Hi Rhoda I should have reworded Marcus notes as James T. Andrews being the only child from first marriage. from your notes sent to me before... OBITUARY -- MRS. ANN CHAPMAN Crawfordville GA - June 1880 transcribed by Rhoda Fone Departed this life on the 22d instant, after a protracted and painful illness near Crawfordville, at the residence of her son William H. II. Chapman, Mrs. Ann, consort of William H. Chapman. She was born June 21, 1795 and was therefore eighty-five years and one day old. In many respects she was a most remarkable woman, possessor of those elements of character, in a very high degree, which dignify and adorn poor, erring human nature in its fallen state. She seemed fitten by nature and her Savior to move among her neighbors, friends and associates the very embodiment of kindness, gentleness, and love. It was, however, in the family circle her virtues shone in their brightest luster, and it is not too much to say of her, that she was one of the tenderest and most loving of mothers, faithful and dutiful of wives. Mrs. Chapman belonged to the old regime of women who are so rapidly passing away, and whose places will be so hard to fill, for they are in very deed and in truth the salt of the earth, and when one of them falls, she will be missed. Her maiden name was Miss Ann Connell. She was born in Hancock County, Ga., and married to Mr. Mark Andrews (who was one of the first clerks of Taliaferro county, and brother to that noble old gentleman, the Hon. Garnett Andrews, late of Wilkes County, deceased). By this union with Mr. Andrews she became the mother of several children, all of whom are gone from earth, except one son, J.T. Andrews, of Powelton, who still remains with her three Chapman children to illustrate the teachings and virtues of this pious and godly mother, she having married Mr. Chapman, her surviving husband in 1834. Mrs. Chapman, openly confessed Christ before men by following him in baptism, whither she was led by Elder Joseph Roberts July 26, 1828, being baptized into the fellowship of Old Bethel, now Crawfordville Baptist Church, and as we firmly believe, into the fellowship and communion of "The Redeemed of The Lamb." having been a church member for more than a half century, consistent and exemplary in deportment. She is not therefore dead, and cannot die! It is but the transition from a state of sorrowing and suffering to one of perennial bliss and happiness in her Fathers House, wherein are many mansions, and her body will come forthredeemed and revivified in the image of her Savior, in his own good time. Therefore, cease to mourn, dear friends and relatives of Aunt Ann, for your loss is reparable by going to her, and is and will be your and her eternal praise. F.R. Crawfordville, Ga. June 30, 1880 thanks for the note posted here, I didn't know if you wanted to post more of your family is why I left it out of the email to the board Terri

A little family history for you...... George Bob Thomas Edwards, son of Thomas Jefferson and Mary Portwood Edwards was born February 11, 1859. He married December 03, 1882 to Martha Mattie Lyle, daughter of the Civil War hero James Lyle. Mattie was born August 22, 1863. They lived at several locations in Taliaferro County while raising there family. Their last location was found in Downtown Crawfordville on Reynolds St. During his life in Crawfordville, George Thomas Edwards signature is found upon many wedding license and documents that have been located in the Crawfordville Court House. He preformed many marriages as justice of the peace for our family members, Lucius Standifer Edwards and Mary Alice Portwood, and their first cousins Thomas Henry Edwards and Stella Portwood. Just to name a few. Thomas Henry and Stella Portwood Edwards were my great grand parents. Bob was a prominent citizen. Before relocating to the city of Crawfordville, and after he had lost his arm in a freak accident in the cotton gin owned by his first wife on November 3rd, 1891, Bob worked as a Tax collector between the years of February 06, 1893 - January 09, 1895. George Thomas Edwards was paying the taxes on his mothers property, during the later years and he was the person who assisted his mother with her applications for a Confederate pension. After many visits to the Court house I have not found the business opening of George Thomas Edwards but some time in the early 1900 George opened the business of Edwards and Sons and commenced to run the establishment with his sons. Bob which was known to be a merchant at