This cemetery information is another example of how very important Wiley Jones's work was back in 1984. We can all be grateful for his diligence in tracking down these cemeteries in Taliaferro County. I wonder if this site could even be found today? Does anyone know? I sure would like to know the connection between Swann family and Billingslea. And were there other graves there as well? BILLINGSLEA-SWANN This site is located approximately one mile west of S2182 or the Level Hill-Sandy Cross Road about one mile north of the cross roads in Sandy Cross on land belonging to Continental Can Company. There is a field road cut out by the timber company that passes by the cemetery but it is now almost impassable by vehicle. The cemetery is in a clump of trees that were left when the land was recently clear cut but the graves were disturbed (1984) Martha Billingslea 1777-1836 John W. (Tombstone inscription, Crawfordville Baptist Cemetery). He immigrated to the United States from the port of Bremen, arriving in New York City, 28 August 1848. (Info. provided by Cousin Ralph W. Golucke, Crawfordville, GA, now deceased.) Ive not found him in the 1850 census and it is unclear just when he arrived in Wilkes Co., but would be before August 1854 when he married the first time. He lived first in Washington, GA where his occupation was cabinet maker but by 1880 he is found in Crawfordville. In 1900, Edmund and his second wife were living in Taliaferro Co. with their son, Charles H. Golucke. Edmond is buried at Crawfordville Baptist Cemetery beside his 2nd wife, Leonora Sabina (Wingfield) Golucke. Edmond Golucke married (1): to Cornelia Susan Wingfield, 23 August 1854, Wilkes Co., Georgia, born 21 Feb. 1822, Wilkes Co., died 21 Oct. 1862, Wilkes Co. She was daughter of James Nelson Wingfield and Susan Gordon. Cornelia is buried in Resthaven Cemetery, Washington Ga. In May of 1991, while visiting in Washington, Georgia, I was determined to find the grave of Cornelia. She was not listed in the cemetery book by F. M. & Nell H. Newsome but I felt certain she must have been buried at Resthaven Cemetery with other members of the Wingfield family. My cousin, Jane Newsome, was exceptionally patient and took me to Resthaven Cemetery two days in a row where we finally discovered Cornelias grave. What we found was one of those above the ground graves, rusty and moss-covered, that most people had overlooked because the inscription was not visible. Jane was wonderful in helping to scrape, powder, and brush, even as she kept a watchful eye on the thunder storm that was brewing. It was a lot of work but very exciting to find the inscription below. "In Memory of Cornelia S. Golucke Wife of Edmond Golucke and daughter of James and Susan Wingfield "She was born on the 21st of February 1822, and died on the 21st of October 1862 "She was a devoted wife and mother, a dutiful daughter, kind and affectionate sister and a sincere steadfast friend to her family her death has caused a vacancy which is uncomparable; they have the consolation though they are left to mourn her loss, she has only passed through the land of the dead to live through a happy and unending eternity. "In the midst of life we are in death. Farewell dear Cornelia, until we meet in Heaven " Children of Edmond and Cornelia: 1. Susan Gordon Golucke, b. 10 Dec. 1855, d. ca. 1873. 2. Married Ida Mae Lanneau, 28 Dec. 1887, Taliaferro, Co., daughter of Basil M. Lanneau and Mary E. Bird. Thank you, Terry. I do have a little bit to add to what you posted. George Franklin Bristow left a will in Taliaferro County, (Will Rec. B, p. 154) dated Dec. 21, 1883, prob. 10 June 1886, naming his brother Abner N. Bristow, dec'd, and Abner's wife, Polly Ann. Other brothers and sisters are mentioned but not named. George F. Bristow never married. He is buried at Crawfordville Baptist Cemetery. (Abner Nash Bristow and his wife Polly Ann (Jordan) Bristow moved to Alabama where he died Feb. 12, 1875.) John Thomas Bristow was born Oct. 7, 1818, and died May 25, 1891, Pike (now Bullock) Co., AL (buried in the Edwards Cemetery). He was married (1) to Mary Ward Edwards, Sept. 15, 1847, Taliaferro Co., and (2) Rebecca Edwards after 1856. As you know, Mary Ward and Rebecca Edwards were daughters of Thomas Edwards, brother of your Etheldred Edwards. George Franklin and John Thomas Bristow were brothers of my great-grandmother, Sarah Olivia (Bristow) Taylor. I will give more Bristow information very soon. Rhoda

