One of our List members just shared with me that the Alex Stephens Museum also allows research. I'm not sure what all they have, but keep it in mind in case you're in the area. And if anyone else has worked there, maybe you can describe the materials you used. Virginia
Ran across this listing while looking for John M. Tilly. Sounds like he was a Medical Doctor -- maybe from Taliaferro County? Co D 15th Burdett, George M. -- 3rd Corporal - July 15, 1861. Appointed Assistant Surgeon of Georgia Hospital at Richmond, Virginia December 18, 1861; Assistant Surgeon C. S. A. (to rank from September 5, 1862 ), and ordered to report to General Lee's Army December 4, 1862; Assistant Surgeon of Braxton's Battalion C. S. A. Artillery. Captured at Winchester, Virginia September 19, 1864. Forwarded to Fortress Monroe, Virginia for exchange January 6, 1865. Asked for 30 days' leave of absence at Richmond, Virginia January 11, 1865.
Thanks, Rhoda. This may give a clue as to the name of the 3rd Reg Cavalry Co D.... it may have been named for him since he had died in an earlier battle. John M. Tilly was part of Co. D. 15th Regiment (we do have that one on-line. http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/taliaferro/military/civilwar/rosters/cod15.txt In reading the roster there were a number of men killed on that same day...and several also wounded. I feel certain there is a newspaper account of the formation of this Cavalry. Usually there was a "send off" from their home county. Entered active service 09/15/1863 (this seems to be in the middle of the war.... maybe we can find out what was going on in Northern Georgia during those months.) Finding out that John Tilly was killed makes me even more curious about the books in the Historical Society. So if anyone happens to be going there, check on those for us. Maybe they give us a clue about this man and if he was the one the Company was named after. At 05:33 PM 12/11/2004 -0500, RhodaFone@aol.com wrote: >He was born 1826, died 1862 in Virginia. Virginia. Here's some info. on the John M. Tilley that you found in the 1860 census. He was born 1826, died 1862 in Virginia. He married (1) Sarah Pringle (?) and (2) Frances Ann Peek on May 31, 1855 in Taliferro Co. (Frances Ann Peek was daughter of James Peek and Marian Swain and aunt to Arabella Peek, first wife of my grandfather, William Chesley Taylor.) “Lt. John M. Tilley was killed on Garnett's Farm near Richmond, Va. on 27 June 1862. He was buried on Malvern Hill but the body later returned to Taliaferro County, Ga." Here's two items in the Historical Society materials: TILLY, JOHN SHIPLEY: The Coming of the Glory, filed Confederacy Facts the Historians Leave Out, A Youth's Confederate Primer. (no dates listed, so don't know if this was a descendant of a CSA veteran who wrote this -- or the veteran himself) ===================================== Looking for the Tilly name I found this on the Census: (Not sure any of it helps explain the name however) Did anyone have someone marrying into the Tilly Family? Maybe you have some clues. Perhaps George Tilly was Capt of a Militia District -- but I don't have any Tax Lists to verify this. 1830 George Tilly 1840 George Tilly 3 males 10-15 1 male 15-20 1 male 50-60 2 females 5-10 1 female 15-20 (wife must be dead) ====================== 1850 1850 United States Federal Census Josiah Tilly Division 78, Taliaferro, 26 GA abt 1824 Georgia Margarett Tilly Division 78, Taliaferro, 26 GA abt 1824 Georgia George Tilly Division 78, Taliaferro, GA abt 1849 Georgia 1860 United States Federal Census John M Tilly Not Stated, Taliaferro, GA 34 1825 Georgia Male $4,000 (real estate) $9,500 (personal estate) Frances A Tilly Not Stated, Taliaferro, GA 29 1830 Georgia Female George P Tilly Not Stated, Taliaferro, GA 9 1850 Georgia Male James B Tilly Not Stated, Taliaferro, GA 3 1856 Georgia Male Margarette Tilly Not Stated, Taliaferro, GA 1 1858 Georgia Female ============== 1870 1870 United States Federal Census Adaline Tilly Not Stated, Taliaferro, GA 22 1847 Georgia Mulatto Female Felix Tilly Not Stated, Taliaferro, GA 8 1861 Georgia Mulatto Male Vincent Tilly Not Stated, Taliaferro