a locale grocery store, named Edwards and Sons. This store was located directly across from our Crawfordville Hotel, named The Tavern. He and sons Dewitt, Roger and Rem operated the store located across the street from the Tavern and after his sons died, he seems to have gone into business with a Mr. Parks. Mr. Park's wife ran the Park's House for many of the teachers. (The Taliaferro County Historical Society has a sign that once stood in their busines, so neat) Mattie died July 25, 1909 of a sudden heart attack, Bob died October 19,1937 The first Burial of Martha was originally beside her father James Lyle in the Saggus Lyle Cemetery, in the Edgewood Community. After the death of George Thomas Bob Edwards, Marthas body was moved and placed next to Bob in the Crawfordville Cemetery. Her original tombstone is still in the Saggus/Lyle Cemetery, and she has another one in Crawfordville. The Saggus/Lyle cemetery is located just across the road from the James Lyles home place, though no building exists there today. Their children are George Albertus, Dewitte Talmage, William Roger, James Thomas, Rem Blanchard, Janie Beatrice, and Mattie Vasti. I take this time to thank my Edwards cousins that descend from George Thomas Edwards and Martha Lyle. They were the Grandparents of Rem Blanchard Edwards Jr. Who has been chatting with lately and I have corresponded with for some time. He has encouraged my writings found within the Advocate Democrat and this board. But a special thank you goes out to him for making my Christmas very special this year. (Happy New Year too, lets make the new year even more special.) Do you happen to know where George's house was in Sandy Cross? I found a few land documents in the Court house but didn't copy due to the short time I had. It was neat though I found where Etheldred Edwards, our ancestor bought land from James Lyle in there. Proves my grandpa's land was James Lyle's from the beginning We still own 43 acres of the family land owned for over 200 years in the county. Thanks Taliaferro County for being my favorite home town. Virginia, The following paragraph explains how the QUAD names are created. QUAD - A fixed-length field containing the first eight characters of the USGS map reference code. The first five digits of the code represent the degrees of latitude and longitude of the area in which the quadrangle is located. These digits are followed by a hyphen and then a two character alphanumeric grid reference to a cell within the 1-degree by 1-degree block of area. The rows within each block are coded A through H and the columns are coded 1 through 8, both beginning in the southeast corner of the 1-degree by 1-degree area. Example: 37085-A5 Then, my explanation: Since Taliaferro county is between latitudes n33 and n34 and almost entirely between longitudes w82 and w83, all the QUAD maps would begin with 33082. Since there are 60 minutes in each degree, when they divide each degree up into 7.5 minute squares, they get 64 QUAD maps in each square degree. The bottom (south) row of these QUAD maps are named A1, A2, A3 ... A8 (beginning at the east end). The next row would be B!, B2, ... B8. With a little calculation, I believe your entry for Beaverdam Creek: Beaverdam Creek GA Taliaferro stream 333315N 0824326W Cadley would show up on the 33082-E6 quadrangle map, which for some reason has been named "Cadley." The specific point (333315N 0824326W) turns out to be very near to the point where Beaverdam Creek flows into Williams Creek, which forms the east boundary of Taliaferro county. The town of Cadley is 4.0 miles ESE of the Beaverdam Creek end and would be on the 33082-E6 quadrangle map. If you are not confused enough by this, ask again. bruce
List Members, I am again cross posting with additional notes on my POLLARD and EDMONDS line with connections that migrated through Wilkes, Taliaferro, and Greene, and Oglethorpe County, Georgia, at various times. On the POLLARDS, I think my line goes: William Pollard of Culpepper Co., Va. William Pollard b. by c. 1760 Va. d. before 1820 m. Jane Thompson I think he is the one who servied in the Rev. War. I have not research this line this far back, This is from other people. Seaborn Pollard, Sr. b. c. 1780 m. c. 18000-1805 Sarah M {_?_} b. c. 1782 d. October 9, 1872 from newspaper reference of that time period in Greene County, Georgia. Sarah Pollard m. 1849 Wilkes County, Georgia, to James Edmonds On the EDMONDS line: Francis Edmonds m. Rachel [_?