    1. Courthouse Records
    2. Jason Ferguson
    3. Well, it looks like it was a good idea that was ahead of its time... I'm still wanting to get ahold of useful records for the site, but still need a good (and inexpensive!) way to get my hands on them, whether I have to transcribe or not. (I'm about 25% done with the 1860 census, for example). Unfortunately, I can't just go down to the courthouse since I live in Illinois... Thanks for everyone's responses! Jason

    1. Question Re: Taliaferro County Courthouse Records
    2. Jason Ferguson
    3. I have a question for anyone who has visited the courthouse in Crawfordville. It's an odd one, but bear with me... Was there available a computerized search for records (marriage, land, probate, etc)? Or, barring that, anything that looked like a computerized printout of the same? It's a long shot (considering how small the county is), but Im wondering if the county ever computerized any of these records, and, if so, would they be available under any sort of Open Records/Freedom of Information laws for the state. She was in her 18th year, lovely and fair and the pride of all whose pleasure it was to know her. She graduated at the Female College, a LaGrange, with the highest honor, and was at the time a favorite of her teachers and classmates. If her home circle she was much admired by all good people for her Christian grace, which adorned her youth and beauty. She visited Dr. Eve, of Augusta, about one year ago, and very soon after her return to her home her health began gradually to decline. She was conscious of the fact. At no time was she ever known to complain of any pain. She always expressed a cheerful resignation and ready obedience to the will of God. She yielded reluctantly to the solicitude of her doting parents and was carried to Florida, about the 15th January, since which time her health gradually declined and on the night of the 2nd instant, without a struggle her spirit passed away in calm repose. "When I left you with a kiss we united, Though my sympathy and prayer for your health was concealed, With fear and apprehension excited, Hope for improvement yet unrevealed. Happy is thy spirit with those of the blest, Though thy lovely form is consigned to dust, Sweet Minnie, thy spirit is at rest, And safe in the arms of Him you trust." Stella Holden Augusta, Ga., March 13th, 1884 Additional Comments: Another obtituary found gives Minnie Lee Rhodes' birthdate = July 2nd, 1865. She was charitable, generous and forgiving and possessed the impulses that make a true Christian. John D. Rhodes, son of John Rhodes, Esq. of Taliaferro County, Ga. was born on the 18th of March 1856 and died on the 16th of October 1878. From early youth he displayed a great amiability of disposition; and while quite young gave his attention to the subject of religion. On the 12th of August 1872 he was baptized by the Rev LRL Jennings into the fellowship of the Crawfordville Baptist Church. Shortly thereafter, he having professed a desire to labor in the work of the ministry, was encouraged by his brethren and authorized by his church, to exercise his gifts with a view of fitting himself for greater usefulness; it was his purpose to pursue a course of study in our Theological Seminary, but his failing health compelled him to forego. He labored, however, with all the zeal and earnestness that his increasing feebleness would permit, and though his life was short it was filled with good works. Having married Miss Sallie E. Pilcher, of Warren Co., he settled in the neighborhood of Elim, to which church he transferred his membership and preached for them one sabbath in each month, till too feeble to render the service. His suffering was long and sometimes severe, but he bore with that all that firm faith and patient resignation which deprives death of its terrors. His surviving widow and the little boy who God gave him, his parents and a large host of relatives, have abundant reasons furnished by his life and death to sorrow not as those who have no hope. "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord." Additional Comments: John D. Rhodes was the son of John Rhodes Jr. and Cornelia Mildred Gunn of Taliaferro County. John D. Rhodes and Sallie Pilcher had a son named James Pilcher Rhodes. He had lived an humble and useful member of the Baptist church for more than forty years. He was a fond father. It was his great concern to see his children do well; and he had the satisfaction of seeing them all settled around him, and members of the church. His hospitality was almost unlimited; and it afforded him much pleasure to have his numerous friends partake thereof and feel at home in his house. In his death, the community has lost a valuable and much respected citizen, the church one of the the oldest and most useful members, and his family a venerated and much-loved husband and father. But their loss is his eternal gain. During the last year of his life he suffered much, but bore it with patience and resignation. He has ceased to suffer, and entered into rest. He