Granby O. Tuggle, a survivor of the Bataan Death March in the Philippines, and first sergeant of the Medical Detachment at Camp Gordon from May 1950 until February of this year, received his final military tribute last week. The soldier of 15 years service, who had helped many to carry through on the infamous Death March died last week at the U.S. Army hospital after a heart attack. An honor guard from Gordon’s Headquarters Detachment, ASU 3441, fired over his grave at the Crawfordville, Ga. cemetery. A Gordon soldier who met Sergeant Tuggle during the Battle of Bataan and saw him many times during the march from peninsula to Camp O’Donnell on Luzon, remembered the way he aided the troops. “Although sick himself on the march, Sergeant Tuggle carried others along,” said Sgt. William K. Smith Jr., stationed with the Medical Holding Detachment at the U.S. Army hospital. He was successful in begging medicine from the Japs and would contact guerrilla forces when he was sent on woodchopping details. This action brought extra medicines into the compound and also aroused the concern of the enemy, who questioned him many times.” The Japanese later sent Sergeant Tuggle to Japan, where he was imprisoned until the end of the war. Additional Comments: Granby Overton Tuggle was born January 20, 1912, Greene Co., GA, died July 23, 1953, son of Granby Hillyer Tuggle, Jr., and Annie Mae Rhodes. 1. PEEKS AND OTHERS/CHURCH MINUTE BOOK
    2. Vivian Toole
    3. These are two references from the minutes of Bethesda Baptist Church, east of Union Point off Hwy 44 to Washington. I published these c. 1990. If someone would like a copy go to my web page at http://www.inu.net/vcates. There are some more listings for Peek in the index but these seem to be the more significant of them. You can find copies of my book in major libraries across the south. I still have copies available or you can get one from the church if you live close enough to go by there when somebody is there. I recognized the last name of Peek from doing or trying to do so much research in the area over the past 40 years. Booths also lived in the same general area east and north east of Union Point in the eastern part of Greene County. However, there are no Booths listed in the index. Taliaferro County is well published. You might find what you need there. I will forward this to the Taliaferro County list. I am not personally researching Peeks. They do not seem to be intermarried with any of my lines. I have approaching 2000 names in my GEDCOM File from the area of Woodville and Bethesda Church in Greene County, Georgia. I just made a connection from this list in the last couple of weeks on Gardner descendents from the Durhams. I am researching Durham, Toole, Edmonds, Bowles, Lindsey, Reynolds, Malone, Pollard, Freeman ("stone wall") among others. W. Edward's Memory. God has seen fit to removed from our midst our beloved brother John William Edwards, who for many years has been a member of Sandy Cross Baptist Church. In his death the church has lost one of its most devoted and efficient members while we miss him here we are greatly consoled with the assurance that he was ready for the summons. He ceased from his labors here to enter upon that rest that belongs to the people of God. He died in Crawfordville, March 16, 1900. He leaves a wife and seven children, five girls and two boys, and a good mother to all of whom we trust God will administer their wants. His place is vacant and our hearts are made sad, yet we bow to the will of Him who can do no wrong, trusting in Him for grace to bear whatever he may send believing that all is for our good and his glory. His sorrowing family are commended to trust the God whom the deceased so faithfully trusted. God sends what is best for earthly mortals We rest in the palm of his hand When trials press closely upon us, Which we cannot understand. AUNT SALLIE Lyneville.