_] in Halfax County, Virginia, on Bannister River 1768 John Edmonds m. Winnifred Buckner d. Anthony Buckner and Amy Powell Powels back to c. 1715 St. Paul's Parsih, Stafford County, Virginia James Edmonds b. 1776 m. 1st. in Lincoln Co, Ga. Stratham (various spelling) m. 2nd 1812 Wilkes County, Ga. Sarah/Sallie R./Ross Bruce dau. of Elizabeth [_?_] and Daniel Bruce d. bef. 1803 James M. Edmonds m. 1849 Wilkes County Sarah Pollard Buried with markers in teh Rayle Cemetery, Wilkes County, Georgia. I am estimating the Seaborn Pollard, Sr. was born somewhere around 1780 or so, ball park figure, and died before the 1850 census. Through the Conference Minutes of Bethesda Baptist Church I have established that his wife was Sarah M. {_?_}. This matches up with the census and the Taliaferro County deed below in my notes. She is suppose to have died October 9, 1872. I have estimated her birth as being somewhere before that date in 1782 in Virginia according to the census. I am also making an educated guess that their marriage would have been somewhere around 1800 to 1810. I don't have age estimated on some of their children. At the present time I have 661 people in an Edmonds file who are either descendents of Francis Edmonds and Rachel[_?_] or connected to some of their descendents. When I published the Bethesda Church Minutes I was looking for my Reynold line, but found a lot of other "stuff" instead. Not much entered on the Pollards yet. I still have copies that would make a nice Christmas present. Lots of Taliaferro County folks in the index. I am originaly from Georgia. My family lived with my maternal grandmother when I was a preschooler and I went to Church at Bethesda east of Union Point in Greene County. I still have first cousins there. I just married a Texan. So don't e-mail me about other lines that came to Texas unless you know that they connect back to these counties in Georgia because I can't help you. I am still not clear on the McAvoy connections. Maybe more than one Pollard-McAvoy marriage. Vivian Cates, Rt. #2 Box 52-A, Alto, Texas 75925-9607 1-936-858-3801 http://www.inu.net/vcates NOTES I HAVE ENTERED IN MY GEN. Sorry, hit the wrong button and my previous message was sent before I was finished. Apparently Maggie Andrews was not the only daughter of Dr. James T. Andrews. More on that soon. Rhoda
Terri. It's too bad you never knew Don Mercer. He died several years before you began your Taliferro County reserach. Don was the ultimate expert on the Mercer family. He sent me that obituary of Hermon Mercer because my gr.gr. grandaunt, Elizabeth Darracott, was his third wife. (It was her second marriage.) I love the opening sentence "Hermon Mercer is no more!" The people who wrote those old obituaries were certainly dramatic. He also sent me Elizabeth's obituary and both are posted in the Taliaferro County Archives Obituary section. Regarding Marcus Andrews, as you know, his wife Ann Connell, was my gr.gr. grandmother through her second marriage to William H. Chapman. I have researched the Marcus Andrews family quite thoroughly and you are mistaken that he only had one son. If you will look at the census records I just posted for him, you will see that he had two sons and two daughters. However I can only account for the two sons and one daughter. (1) John William Andrews, b. ca. 1821, d. 1866, (2) Frances Elizabeth Andrews, died Oct. 30, 1847, and (3) Dr. James Thomas Andrews, b. Jan. 31, 1830, died after 1880. Maggie Andrews who married
Dear List Members, Among my Georgia lines, I am researching Pollard and Edmonds in Wilkes, Greene, and Taliaferro, Georgia. I am cross posting to the Pollard, Wilkes, Greene, Taliaferro, and just for good measure the Oglethorpe County, Georgia, lists. Below are some of the notes I have thus far typed into the notes section of my genealogy program under Seaborn (Various spellings) Pollard family. It has been so nice to see the picked up activity on the Taliaferro County list in the past week or so. I have no early family stories Past my great grandparents on the Edmonds/Edmunds or the Pollards. Everything has been from pieceing together the records. My connection to the Pollards is through the Edmonds. James Edmonds m. Sarah Pollard in Wilkes County, Georgia, in 1849. They are buried in the cemetery at Rayle, Wilkes County, Georgia. The Edmonds were in Wilkes, Lincoln, and then Oglethorpe County. I have them back to Francis Edmonds who was in Halifax County Virginia by 1768. Prior to that unproven. France Edmonds/Edmunds and rachel [_?