Hi Jason. After Rem's great information about Robert S. Burch being a law partner of Alexander H. Stephens, I did a search and came up with the two articles below. I think the date of the second article might help prove that her gr. grandmother was born in Taliaferro Co., probably in Crawfordville. The Augusta Chronicle and Sentinel Saturday Morning, January 30 1841 STEPHENS & BURCH Attorneys At Law Crawfordville, Geo. Will practice in the counties of Taliaferro, Greene, Hancock, Oglethorpe, Wilkes, Warren, Elbert and Lincoln. ALEXANDER H. STEPHENS ROBERT S. BURCH Jan 14-ly The following article seems to show that this partnership must have split up at some point before January 1845. The Augusta Chronicle and Sentinel Saturday Morning, January 4, 1845 LAW NOTICE - ROBERT S. BURCH will attend punctually to any professional business entrusted with him in the counties of Taliaferro, Hancock, Warren, Wilkes, Lincoln, Oglethorpe and Greene. Crawfordville, Jan. 17, 1844. Note: there is some confusion re: this second article. The date it appeared in the paper is Jan. 4, 1845 but the last line of the article shows Jan. 17, 1844. I checked for an article that might have appeared on the 1844 date, but did not come up with one. Hope this helps some. Rhoda
To those interested in Robert Burch: In his book titled ALEXANDER H. STEPHENS OF GEORGIA, which I highly recommend to all who have Taliaferro county roots, Thomas E. Schott makes the following two references to Robert Burch: "It (Stephens' reputation) was secure enough by 1841 for him to forego running for reelection. His law business demanded much of his time, and even the partner he had taken on in 1839, Robert Burch, failed to relieve the burden. But Stephens was prospering." (p. 44) In writing about Gov. Joseph E. Brown of Georgia, Schott says: "Opinions on the man varied greatly, and Stephens received them from both ends of the spectrum. From Linton came glowing reports of Brown's speaking abilities and fine personal character. Bob Burch, Stephens' old law partner, knew Brown better. He could not vote for him, he told Stephens. Not only did Brown lack "open candor and untarnished character for fairness in the transactions of this life (including POLITICS)," but he was also "a complete demagogue." (p. 234) The citation here is to letters from Burch to Stephens in STEPHENS PAPERS. I hope this sheds some light on their relations for you. Rem B.