I separated out the Co D....so we could concentrate on these names. 1)Any ideas about how the name might have originated, "Tilly's Rangers"... many times this was a benefactor who helped supply the company with equipment. Was there a Tilly / Tilley family in Taliaferro? 2)Since their term was a relatively short one, it could be they were older (or younger) than the normal soldier. Also they may have later joined another unit. 3)Pension applications help with some of the history of the company. I'd sure like to find out where they actually served. If you find someone on this list, and have not ordered their pension file, Washington Memorial Library in Macon will copy the pension for you....just for the cost of copying and mail it to you. I can give you the e-mail to write to. 3rd Regiment Cavalry (State Guards) Company D The State Guard Cavalry Unit from Taliaferro County, GA was the "Tilly Rangers," commanded by Edmund N. Dear List I maybe away for a few days. Due to a phone call a little after 4 I was told my Uncle Charles Edwards was airlifted to Augusta due to a wreck. Just got in to let you know the news. I came in to get a change of clothes and a little shut eye before heading out again. Uncle Charles is our support in the family and in Taliaferro County. Keep your prayers with us at this time. My husband has been answering my mail since 5 pm today. So if you have recieved anything from me at that time it was him. Thanks Terri Kimbrel Saturday
We only have ONE Bible Record on-line.... Hillman, Josephus (This Bible record was posted by Faye Dyess, and she passed away this year. So we are very grateful that this piece of her work will live on) This one came from : Georgia DAR Records of Elijah Clarke Chapter Compiled 1948-1949 and Faye typed them all and put them on-line http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/gabibles.htm You might check here -- this is the State Bible page, and sometimes we weren't sure what county they should go in. So you might locate a Taliaferro family there as well. Of course, we all wish we would discover a Bible Record for some of our line -- so if you happen to have one, please do share it. It's a wonderful way of preserving it for the future. Again, using the "forms" is a good way to post. In the comments section, you can add additional information to help identify the families. http://www.genrecords.org/gafiles/
You probably have some miscellaneous obituaries from newspapers in your family files. (Maybe even some people you don't even know how they connect. I had some of those in my grandmother's Bible, and posted one, and a researcher was so thrilled to run across it on-line) Even if you don't know the newspaper source, or in some instances, you may not even have a date, it would be helpful to get these on-line. It seems to me from the discussions, that many families have connecting ties through marriage, so someone on this list might even be able to supply the information. An easy way to post is to use our "forms". http://www.genrecords.org/gafiles/ The data you post using the form will automatically go through this mailing list, so everyone will have a chance to see it. Hi Lori. I am not having any luck finding these Taylors in 1910 or 1920 in Taliaferro or any other county. So far I can't fit William A. Taylor into my Taylors but that's not to say he doesn't belong there somewhere. However, he is very elusive! I did find them in the 1930 census. You may already have this but I'll put it in below just in case: 1930 Census, Fulton Co., GA Atlanta Borough Roll 360, p.? (missing) April 4, 1930 Dwelling 22, Family 41 TAYLOR, WILLIAM A? or ?B?, Head, m, w. age 52, Mar., age at 1st mar: 28, b. SC, parents b. GA, occupation: millworker, cotton mill Rosie B., Wife, f, w, age 39, Mar., age at 1st mar: 18, b. GA, parents b. GA James W., Son, m, w, age 20, Single, b. GA, father b. SC, mother b. GA millworker, cotton mill George C., Son, m, w, age 18, Single, b. GA, father b. SC, mother b. GA millworker, cotton mill Grady S., Son, m, w, age 14, Single, b. GA, father b. SC, mother b. GA, clothes presser, pressing shop I'm assuming that James W. was Willis, and George C. was Curtis. It is interesting to note that William Taylor is listed as born in South Carolina. That may or may not be the case as I've seen wrong places of birth given before. But it might be a good clue too. I wish we could see what the earlier census records give as his place of birth. I'll keep on looking and let you know if I find anything else. Rhoda
To Terri Saturday - There you go again with your lying. We have never met and I have never been paid for my research. Where in the name of heaven did you dream up those two lies? Do send me a list of the names of people whom you claim I charged for research! I certainly will contact them (even though none exist). Let's get some things straight. You have never assisted/helped me with my book, you have never had a conversation with me. Don't use my name in any of your writings, or online, or conversations claiming to have helped/assisted me, to know me, or whatever. Cease your lies about me now as my family and will not stand for this libel and slander. Mikki Martin