_] and their family moved to Georgia c. 1784-86 and he died with a will in Wilkes County 1799. Use the Kettle Creek information as to who fought there with care because at least one reference claims that Frances and John Edmonds were there, but I can't prove it. They seem to still have been in Halifax County, Virginia during the Rev. War. and came to Georgia later. John Edmonds married Winnifred/Winnie Buckner in Virginia. James . 1st in Lincolm County, then in Wilkes County to Sarah/Sally R.Ross Bruce in 1812. Miss-transcribed in Wilkes County published marriage records as Edwards and Brewer. John, James, and Anthony Edmonds were on the 1820 Oglethrope County, Georgia, Census. Anthony and a Reuben B. Edmonds later show up in Taliaferro County. Reuben B. Edmonds was in the militia and Anthony was buying land from Echols. The Pollards seem to have been in Wilkes, Taliaferro, and then migrated to Greene County, on the 1860 census. One odd thing about this family is that they seem to have had slaves, but I have not found any lands records for them in Taliaferro. Maybe early in Wilkes County??? The Pollards were basically in the northern part of Taliaferro County taken from slices of Wilkes, Oglethorpe, and Greene. This is basically the 605th Georgia Militia District. Same for the Edmonds (various spellings of the last name.) Other researchers claim that William Pollard m. Jane Thompson. That Pollards were from Culpepper County, Virginia. William Pollard was supposed to have been a Rev. Sol. and migrated farther west into Georgia and died in another county. I have trying to work my way back to that proof. A very kind soul off the Pollard list, I think, was kind enough to e-mail me a whole bunch of "stuff" on the Pollards which I have not gotten digested yet and only have parts into my genealogy program. I think my line goes as follows: William Pollard in Culpepper County, Virginia William Pollard m. Jane Thompson he served in the Rev. and came to Georgia Seaborn Pollard m. Sarah M. {_?_} Sarah Pollard m. 1849 James M. Edmonds The proof for the marriage of Seaborn Pollard to Sarah M. [_?_] is from the minutes of Bethesday Baptist Church which I published in 1991. They owned the same slave, Tillah (various spellings). Then this ties in with the deed for a slave in Taliaferro County to which James Edmonds was a party and the 1860-70 census of Greene County, Georgia. It seems that a lot of people who fell into Taliaferro County first attended church at Bethesda Baptist Church east of Union Point, in Greene County before Crawfordville had churches. I still have Church minute books available for sale. E-mail me privately or see my web page at http://www.inu.net/vcates Copies are also available from the church. $25.00 from the church if you live in that area of Georgia or $30 mailed by me. Nice Christmas present for yourself or others. If the Taliaferro County Historical Society library mentioned in earlier postings to the list does not have a copy, I would be willing to work out a trade for a copy. Membership and/or a copy of the county history book mentioned on this list. I have personal copies of Lunceford's book and the 1827 School census book. I was in the Taliaferro Courthouse on Tuesday, July 13, 2004, for a couple of hours. Could not find an estate Administration for either Seaborn Pollard, Jr. or Sr. though I found what might be a reference to it. It seems neither left a will. Any ideas on how these other Pollards would be related to Seaborn would be apprecited also to any clues as to the maiden name of Sarah M. [_?_]. Was Seaborn Pollard, Jr. a veteran of the War of 1812. I don't think he was old enough to be in the Rev. though I have his age pegged as older than some information I have seen. I am also still unclear as to how the McAvoys fit into the family. Maybe more than one McAvoy/Pollard marriage. Vivian Cates, Rt. #2 Box 52-A, Alto, Texas 75925-9607 1-936-858-3801 http://www.inu.net/vcates NOTES ON SEABORN POLLARD, SR. Seaborn Pollard informed the church that he had recently acted disorderly in having in a passion stricken another man with his umbrella while riding the road together. On inquiry from all the circumstances of the case, it appears that the provocation was such as would almost justify such a course of procedure, yet we discountenance and discourage such conduct, on motion he was forgiven and continued in fellowship. It was reported to the church in conference that Br.. W,m. H. Rhodes had had a personal rencounter with a fellow man, Br.. S. Pollard was appointed to cite him to attend next