Hi Jim. The Crawfordville paper is on microfilm at the University of Georgia Library in Athens. Rhoda

J. C. RHODES KILLED BY BROTHER-IN-LAW Mr. J. C. Rhodes was shot and almost instantly killed last Thursday evening by Mr. Albert Taylor, his brother-in-law. The killing occurred at the home of Mr. W. R. Taylor in Greene county, where Mr. Albert Taylor makes his home. A coroner's inquest was held Thursday night and the verdict of the jury was that the killing was justifiable. The evidence showed that Mr. Taylor shot in self defense, Mr. Rhodes having attempted to shoot him. The killing is very much deplored by a host of friends on both sides. Mr. Rhodes was one of the best known and most highly esteemed citizens of Taliaferro county. He was a very progressive and successful farmer, and was a leader in the community. He numbered his friends by his acquaintances, and his untimely death has caused much sadness throughout the county. Mr. Taylor is also well known and highly esteemed in this county, although he makes his home in Greene. Mr. Rhodes was laid to rest in the Margaret's Grove cemetery Thursday afternoon, after funeral services conducted by Rev. M. J. Bruce. Of the immediate family he is survived by his wife and seven children and several brothers and sisters all of whom have the sympathy of everyone in their bereavement. Additional Comments: John Courtney Rhodes, Sr., born Oct. 3, 1875, Taliaferro Co., GA, died 23 Aug. 1917, Taliaferro Co, son of Reuben B. Rhodes and Letitia Courtney. Married Dec. 9, 1896, Taliaferro Co., to Mary Ruth Taylor born Oct. 20, 1877, Taliaferro Co., died Nov. 16, 1957, Taliaferro Co., daughter of William R. Taylor and Roberta Moore. Both buried at Margaret's Grove Cemetery, Taliaferro Co. GA. Albert Taylor was born 1887, died 1970 and was brother of Ruth Taylor, wife of John Courtney Rhodes. He married January 12, 1913 to Annie Ruby Taylor, daughter of William Chesley Taylor and Sarah Elizabeth Darracott. (Ruby was sister of my father, John Alonzo "Lonnie" Taylor.) Albert Taylor is buried at Margaret's Grove and although we think Aunt Ruby is buried in Crawfordville, there is no marker. Aunt Ruby was deceased well before the date of the shooting. I am still looking for information on Newton Chapman who died in July 1836, Talbot Co while a private in the Volunteer infantry from Taliaferro. We have suspected that the he was son of Thomas and Sarah (Hart) Chapman of Taliaferro but have no proof. It is interesting that he died at James Veazey's residence as James Veazey married Susannah/Susan Hart, sister of Sarah (Hart) Chapman. Marriages and Obituaries From Early Georgia Newspapers, abstracted by the late Judge Folks Huxford, F.A.S.G. "On the 12th inst. at JAMES VEAZEY'S residence in Talbot County, MR. NEWTON CHAPMAN, a private in the Volunteer Infantry from Taliaferro County. He died among strangers but was rendered every attention. Was buried on the 13th with full military honors by the Talbot Guards. July 26, 1836." Any clues will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Rhoda

Hi. Bruce. You asked the following question: <<Okay, Rhoda. What is a gin maker? Did he make the devil's brew or cotton gins?>> In this case it was cotton gin. Notice that in 1880 his occupation is listed as "cotton gin maker." I'm sure there were plenty of guys around at the time that wished it was the other kind of gin. <g> Great to hear from you again! Intending this will to be a final disposition of my estate I hereby revoke all wills heretofore made by me. Item 2nd. I wish my Executor to pay my just debts, among which the sum of Eighty dollars due TO MY NEPHEW STEPHEN JACKSON of Burke County. Item 3rd. The negroes, Tom, Washington, Scharlate, Sam, Caroline, Becca, and her children, William, Frank, Mosi [?], and Isabel; Fannie, and her children, John and an infant Adam, Julia ann[?] and her children Harriet, and an infant and five hundred fifty dollars are trust property belonging at my death to my THREE OLDEST CHILDREN, viz, ARTHUR C. DAVIDSON, MARY D. DAVIDSON, HENRIETTA J. DAVIDSON, which I wish appraised and deducted before any distribution is made. Item 4th. I wish an equal amount of all the rest of my property be set apart if so much there is and if all the rest does not amount to as much as the trust property, then I wish all to be set apart and distributed equally between MY WIFE SARAH, MY DAUGHTER SARAH BURTHA, and THE INFANT DAUGHTER UNNAMED in such a manner if possible they may all have share and share alike. Item 5th. If there should be a residue after making my wife and younger children equal with the three older ones, then I wish an equal division among them all of the residue. Item 6th. I do here appoint MY FRIEND WILLIAM A. DYER Executor to this my will and MY FRIEND JAMES H. FLYNT GUARDIAN for my three Oldest Children. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 9th day of September 1859. /s/ Paul Davidson Signed and published by Paul Davidson as his last will and in our presence as witnesses thereto by his request this 9th August 1859. William C. Wright John A. Durham Thomas J. Overton Georgia Taliaferro County Court of Ordinary September Term 1859. The last will and testament of Paul Davidson decd. was propounded in open Court for Probate by William A. Dyer the Executor in and by said will nominated William C. Wright & Thomas J. Overton two of the subscribing witnesses to said will being duly sworn, say that they saw Paul Davidson sign and declare the foregoing to be and contain his last will and testament, that he did it freely and without compulsion, that he was of sound mind and memory, that they signed the same in his presence at his request and that John A. Durham signed the same as a witness in the presence of the testator and in their presence. /s/ Wm. C. Wright T. J. Overton Sworn to and subscribed in open Court September 5, 1859 The will and probate Ordered to be recorded /s/ Quinea ONeal Ordinary Recorded Sept. 5th, 1859 /s/ Quinea ONeal Ordinary Additional Comments: The three oldest children mentioned above (Arthur C., Mary D. and Henrietta J. Davidson) were from Paul Davidsons first married to Drusilla A. Jackson. The trust property left to these three children was likely from the trust created by the marriage agreement between Paul Davidson and Drusilla Jackson in Burke Co., GA. Paul Davidson married second to Sarah Jane Dyer, daughter of Thomas and Nancy Dyer of Warren Co., GA, and by her had Sarah Burtha Davidson and Pauline Davidson, the infant daughter unnamed. (Many thanks to Helen Bates for providing the names of Sarah Janes parents which led me to the discovery of the Dyer information below.) Dr. Davidson named his friend James H. Flynt as guardian to the three oldest children. James H. Flynt was brother-in-law of Sarah Jane (Dyer) Davidson, having married her sister, Elizabeth Dyer. (Note: James H. Flynt was uncle of America (Flynt) Taylor, first wife of my gr. granduncle, John Seaborn Taylor. America and John S. Taylor named a son Doctor Paul Davidson Taylor.) It appears that William A. Dyer, Executor of Dr. Davidsons will, was brother of Sarah Jane (Dyer) Davidson."
