Edwards remb@utk.edu January 20, 2005, 3:20 pm The Advocate Democrat The Advocate Democrat Tuesday, February 27, 1931 In Memory of Mrs. R.B. Edwards With deep sorrow and a real sense of the great loss our county has sustained, we record the death of Mrs. Rem B. Edwards on Friday evening, February 20th. Mrs. Edwards was the second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Gee. She was born in Crawfordville December 2, 1893. She attended Stephens High School and completed her education at Chicora College in South Carolina. She was married to Mr. Rem B. Edwards Dec 31st 1920, and to this happy union was intrusted a lovely little daughter, Caroline. Mrs. Edwards was rich in friends who were attracted to her by her genuine worth. One felt that back of this outward life so unselfish and beautiful, there was a hidden life, a life hid with Christ in God. In early girlhood she followed the injunctions of her Saviour, "See first the Kingdom of God," by giving her heart to Him through faith in Jesus and united with the Presbyterian Church. In this faith she remained a loyal and devoted follower of her Christ and so it seemed fitting that, as the shadows of day were falling, the Master whom she loved and had faithfully served should have called her from the shadows of time to the light and joy of eternity. In the presence of a large concourse of sorrowing relatives her remains were laid to rest in the Crawfordville cemetery Sunday, February 22nd. Rev. Geo C. Steed, paster of the Crawfordville Baptist Church assisted her pastor, Rev. A.G. McInnis, in these last sad rites. I have been given a series of newspaper obits (in .jpg format)... and I wondered if anyone would have time to help me type them up into text format. I would send you the .jpg file by e-mail, and then you could type it up for us. Let me know if you would be willing to help with this. Thanks. Virginia Crilley
Virginia. I made a bad mistake in my previous message. Pearson B. Monk did not marry the widow of William Bell. It looks like he married, as his second wife, Sarah W. Bell, daughter of Lucy and Joshua Bell, and SISTER of William Bell, not his widow. I just checked some of Wiley Jones cemetery records and found that there is a small cemetery near Liberty Hall where William Bell is buried - died Apr. 11, 1859, and his wife Sallie Bell also buried there, died March 7, 1959. I then realized I had the wrong Sarah Bell married to Pearson B. Monk and checked further. I sincerely apologize for posting the incorrect information. Now you all know my secret - I'm far from perfect! Rhoda
Below is some info. on the Monks buried at Robinson. Robert C. Monk was born April 1869, died 1927, son of Merrell T. Monk and Celestia Bell. He married Annie C. Gunn, 6 May 1888, Taliaferro Co. Annie Gunn Monk, wife of Robert C. Monk, was born Nov. 1870, died 1939, daughter of William Henry Gunn and Ella Amanda Taylor (sister of my grandfather, William Chesley Taylor). Raymond C. Monk, son of Robert C. & Annie (Gunn) Monk, born April 1899, died Nov. 15, 1941. Married Ruth Lee Andrews. Ruth L. Monk, born October 1896, died 1964, wife of Raymond C. Monk. Information from Laura Lee Crawford (now deceased) shows that she was Ruth Lee Andrews, daughter of Robert Lee Andrews and Aseneth "Zena" King. Ruth and Laura Lee were cousins. Merrell T. Monk, born 1919, died 1936, son of Raymond C. and Ruth Lee (Andrews) Monk. Robert C. & Annie (Gunn) Monk had another son, Robert Guy Monk, b. Virignia. I have some Monk info. as they are connected to my Taylors through marriage. But I'm confused about this Martha 1818-1855 "consort of Robert B. Monk." I'm thinking that the name "Robert" might be a mistake. My records show Pearson B. Monk was married to a Martha Watts and this Martha was born about 1818 and died before Sept. 2, 1855 when Pearson remarried to Sarah (Edwards) Bell, widow of William Bell. (William Bell and Sarah Edwards were married in Taliaferro Co. Jan. 15, 1850.) So, it's my theory right now that this Martha, buried in the Monk Cemetery, was actually wife of Pearson B. Monk and not Robert B. Monk. Hopefully someone else can let us know if this is correct or not. Rhoda
After I posted the small Monk Family cemetery, I had a response from someone who researches the Monk family buried in Robinson Baptist Church Cemetery. Does anyone know how theses burials relate? There weren't any directions to the Robinson Baptist Church....can someone help me with those? Didn't know if it was near the Monk Family Cemetery ....which is in Crawfordville near the Railroad. Just around this bend is a relatively good field road to the west. The cemetery is about 1 mile down this field road on the right.