conference in order to answer the charge as reported. (ambiguous, but unimportant) January 14, 1837 Then took up the case of Br. W. H. Rhodes who being present requested that a committee should be appointed in the case and report, whereupon Brethren J. Forrester Snr., M. Bedell & J. Mitchell were nominated agreeable to his request....The Com. appointed at the request of Br.. Rhodes retired and after hearing all the circumstances of the case Reported that they considered him excusable in course he pursued, yet they disapprove of such conduct in church members if it can possibly be avoided. On motion, he was continued in fellowship. p.144 February 18, 1837--it was reported to the church that a want of fellowship existed between Brother Seaborn Pollard & Wm. H. Rhodes. The church appointed Brethren Dickerson, Biddell and Janes to endeavour to effect a reconciliation and also to enquire why they had not made such effort themselves. And report at our next conference. p.145 March 18, 1837--Then took up the case of Brother Pollard & Rhodes. The committee appointed at our last conference reported unfavourable; and further that since the appointment, the parties have had quarreling and attempts to fight with weapons &c. After discussion and investigation the case was deferred to our next conference and the committee was still instructed to labour with the Brethren and report at the next conference their success. April 15, 1837--The case of Brothers Pollard and Rhodes next came up whereupon the committee reported that after a further investigation, they recomment Brother Pollard to the fellowship of the church; But that they are not satisfied with Brother Rhodes, so his case was submitted to the church & the church continued him in fellowship. Also Brother Pollard was continued in fellowship. 1840 CENSUS TALIAFERRO COUNTY, GEORGIA. 606th Georgia Militia District, called Springfield. The protracted and multiplied sufferings of this servant of the Lord were ended by death, on Friday, 13th January at 6 o clock, A.M., at the house of his son, George Franklin Mercer, near Ochussee, Jackson county, Fla., in the 70th year of this age. The venerable and beloved brother, Joshua Mercer, with other affectionate relatives and friends, remained with him till his death and returned from their last mournful duties magnifying the power of the grace of God, as manifested in the last days of this long afflicted disciple of Christ. While his senses continued, he uniformly and calmly expressed his unshaken confidence in the great Atonement and although he thought, if permitted to live longer, he could be of further service to this family, he hesitated not to declare his unreserved submission to the will of his divine Master. How glorious to do thus! That our death may be like his, we must copy his life. 4 REGIMENT (BOOTH'S), GEORGIA MILITIA. 1 LIEUTENANT Received 1 draw in 1832 Cherokee Land Lottery in 601st Georgia Militia District for having been a Soldier in the Last War (Revolution). Clerk of Superior Court, Taliaferro County and Inferior Court in Taliaferro County buried in Greene County uring my search of Crawfordville Cemeteries and deed of The Edwards family I came across the descendant of George L Bird, which most of the Bird information came from. Buford married Polly Keeling on January 4, 1806, in Wilkes County, Georgia. On January 3, 1806, a marriage license was issued to "Blewford Bird" and Polly Keeling" by D. Terrell, Wilkes County Court Ordinary. The marriage was solemnized the next day by William Jones, J.P. The marriage license filed by the Wilkes County Courthouse in Washington, Georgia, appears to have been re-recorded for some reason in the next century, which could be the reason Buford's name is so badly misspelled. A couple of clues to this is that they were written on legal papers dated with the words "Nineteen Hundred", which were crossed out with the year 1808 written beside of it. That in its self is the other clue. Above the certificate, the marriage license issue date is listed as January 3, 1806. Whatever the case, the transcriber did a poor job recording the new license. A couple of us have worked on the surnames for the 1830 census viewing it on Ancestry. Please take a look at these first two pages, and help us with any corrections. The handwriting if pretty good, but sometimes a name can be misread -- so we want your corrections. (You won't hurt our feelings at all!) If you have some more data on them, we could start an addendum file for those remarks. 