Edwards remb@utk.edu January 23, 2005, 3:25 pm Crawfordville Advocate Democrat, December 6, 1957 DR. JAMES T. EDWARDS DIES The death of Dr. James T. Edwards on November 12th not only brought sorrow to his family but to friends not to be numbered. A native of Taliaferro Co., Georgia, he was the son of the late George T. and Martha Lyle Edwards of Crawfordville. During his years at Mercer, 1910 to 1914, from which school he received his AB degree, he was ordained into the ministry at the Sandy Cross Baptist Church six miles from Crawfordville. He also held a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Newton Theological Institute, Boston, Mass; also, the degree of Doctor of Sacred Theology from the Harvard Divinity School. Pastorates included Danielson, Conn., Bethel Baptist Church in Accomac County, First Baptist Church in Rock Hill, S.C. before taking the pastorate of The Baptist Church in Culpepper. He resigned as pastor of the Culpepper Church in 1947 to take full time duties as superintendent of the Virginia Baptist Home for elderly people which now has 200 residents and total assets of one and one- half million dollars. In an interview with the Star Exponent several years ago, Dr. Edwards described the home as a climax of his career and the fulfillment of a dream. It was during his pastorate at Culpepper that he became convinced of the need of and practicability of such an institution. This institution has, since its opening in 1945, been sponsored by the Virginia Baptist General Association. Dr. Edwards had stated his wish to retire about a year ago but had been persuaded by the board of directors to remain until a suitable person could be found to succeed him. His resignation was to have become effective January 1st when Dr. F. Bernard LeSueur would assume his duties, but due to Dr. Edwards' death, Rev. LeSueur took over immediately. 3. Mikki wrote to me with this question, and I hoped someone on the list might have an answer: ==================== Just looking at the obit on Herschel V. BEAZLEY, and I see where he was cremated. He has a military marker at Crawfordville Baptist Church Cemetery. I was wondering if anyone knew whether his ashes were buried at the cemetery or is this marker just a cenotaph? Marker reads: HERSCHEL V. BEAZLEY SGT US ARMY WORLD WAR II APR 16 1925 NOV 28 1998 734TH RAILWAY OPERATIONS BATTALION ============ obituary========= The Atlanta Constitution, December 1, 1998 [photo caption: "Herschel Beazley, a World War II veteran, worked 44 years as a railroad agent, retiring in 1985 from CSX."] Herschel Beazley, 73, chief doorkeeper at state Senate By Joel Groover STAFF WRITER Herschel Beazley had two essential qualities for chief doorkeeper at the Georgia Senate: a strong voice and an even temper. When it came time to convene the Senate for a vote, Mr. Beazley strolled the halls of the Capitol shouting, "Voting!" to the noisy crowds. The 73-year-old Atlanta resident - who kept the main door at the Senate from 1985 to 1998 - was an expert at getting senators to their seats while keeping everybody else out in the hall, said Secretary of the Senate Frank Eldridge. "It can be very frustrating, but he was always very calm," he said. The memorial service for Mr. Beazley, who died of cardiac arrest Saturday at St. Luke's Hospital in Jacksonville, was today at A.S. Turner & Sons. The body was cremated. Another memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Crawfordville Baptist Church. Mr. Beazley, a World War II veteran, worked 44 years as a railroad agent, retiring in 1985 from CSX, before he began working at the Senate. He befriended many senators and staffers and enjoyed briefing volunteer doorkeepers on their responsibilities, said his wife, Mary W. Beazley of Atlanta. Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Herschel V. Beazley Jr. of Americus and Ben W. Beazley of Smyrna; a sister, Nell V. Rhodes of Cedartown; and two grandsons. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Egleston Children's Hospital, 1405 Clifton Road N.E., Atlanta, GA 30322.

    1. Monk Cemetery
    2. Virginia Crilley
    3. I just heard from a Monk Family researcher, so I have more details to add. However, the big question is about: Martha Monk 1818-1855 consort of Robert B. Monk ***Is this actually on the tombstone?*** (I'm guessing it is because I doubt if a surveyor would use that phrase) Robert Monk *** From Wiley's book, I'm not sure if he was told about Robert Monk being buried there.... OR if there is actually a tombstone. The Monk plot is located about 50 yards east of the old Collier House now owned and occupied by Rev. Kenny Schuff and family on Highway 47 in the city of Crawfordville about 150 yards north of the Georgia Railroad. (1984) Does anyone live in Crawfordville who might be able to find out the answer? Or even take a photo of the tombstone? (Or do you know anyone who might do this for us?) Apparently, Monk family researchers believe that this Martha Monk is the wife of Person Bright Monk who married Sarah W. Bell after Martha died. But if the old tombstone says "consort of Robert B. Monk" -- I would tend to believe it is true! Martha and Person apparently did have a son, Robert Monk, though. Isn't this fun?! Virginia