lived in the fear and service of God, and died in hope of eternal life. "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth; yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors; and their works do follow them." Additional Comments: According to Crawfordville Baptist Church records located in the GA State Archives, John Rhodes Sr. joined the church July 26, 1823 and died in January 1867. He was married to Nancy McGinty in Wilkes County in 1818. The statue of Alexander H. Stephens, the commoner was unveiled in the Shadow of Liberty Hall on May 24, 1893 as stated in the People's Advocate. (Later known as the Advocate Democrat later this same year on October 6, 1893.) Hon. Horace Holden of Crawfordville, presided as master of ceremonies, and opened the exercises by introducing Rev. R. E. L. Harris, who offered a fervent and beautiful prayer. Miss Mary Corry, daughter of Alexander H. Stephens' niece Mary Matilda Stephens, stepped to the front and pulled the string attached to the head of the statue. Miss Mary Corry married the Hon. Horace Moore Holden a few days later on June 01, 1893. Judge Holden was the son of William Franklin Holden and born March 5, 1866. Mary Corry Holden was the daughter of Judge William Corry and Mary Matilda Stephens, charter member of the original Alexander H. Stephens Chapter of the United Daughter of the Confederacy and served as first hostess along with Mrs. Lula Gunn to Liberty Hall when it first opened Mrs. Lula Gunn Moore, daughter of William Robert Gunn and Emily Emma Dickson was born June 06, 1867. She married the late Clem G. Moore of Crawfordville, served as hostess at Liberty Hall when it first opened, several months prior to the first paid hostess. On February 28, 1896 the Advocate -Democrat issued by Clem G. Moore became the official county Organ. The UDC All American Cookbook published in 1954 was dedicated to Mrs. Lula Gunn Moore's memory as she served as UDC Chapter President for many years. She was one of the charter members of the original chapter in 1899. At this time the office of the Alexander Stephens was held in the library of the Alexander H. Stephens Home. Almorette Elizabeth Gunn was the first paid hostess at Liberty Hall. In her later years she married Red Lunceford. Red Lunceford and John Larkin Sisson ran a barber shop inside the Crawfordville Hotel. John and Red opened a shop next door to the Movie house after Mr. Lyle closed his business. This was when Mr. Elton Sturdivant joined the group in 1934. John kept the accounting books for Mr. Lunceford for many years. After the fires of 1910 the Hotel was reerected. The new building would occupy the site of the old hotel. It contained two or three state rooms, hotel office, lobby and sample rooms on the ground floor with about 20 rooms in the upper story for guest use. Laura Lee Crawford joined Mrs. Lunceford. Laura Lee was the daughter of June Crawford. A short time later, Laura Lee was joined by Mrs. Mable Moore Bird as hostesses in the Alexander H. Stephens home. Miss Mable worked at The Crawfordville Supperette located in uptown Crawfordville in the afternoons. Those may remember Laura Lee's dad driving the school bus for the Alexander Stephens Institute. Laura Lee's ancestor was no other than the Honorable William Harris Crawford. He was U.S. Senator, Sec. of Treasury under Monroe and Candidate for President in 1824. The town of Crawfordville is named for him. Mable Bird was the daughter of Sheriff Robert Matthews Moore and Daisy Taylor. Her husband Bubba Bird, a lifelong resident of Crawfordville, had retired as an electrician/plummer (sic). They were members of the Crawfordville Methodist Church. He served in Civilian Conservation Corps at Brooklet Ga. and for a number of years worked at U.S. Navy Shipyard in Charleston, S.C. Wife of Dr. Eulous Portwood who was a dentist for many years in Crawfordville. He along with his wife Mattie Gee, daughter of store merchant Charles Gee allowed their daughter Mrs. Martha Portwood Nelms to donate a large wardrobe when she was the hostess of Liberty Hall in 1993. This wardrobe had been used by our Portwood and Edwards families. Martha married George C Nelms in 1936. George had taught at ASI and Union Point before going into the service during the World War 2. In 1947 he was the Owner of the Crawfordville Hardware and Furniture Co., purchased from E C Gunn who had owned and operated the business for over 40 years. George took over the job of County Superintendent upon the retirement of his father in law Eulous T. Portwood for the term 1957-1957. Evelyn Edwards became Historic Site Supervisor of Alexander Stephens park and her assistant, Martha Schuff were remembered giving programs on the history of our county, Taliaferro. Mrs. Martha Schuff later Mrs. W. Edwin Neal worked as Interpretive Park Ranger at the Alexander Stephens home at this time and had just recently retired. A very special thank you goes to Mrs. Neal for preserving the history of the ladies that once served under the house where Alexander Stephens spent his days. Martha's