Edwards remb@utk.edu January 3, 2005, 7:57 pm ADVOCATE DEMOCRAT ADVOCATE DEMOCRAT April 5, 1935 MR. REM B. EDWARDS [SR.] DIES MONDAY NIGHT While he had not enjoyed robust health in several months the announcement Monday night of the sudden death of Mr. Rem B. Edwards [Sr.] was indeed a shock to those learning of it, and as the news spread throughout the county increased shock and sorrow was occasioned by the sad intelligence. He had a large family connection and was held in the highest esteem by all who knew him. He died early in the night, his immediate family being at the time the only ones in the home. Mr. Edwards on December 31, 1920, married Miss Carolyne Gee, who died several years ago leaving one daughter, Carolyn. About three years ago he married Miss. Opal Vickers, of Flovilla, Ga., who, with a small son, Rem Jr., survives him. Besides him immediate family he is survived by his father, Mr. G. T. Edwards, one brother, Rev. James T. Edwards, of Bloxom, Va., and two sisters, Mrs. Henry G. Moore and Mrs. C. Phelps, of this place. He was prominently connected in the county in a business way, having served as postmaster of Crawfordville for several terms, and occupying that office under appointment from the present National Administration at the time of his death. He was, besides, engaged in farming, operating a ginnery and associated with his father in the mercantile business, enjoying the implicit confidence of all with whom he had business dealings. While he was reticent of speech, he was of a jovial disposition and his every utterance was characterized by sincerity. He was alert and active in the best interests of his town and county and generous with his time and means in the support of any movement for the betterment of their condition. His going is a distinct loss. Being one of the first three young men leaving the country in answer to the call of his country in the World War [I], it was fitting that his casket was borne to its resting place draped in his countrys colors, emblematic of his loyalty and patriotism. The pall bearers were Messrs. R. R. Gunn, of Athens, Miles Nash, of Milledgeville, E. T. Portwood, C. Philps, Henry G. Moore and Troy Vickers, of this place, all brothers-in-law of the deceased. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. George C. Steed, pastor of the Church of which he was a member, assisted by Rev. A. G. McInnis, pastor of the Crawfordville Presbyterian church. \ His grave was banked with an unusual number of most beautiful floral offerings, bespeaking the affection and high esteem in which he was held. Cross posted to Greene, Taliaferro, Oglethorpe, Wilkes County, Georgia lists. TO: Pollard list members researching in Georgia and Virginia. Can any of the Pollards listed in the two previous messages about Pollards in Georgia be traced back to early Greene, Taliaferro, Oglethorpe, or Wilkes County, Georgia??? To William Pollard m. Jane Thompson Virginia??? My lineage comes from James Edmonds m. Sarah Pollard in Wilkes County, Georgia, in 1849. They are buried in the cemetery at Rayle, Wilkes County, Georgia, that has gone by several differnent names including the Silvey Cemetery. He died in late 1900. James Edmonds' (sometimes spelled with a "U" and other ways0 oldest sister married Dolphford (spelled various ways) Silvey. After pieceing together bits and pieces of information over these several Georgia counties, I think her parents were Seaborn Pollard, Sr. and Sarah M. _?_ who were members of Bethesda Baptist Church in eastern Greene County, Georgia. I have also identified some brothers and sister for Sarah Pollard Edmonds. I think that Seaborn Pollard, Sr. died in Taliaferro County, Georgia, sometimes bwetween 1840-50. His widow and some of the family later moved to the Greensboror area of Greene County and one, it appears, slipped over in to Oglethorpe County. Seaborn Pollard, Sr. is supposed to have been a son of this William Pollard Rev. Sol. from Virgninia. My own research only goes back to Seaborn Pollard, Sr. m. Sarah M. _?_. The next connection I have picked up from various researchers on the internet. Is anybody else on the list related to this line??? I have finished transcribing the minutes of the Farmers Alliance and I'm getting ready to post the information to the archives. I would like to include as much information on these individuals as I can before I post it, especially if they were Civil War Veterans. I have no doubt that many of these men came home to farms and families that were in chaos. I have some data from Teri Saturday (Thanks Teri) and I received an email from another party that I have somehow deleted, so if you're reading this, please resend your information and accept my apology. Sorry -- wrong list! I hit the wrong button...and this was meant for Taylor county. Doesn't have anything at all to do with Taliaferro. ============================== http://www.rootsweb.com/~gatchgs/tchgphoto.htm Scroll about 1/2 down and take a good look at the Confederate Veterans' Photo -- taken at the Butler Courthouse. This was first printed in the Nov 1997 Taylor Tracer, but without any identification.
http://www.rootsweb.com/~gatchgs/tchgphoto.htm Scroll about 1/2 down and take a good look at the Confederate Veterans' Photo -- taken at the Butler Courthouse. This was first printed in the Nov 1997 Taylor Tracer, but without any identification. In the same Taylor Tracer, there were several articles about the Reynolds Confederate Veterans. I was hoping if we paid more attention to the photo and we might make some guesses as to when it was taken. Many times they took photos like this when the Confederate Monument was dedicated. http://www.rootsweb.com/~gataylor/monu.htm This was 1911 --- but I think the photo was earlier than this. If we could get just ONE person identified, it would help us date the photo.... Many of the faces are very distinctive -- so let's work at this a little. Rhoda submitted some amazing Confederate letters..... John M. Tilley. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/taliaferro/military.html http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/taliaferro/military/civilwar/letters/gmt143tilley.txt John M. Tilley served in Co. D, 15th GA Infantry (Stephens Home Guards) . He was killed on Garnett's Farm near Richmond, VA on June 27, 1862. The last letter in this group was just before that battle. I know you'll find them so interesting, and especially if you did have an ancestor who also served in that unit. http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/taliaferro/military/civilwar/rosters/cod15.txt This roster is on-line . Dr. Edwards did an extensive study on this Company in regard to James Lyle. http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/taliaferro/military/civilwar/other/lyle.txt All of these combine to make some very interesting reading and we'd love to hear from others whose ancestors served in this unit.