I heard from Wiley Jones' sister and they do have a few of his Cemetery books left. So I wanted to pass this info along as well as mention a couple of his other books. We have the index to the cemetery book on-line: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/taliaferro/cemeteries/indxwiley.txt You can see that he covered all the cemeteries in Taliaferro County that he was aware of. Many of those are probably in worse condition today, and even more difficult to locate. If you're interested just write me a note, and I'll send her address to you privately. The facts, as detailed by our correspondent, are: Mr. Columbus Reese came to the village in the afternoon, (the same man who was tried soon after the war at Washington, Wilkes county, by a court martial, for killing a negro,) and began to drink, as is his custom. It was not long before he began a quarrel with Mr. Thos. Edwards, a quiet, peaceable man, though in the habit of drinking sometimes; yet he was never known to injure any one, and was much thought of in the community. The quarrel continued for a few moments, when Edwards, turning to walk away, Reese threatened to shoot him, having drawn a pistol in his hand. Edwards was unarmed and had made no threats or any demonstrations. When the threat was made he (Edwards) fronted Reese, opening his shirt, and, as a brave man will do, told him to shoot. Reese, standing on his feet (unclear), shot, the ball entering Edwards' breast near the heart. Edwards fell upon the ground, and in a few moments had breathed his last. Reese remained in town for some hours, walking the streets and threatening to kill any man who attempted to arrest him. He is still at large, and up to this hour no efforts have been made for his arrest. [Augusta Constitutionalist] I am indebted to my cousin, Charlotte Vaughn, another descendant of the second "Dred" Edwards, for this article and for the reward poster below. This news article makes no mention of the cause of the quarrel, but John Stone's oral tradition was at least partly correct: It was over Thomas's kindness to and defense of a young black man. We have already seen some evidence that the Edwards family did not enthusiastically support the Civil War, even though, like Thomas Jefferson of Virginia, they were slave holders. This may seem too idealistic, but perhaps our Thomas J. Edwards understood the wrongness of treating blacks as they were treated in the South, both during slavery and after it ended. After all, what was he doing going into a saloon in Crawfordville, Ga., the Vice-Capitol of the South, with a young black man as a friend and buying him some candy just over four years after the Civil War ended? Now I will give a complementary perspective on Thomas J.'s murder from a different source. In the mid 1990's, Charlotte Vaughn, I, and my wife Louise, went to Nashville, Tenn. to interview Neva Portwood Patrick, then in her mid 90s, about our ancestors, all of whom (back to, but not including, Thomas) she knew personally. According to the notes I made at the time on what she said about Thomas and his murder, Neva told us, "Thomas drank like everything. He had a colored boy with him in the tavern. He bought the boy some candy. Reese called him a 'Nigger lover,' and said 'I could just shoot your heart out.' At that point, Thomas opened his shirt and was shot." The Governor of Georgia was so outraged over the murder of Thomas J. Edwards that he offered the following thousand dollar reward, the second listed below, for the capture of his killer: Monday August 2nd 1869 Executive Department Atlanta Georgia August 2nd, 1869 Ordered: That the Secretary of State record and issue a Proclamation offering a Reward of One Thousand Dollars for the apprehension of and delivery to any Sheriff of this State, with proof sufficient to convict C. C. Reese, charged with the murder of Thomas Edwards, of the county of Taliaferro, on the 24th day of July 1869 Rufus B. Bullock Governor By the Governor R. Paul Lester } Secy. Ex. Dept =============== The following short item or abstract from a longer article, originally published on Wed. June 14, 1871, appears in a volume of abstracts from the Baldwin County Union Recorder, 1870-1877, p. 74. TO HANG Charles C. Reese, who killed a man named Edwards in Taliaferro County last year, has been sentenced to be hung in Crawfordville on the 4th of next August. Additional Comments: Columbus "Lum" Reese, Thomas's murderer, was eventually captured, tried, and convicted. From Neva Portwood Patrick I learned that this trial was in