1830 Taliaferro Census 32 images on Ancestry Each page used 2 images; i.e. 1830 Census Image 1 pg Mercer, Silas Mercer, Hermon (laid out plan of Crawfordville) Ogletree, Littleton Wiggins, Orrin Stevens, Martha Evans, John Jr. Marter ? Below are census records for John Seaborn Taylor. He was born about 1819, probably in Wilkes County, son of Littleton and Martha Taylor, and died after 1880. He was first married to America Flynt, daughter of George Washington Flynt and Barthella Gist, and it appears she was mother of all his children. After her death he remarried to Mrs. Ann Caroline Hughes, Nov. 2, 1865 in Taliaferro County. How are the Index to Deeds arranged in the County Courthouse? Do personnel respond to mail requests for specific copying of a page? I know they don't have the time to do "research", but some courthouse people will make copies of a specific page. The reason I ask this question, is that sometimes Courthouse personnel will "copy" the surname index for a specific request and you can see the listing of deeds that your ancestor was involved in. Then you can write back, requesting a copy of a specific page. Courthouses arrange these indexes differently however. For example, Taylor County (where I have the most experience) have a compiled "index"typewritten. So I requested a copy of the surname "Ruffin" for Grantor and Grantee, and I was sent several pages listing that surname for deeds from 1852- 1930's. (I sent them $2 to cover the cost of copying these few pages at the time of my request) Then I was able to write back requesting specific page numbers for deeds. Each time I would send money according to the request, and I usually kept this to just one or two deeds at one time. But in Talbot County, there is no master index. Each Deed Book has a handwritten index but just for those years covered. I've also done this very successfully with Bertie Co, NC. So if someone who has experience with Taliaferro County Courthouse could share about it, that would be very helpful to everyone. The more deeds we can get transcribed and on-line the more everyone will benefit...and you may find a connection and a "cousin". Virginia
Since I don't know very much about Taliaferro County, I hoped that working together we might share some ideas. I think that some of the Creeks used the names of early Pioneers -- so this would be significant to our study. We know that the waterway was essential to early residents -- grist mills, source of water, traveling before roads established?. I took the GNIS list of waterways/streams and arranged it by the "community" or QUAD name used by GNIS. On their pages, you can click on the Topzone maps to see the actual topographical map of the area. The QUAD name is confusing to me, because I don't always recognize the significance of it. I'm not real good at working with these maps, so if someone can give us some better hints. It seems you need to know the area first before you can actually know what part of the county it really is. Lee Nelson, who is doing extensive work on the area of Taliaferro (southwest corner) where it joins Greene and Hancock (White Plains), has shared his method of locating neighboring land owners. Please, if you have some other experiences and helpful tips, share with all of us. Wouldn't it be great to put together a "grouping" of families? That wold really help reseachers -- and especially those just getting started. One question: Where is the best place to locate the Headright Grant? Is this just at the Archives in Atlanta --- or can it be found in some of the County Deed books? Is it on Microfilm? Tips for understanding Land Research in Headright Counties In the area covered by the Headright Grants (which includes Taliaferro)... 1) For immediate neighbors (those owning adjoining lands) Deed Records and Tax Lists usually do the trick. If the time is early enough, the Headright Grant and especially the plat can be very informative. 2)For a more general look, I usually use Tax Lists and a "layered" approach. What I do is go through the target Militia Dist. (GMD) and determine the most common watercourses. If there is more than one, I can then divide the Militia Dist into watersheds and the result is a look at the people (or taxable persons) living in a particular area of the of the District. (Note that when using this method, only the "residence" line [on the Tax list] of the land owners should be used.) Water courses and their attendant watersheds do seem to play a very large role in locating lands in the Headrights Counties.
