudcom.com/www/mark03/mark13.html_ (http://www.kudcom.com/www/mark03/mark13.html) The Church of the Purification Locust Grove Academy In 1790 several Catholic families of English descent from Maryland settled near Locust Grove. They established the first Roman Catholic Church in Georgia and erected a log church in 1792. A priest, Father John LeMoin, was sent to it from Baltimore. French families, fleeing the French Revolution and, later, several Irish families joined the colony. After 1860 a church was erected in Sharon, as the Locust Grove location had become too remote. Locust Grove Academy, the first chartered Roman Catholic Academy in Georgia, was formed about 1818. Many prominent Georgians have come from these early Catholic families.