Hancock County (Sparta), Ga., and that none other than Alexander H. Stephens himself, who was indeed a close friend of the Edwards family, was the prosecuting attorney. Lum Reese seems to have been a very bitter Confederate veteran from Warren County, Ga. In the 1860 Census, a C. C. Reese, age 23, was listed as living in Warren County. He served as an infantryman, a Private in Company B of Georgia's 48th Regiment. My cousin, "Coot" Johnson, told me that Lum Reese and Thomas J. Edwards actually were very close personal friends, and that after he shot Thomas, Lum said, "My God, I have just killed my best friend." Mrs. Mary Edwards Died Tuesday Morning [Oct 3 1916] Mrs. Mary Edwards, widow of Thos Edwards, died at 8:00 Tuesday morning, after an illness of several months. Mrs. Edwards' death was a great shock to her many friends and relatives, although it had been known fro some time that she could not very long survive. She was 84 years old, and had been a member of the Baptist church since early childhood. She was a kind Christian woman, a good neighbor and friend, and her death will be a great loss to the community in which she had lived. Mrs. Edwards is survived by four children: Messrs. G.T., B.L., and E. Edwards and Mrs. R.T. Jones, together with a large number of other relatives, all of whom have the sympathy of the entire community in their sad bereavement. The funeral and burial occurred at Sandy Cross Baptist church on Wednesday morning. Rev. George C. Steed conducting the services in the midst of a large concourse of friends and relatives. I saw this on the Muscogee List and thought it was a fun idea for sharing some thoughts about the Holidays and families. (Although I don't have anyone in Taliaferro County, I'm giving my own "wish" as an example) It is fun imagining a family gathering and who may have been around the table, and what they would have talked about. Over the river, through the woods to ________________ house you go , "Whose house would you go to?" I would love to visit in the home of my g-grandparents, Willis and Nicey Martin Jinks at the old home place southwest of Butler (Taylor Co) I would ask if Willis and Wilborn Jinks were indeed brothers and if their father was William Jinks....and who their mother was ! Also how they all related to the Jinks line in Butts County! Since Willis died in April 1885, I'd want my visit to be Christmas 1884....and also want to hear the discussion of the Jinks families who were planning to move to Texas around 1886. My grandmother, Winnie Virginia Jinks Ruffin, probably never returned to see her home again. Her mother, Nicey Martin Jinks, probably lived until 1891, so there were many years when they would have been thinking of one another at Christmas time. There would have been a house full of grandchildren, although my own father wasn't born until after they moved to Texas. Hopefully there would be a letter from their oldest daughter, Elizabeth, who married Lucius C. Franklin and moved to Mississippi soon afterwards in 1852. Elizabeth died in April 25th 1935, age 98 yrs 2 mo 13 d., so I'm sure her thoughts would have been on Christmas in Taylor County many, many years. Virginia

After his parents died when he was fifteen, Stephens went to live with an uncle in Warren County. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1832 and worked for two years as a schoolteacher. He then studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1834. Entering politics in 1836, he denounced nullification and protested tactics used against abolitionists. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1843 and supported the annexation of Texas. He joined the Democratic Party in order to support Daniel Webster. Moderately proslavery, Stephens opposed secession and retired from Congress in 1859. He was elected in both 1861 and 1862 Vice President of the Confederate States, though he was often at odds with Jefferson Davis. He was arrested by Union soldiers after Appomattox and was confined to Fort Warren in Boston until October 12, 1865. When he returned to Georgia, Stephens advocated reconciliation and was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1866, but was denied his seat. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1873 to 1882. Stephens wrote Constitutional View of the Late War Between the States in two volumes (1868-1870). The section of Alexander Stephens's diary printed in this volume is from Recollections of Alexander H. Stephens: His Diary (1910). Merry Christmas!