Hi Julie. This is from "Rest in Peace A Cemetery census of Taliaferro County, Georgia" Researched and Compiled by Wiley B. Jones: "Reid James Reid - 1778-1856 Rebecca Duke Reid - 1791-1837 consort of James Reid Abner Simonton - died 1840? aged 2 yr?? This is carved on a slate type field stone" Wiley also stated the following: "There is evidence that James Reid's father, Ajonadab Reid is also buried here in an unmarked grave. The Reid plot is located about one mile southwest of the Malcom Place Road identified as Road #33 on the county map. . . " Hope this helps a little. Rhoda
>>William Chesley TAYLOR 1852-1920 who in 1879 married Sallie DARRACOTT1859-1939 (Rhoda?)>> Hi Bruce. It's nice to be in touch with you again. Yes, William Chesley Taylor was my grandfather. He was born Jan. 26, 1852, Taliaferro Co. and died May 18, 1919, son of Robert S. Taylor and Sarah Olivia Bristow. He is buried at Bethany Cemetery, Greene Co. but his tombstone is missing. He was Tax Receiver for Taliaferro Co. 1887-1889. William C. Taylor married (1) Arabella Peek, Jan. 12, 1875 in Taliaferro Co. She was daughter of Richard D.L. Peek and Marian Antoinette M. Swain. Arabella died Aug. 31, 1879 in Taliaferro Co. and is also buried at Bethany (obituary). No tombstone can be found for her either. There was one child of this marriage - Robert Lovell Taylor. William C. Taylor married (2) Sarah Elizabeth Darracott (my grandmother), Oct. 2, 1879 in Taliaferro Co. She was born April 13, 1859, daughter of John W. Darracott and Susan Ann Chapman. Grandma Sallie died Sept. 27, 1936, and is buried in the Crawfordville Baptist Cemetery. They had a large family of children, including my father, John Alonzo "Lonnie" Taylor.
Is anyone working this family? They were in Taliaferro County before the Civil War. I descend through one of their daughters. I have a notation that James and Rebecca, plus James's father, Ajonadab/John Dabney Reid, and a grandson, Abner Simonton, are buried alongside each other in a cemetery but I don't know which one. It could even be in someone's pasture! I'd love to exchange information... Another update.. I am pulling the Lunceford information away from my research. I do not wish to upset the family anymore. I do realize that Mikki has completed many years with paid research within her history. She is respected by many family members that I have talked with. I am sorry if I ever upset the family. I met her a few years ago and asked her many questions on the family. Just has she has with me and we exchanged common cousin connections I am sorry if this has ever been a conflict. Mikki Yes I visit weekly to Taliaferro County and yes gather stories that I bring the reader into each story. I try to help all those at the court house to find their loved ones I also help the ones I find in the cemeteries to locate their loved ones. I also reply to each one of my e-mails that is sent to my address good or bad, to the best of my abilities. I have also volunteered my time for this sight. I don't not know what I have done to ever upset you. I have notified the Advocate about my stories where they come from and whom the story came from as well and sorry if I upset you there. I do not get paid for any of my research. I do not get paid for my articles. I do not get paid for my stories. I know your book has sold with some, some have told me so. But others have not. I have carried and remain to carry books I have purchased through the years including Shannon Dale Byrd's latest book and Wiley Jones latest before he passed on. He has been a great friend as well. I work with his family as well. Rhoda Fone I do believe has been the longest in the line of volunteer work. She has been kind to all that has written. Sorry if I ever upset anyone out there. The history is so great and being approached by each time I go saying they love the stories they read and I tell them all they are just stories. They all tell me to keep it up, many are never heard some only the elders say. My prayers are with you too Hope your Holidays are special Terri Kimbrel Saturday
For Jim Cary on the Crawfordville Farmer's Alliance -- Of course we are just guessing whose initials they are in the minutes of the Farmer's Alliance, but W.C. Taylor could be: William Chesley TAYLOR 1852-1920 who in 1879 married Sallie DARRACOTT 1859-1939 (Rhoda?) W.C. Chapman could be William C. Chapman ca. 1833, Son of John Hart Chapman S.W. Chapman could be Samuel Whatley Chapman 1819-1892 T.L. and W.C. could be Samuel Whatley's sons Thomas Lyne 1845-1905 and William Colclough Chapman 1866 - 1946. J.S. Chapman could be John Samuel b. 1832 and W.T. Could be my wife's uncle, William T. Chapman, b. 1863. Or not. bruce
Hi Lori. I am a Taylor of Taliaferro and have a good deal of material on them. Although I was born and raised in Greensboro, my father was born and raised in Taliaferro and all of my patenal lines were there from it's beginning. I will check my files and get back to you later today. Sincerely, Rhoda