father was Mr. James William Atchison was a retired cotton ginner, a merchant and contractor. A lifelong resident of Taliaferro County, he was a member of the Crawfordville Baptist Church and a member of the Crawfordville Masonic Lodge. Alexander H. Stephens was a man of the highest personal character and moral worth. His conduct at all times, weather in public or private, was regulated by the high standards of duty which he had set up for his guidance. He not only did what he believed to be right, but he had the wisdom and the understanding to know what was right. Come visit Crawfordville, then visit with Mr. Phil Dew and Margie Edwards at Alexander H. Stephens Home and then walk over to the monument of Stephens shadowing Liberty Hall carrying these words from a speech made in my home town of Augusta, Georgia in 1855: "I am afraid of nothing on earth, or above the earth, or under the earth, except to do wrong--th path of duty I shall ever endeavor to travel, fearing no evil" and dreading no consequences." A very special thank you goes to Miss Josie Bird, my Aunt Margie Edwards and Phil Dew for helping me gather the spirt of Alexander H. Stephens on my last visit with my mom, Alice Edwards Kimbrel and the home of Alexander Stephens. I hope to find you among the shadows there on Labor Day. He was named for his father Wiley Cranston, and for his great grandfather, Edmond Wiley. He was also named for his Uncle Alvin Bruce Ogletree, and for the Rev. M.J. Bruce of Margaret's Grove Baptist Church. Wiley had one older brother Franklin, younger sister Barbara Merlene, next in line of siblings are Sandra Marie, Harvey Dean and Ora Nell. Franklin researched and published our family book entitled, The Lineage of Benjamin F. Jones and John Ogletree Sr., in 1979. In the year of 1970 Wiley became a caseworker and was hired in April with the staff of the Department of Family Services. In the fall of 1979, Wiley began discussing with Miss Josie Bird of Crawfordville the possibility of forming a historical Society for Taliaferro County. As a result of this discussion and a meeting with Mell Lunceford, Jr. and about a dozen other people met in the Taliaferro County jury room and decided to proceed with the organization. The constitution and by laws were adopted in Dec. Wiley was elected as first president, Mell Lunceford Jr. was Vice president, Mary Ramsey Darden was secretary, and Franklin Jones was elected treasurer. Discussions were begun with the railroad for acquisition of the railroad dept in Crawfordville for their headquarters. The result of the discussion was that the CSX Railroad leased the railroad depot to the city of Crawfordville with the Historical Society as occupant. A little clean up work took place but somehow the building never served as their headquarters. This building was later sold to a private resident residing in our beloved Taliaferro County. Wiley took time off from work and was an extra in four movies filmed in Crawfordville. These movies were: Home Fires Burning, Paris Trout, A Passion for Justice and Neon Bible. These recordings sparked an interest in preserving Taliaferro County History on film. During this time Wiley married Myra Ann Edwards and their children are Amanda and Clay. Also during this time Wiley researched and published a cemetery book entitled, "Rest in Peace," in October 1984. After being diagnosed with Hereditary Neuropathy with Liabilities to Pressure Palisis and later changed to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Wiley retired from the state in June of 1996. At this time Wiley began gathering all his recordings he had made in the County and donated much of it to the Taliaferro County Historical Society. Before publishing his auto-biography, "I Remember...", July 2003. Sadly a few weeks after his family reunion in 2004, Wiley passed away in his sleep on September 16, 2004. Burial took place in the Robinson Baptist Church Cemetery. Survivors include his mother, Dorothy Leona Ogletree Jones, Robinson Community; his wife, Myra Ann Edwards Jones; a daughter, Amanda Scott, Wake Forest, N.C.; a son, Clay Jones, Atlanta; three sisters, Barbara Merlene Browning, Robinson Community, Nell J. Smith, Bowden, and Sandra Marie Meloon, Orlando, Fla.; and two brothers, Franklin Thomas Jones, Thomson, and Harvey Deen Jones, Alpharetta. Come and enjoy some of Wiley's work when stepping through the halls of the Taliaferro County Historical society. Until my next adventure Terri Saturday Additional Comments: Much of the Biography was taken from the pages of Wiley's book "I Remember..." published in 2003. Many of his videos will be transfered from Video to DVD. Stop by the Historical Society in Crawfordville any Sunday and pick up a copy of one today. 3. I've been doing some "cleanup" work on the website ( http://www.rootsweb.com/~gatalia2/), trying to clean up the directories and images in advance of some larger changes I'm planning to do in about a month or so. If anyone finds any broken links or images, can you shoot me a message so I can get them fixed? Jason