After viewing the wonderful addition to the Taliaferro County records I thought I would tell you about a few names found on the signatures found on the Will of James Lyle, posted by Rem Blanchard Edwards Jr. George Franklin Bristow, born March 15, 1825 was named Executor in my 3rd great grandfather Etheldred Edwards' will; he was an attorney who studied law with Alexander H. Stephens, and brother to Etheldred's nephew, John Thomas Bristow. John Thomas Bristow married Mary Ward Edwards. Mary was the daughter to Etheldred's brother Thomas. George and John were two of a total of seven children born to Chesley Bristow and Martha Patsy Harris. (Rhoda shared a little of this history as well as Josie Bird. Along with other court house records.) Also stated in Josie's notes George was post master in 1865. He was found serving as a private in the Confederate 55 Virginia Infantry. He died on April 01, 1886. Ask Rhoda Taylor Fone for additional history of the Bristows. Such history is found living within those family members. Another name found in James Lyle's will was Absolom Rhodes, born 1822. He married Martha S. Chapman in Taliaferro County on January 04, 1844. Bet. January 06, 1860 - February 16, 1864 he was the Sheriff of Taliaferro County and listed in the census of 1850 - 1870, living next door to his brother John in the city of Crawfordville. Absolom and John were two sons born to John Rhodes and Nancy McGinty. Located in Wiley Jones' book "Rest in Peace" John, wife Nancy with son Absolom are buried in the Rhodes Family Cemetery, off of US Highway 278. (For even more history on this family check with Rhoda Taylor Fone) For the last name listed in James Lyle's Will I will state a few notes from Rhoda Taylor Fone (John Rhodes, born July 28, 1828-Feb. 8, 1887. I believe this to be John Rhodes, Jr. who married (1) Louisa Wynn, Dec. 21, 1848, Taliaferro Co., and (2) Cornelia Mildred Gunn, April 3, 1851. He is listed in the 1850 census as age 21, in 1860, age 31, in 1870 age 44, in 1880 age 50. He left a will in Taliaferro Co. dated Dec. 15, 1885, probated April 18, 1887. This is the John Rhodes found living next door to his brother Absolom Rhodes John can be found in the Chapman-Gunn Cemetery. He lived until February 08, 1887. Hope this helps a researcher while looking more into records found within the Court house walls and cemeteries of Taliaferro County. Terri Kimbrel Saturday
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all. (And whatever holiday greetings are appropriate for other religions or groups represented on the list. ) As you can see, I am not politically correct. As list list administrator I usually can keep a low profile, but I must come to the list and ask that all of you keep the Spirit of the Season (All year 'round). This list has existed in peace and harmony for many years. I hope to keep it that way. In order to do so, I must insist that your personal differences be handled one on one and not on the list. I do not have time nor do I have the desire to moderate this list. For those of you who don't know that term, if means that I can choose to review each post and decide whether it is appropriate. I sure do not want to have to remove anyone from the list! Please help me keep from doing that. You are all great researchers and I have learned a lot from you. To those who have been insulted on the list, I apologise. To the rest of you, I apologise that you have been subjected to these outbursts. To the target(s) of the attacks, I apologise. To those making the charges, I am taking no side in the issue since I do not know the facts .... nor do I want to. I am not a party to this fight nor should be the rest of the list. Please, in the spirit of the season, let the attacks and responses end now. Thanks for the cooperiation that I am sure that I will get on this matter. -- Thomas (Tom) Hammack, Jr. Gulfport, Mississippi W4WLF
